Deux pistons 34 et 35 travaillant en opposition sont placés dans la chapelle 32 de la valve et peuvent y coulisser. Les ressorts 36 et 37 n'ont pas la même force et ils agissent de facon à rapprocher les deux pistons l'un vers l'autre. Une pointe 38 prolonge le piston 34 et vient en contact avec la face adjacente du piston 35;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

IMPROVEMENTS TO BYPASS DEVICES FOR FILTERS.
The present invention relates to bypass devices for filters.
In automotive filter devices, it is common practice to place the filter between the oil pump and the bearings to filter impurities from the lubricant before it reaches the bearings. When the device operates under determined pressures, the required lubricant flow passes easily from the filter to the bearings. However, when for some reason the oil pressure decreases, the flow of lubricant through the filter may become insufficient to ensure proper lubrication of the bearings, which can then damage or melt the anti-friction of the bearings.
The main characteristics and objects of the present invention are constituted by novel bypass devices operating automatically, so as to effectively allow the passage of the lubricant in bypass; in this way, the oil around the filter passes directly to the bearings, each time the pressure of the device falls below a determined value and the lubricant thus reaches the bearings in a suitable quantity.
Further objects and features of the present invention are novel valve devices easily adapting to existing filters, in order to achieve the desired bypass effect.
In addition, the objects and features of the present invention are the realization of new valve devices capable of being manufactured and fitted easily and at low cost, free from operational problems, capable of ensuring long use and of easy use. at various pressure conditions.
The following specifications and the accompanying drawing will highlight other objects and characteristics of the present invention:

Figure 7 is a cross section taken along 7-7 of Figure 5, and shown in the direction of the arrows.
Referring first to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, 10 shows an engine block comprising an orifice communicating with an intake channel 11 connected to the oil pump P. (Figure 2), and also comprising an orifice communicating with an outlet pipe 12 connected to supply channels (not shown) of lubricant, intended to supply the bearings.
A base 13 is fixed to the engine block by any suitable device, for example by bolts (not shown) housed in suitable holes H made in the base. This base 13 comprises an intake recess 14, which, when the base 13 is mounted on the engine block-10, coincides with the orifice of the pipe 11 of the pump in the engine block 10; the base has a second recess 15 which coincides with the outlet or pipe 12 for supplying oil to the bearings of the engine block 10.
The upper face of the base 13 comprises a recess limited by a circular edge 16. A boss 17 placed in the center of the recess rises from the upper face of the base 13, and it comprises a threaded bore 18 in which is screwed a threaded tube 19 of short length. This tube 19 laterally comprises several orifices 19a made in its side wall, and it is threaded at 20 to receive a bolt 21, the role of which will be described below. A channel 22 formed in the base 13 provides communication between the bore 18 and the recess 15 formed in the underside of the base 13; this channel coincides with the outlet or pipe 12 leading to the bearings, in the engine block 10.
A channel 25 formed in the base 13 is in communication with the recess 14 which coincides with the inlet port 11 of the pump. The channel 25 is also in communication with a bore 26 which receives a valve in the aforementioned base. This bore 26 comprises a valve seat 27; against the seat 27, a piston-type check valve is applied by the action of a spring 29 which is held compressed by a perforated cup 30 at the upper end of the bore 26. The action of the spring 29 is adjusted so that the valve 28 does not rest on its seat for pressures, for example between 35 grams and 70 grams per square centimeter of the lubricant delivered by the pump through the pipes 11 and 25 to the bore 26 of the valve under the underside of the piston-valve 28.
The part of the bore 26 above the seat 27 of the valve communicates via a channel 51 in the base 13 with a valve chapel 32 in the aforementioned base 13 and also with a distribution chamber 33 in this base 13 .
Two pistons 34 and 35 working in opposition are placed in the chapel 32 of the valve and can slide there. The springs 36 and 37 do not have the same force and they act to bring the two pistons closer to each other. A point 38 extends the piston 34 and comes into contact with the adjacent face of the piston 35;
the relative forces of the springs 36 and 37 are calculated so that when the pressure of the oil delivered by the pump into the chapel 32 through the channel 31 falls below the value of the oil pressure determined for example about lkg 400 per centi-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
square meter, the piston-valve 35 normally resting on its seat separates from the valve seat 39, a seat located inside the chapel 32, which reveals the bypass orifice 40 from said chapel and allows the direct passage of the lubricant through the channel 41 to the recess 15 and from there through the pipe 12 from the engine block to the bearings. When the pressure in the chapel 32 is about 1 kg. 400 per cm 2 or more, the piston-valve 35 rests on its seat 39 by closing the bypass orifice 40.
The chapel 32 has a vent 43 behind the piston 34 to allow it to move under the action of the spring 36 without blocking.
A filter 44, which in the embodiment shown is made of accordion pleated paper of the tubular filter element type, but which may be of any desirable type, is mounted on the bog 17 of the. base 13; a cover in the form of an inverted cup or bell 45 is mounted on said base 13 at a distance from the filter 44, to enclose. The bell 45 has an annular rim or lip which rests on the upper part of a seal 46 carried by the upper face of the base 13. The bolt 21 serves to hold the bell firmly on the base. aforementioned base, but also to allow it to be detached.
A spring
47 surrounding the bolt 21 inside the bell is used to press the filter
44 against the base 13 around the boss 17.
Under the effect of the pressure supplied by the pump P, a normal flow of lubricant is sent through the pipe 11 of the engine block into the drain 14 of the base 13, and from there through the channel 25 into the bore 26 of the check valve, while if the value of the pressure is significantly greater than 35 grams per cm2 the lubricant flow passes beyond the check valve 28 which is open and its seat 27 to enter the channels 31 and 33 as well as in chapel 32. If the oil pressure in chapel 32 has a value in this example of 1 kg 400 per cm2 or more ;, the valve piston 35 rests on its seat 39, thereby closing the bypass outlet 40.
As a result, the lubricant passes from channel 31 into channel 33 and rises in bell 45 to pass through filter 44 and pass through orifices 19a made in tube 19 in bore 17, then in channel 22, l 'recess 15 and pipe 12 of the engine block supplying the bearings.
However if the pressure, supplied by the pump P, of the lubricant entering the chapel 32, falls substantially below lkg 400 per cm2, the action of the spring 36 of the piston 34 overcomes the resistance opposed to it by the spring 37 of the valve piston 35 acting in opposition and, by the action of the tip 38, it forces the valve 35 to separate from its seat 39, which thereby uncovers the bypass channel 40, and allows the flow of lubricant to pass, to the chapel 32 through the bypass orifice 40 in the channel 41 and the recess 15 and then in the pipe 12 of the engine block supplying the bearings,
which bypasses the filter 44. When the pressure is restored in the chapel 32 to a value substantially equal to 1 kg 400 per cm2, the flow of lubricant through the filter 44, as has been described above, is reestablished by the return of the valve 35 to its seat 39 and the resulting closure in bypass channel 40. The springs 36 and 37 can be adjusted so that the bypass operation can occur as a function of other determined pressures.
In the variant embodiment shown in Figures 5 to 7, the operation is substantially the same, the main differences consisting in a modification of the arrangement of the channels in the base.
In this variant, it can be seen that 10a represents an engine block comprising on the one hand an orifice for communication with an inlet pipe 11a in relation to the oil pump P (FIG. 2) of the engine and on the other hand an orifice communication with an outlet pipe 12a in relation to the supply channels (not shown) supplying the pads, not shown).
The base 13a is fixed on the engine block 10a in the same way as on the base 13, for example by means of bolts (not shown) housed in the holes Ha made in the aforementioned base. The base 13a comprises an intake recess 14a which, when the base is mounted on the

In this case, the action of the spring 29a is adjusted so as to allow the valve to separate from its seat for pressures of about 35 to 70 grams per square centimeter for the lubricant delivered by the pump P, on the underside of said valve 28a, after passage of the lubricant

Above the annular valve seat 27a the bore 26a communicates by a channel 31a, formed in the base 13a, with a chapel z. valve formed in said base 13a and also with a distribution chamber 33a formed in the aforementioned base 13a

Two piston-valves 34a and 35a working in opposition are placed so as to be able to slide in the valve chapel 32a. The springs 36a and 37a have different forces and they act in such a way as to bring the two piston-valves closer to each other. A point 38a extends the piston 34a and comes into contact with the adjacent face of the piston

The relative forces of the springs 36a and 37ā are calculated in such a way that, when the pressure of the lubricant delivered into the chapel 32a through the channel 31a falls below a determined value, for example 1 kg 400 per cm2 the piston 'Valve 35a leaves its seat 39a inside the chapel 32a, which has the effect of discovering an outlet orifice

A filter 44a of the same type as the filter 44 is supported by part of the boss 17a on the base 13a around the tube 20a, and a cover made of

The upper face of the base ï3¯a comprises an annular recess for distributing lubricant comm = lquant with the chamber 33a.
The normal flow of lubricant under the effect of the pressure of the pump P passes through the pipe 11a made in the engine block, in the recess 14a of the base 13a and from there, if the pressure in this case has a value substantially greater than 35 to 70 grams per cm 2, this lubricant flow opens the check valve 28a by separating it from its seat 27a and flows into the channel 31a, the chapel 32a and the chamber 33a. If the lubricant pressure has a value of about 1 kg 400 or more, per cm2 in the chapel

32a the piston-valve 35a resting normally on its seat remains applied on the seat 39a and the bypass orifice 40a is closed.
As a result, the lubricant flow passes from channel 31a into chamber 33a and delivery recess 48a, and then rises into bell 45a. From there, lubricant passes through filter 44a and through tube 20a 1 '. bore 18a and channel 22a made in the base 13a, it passes into the recess 15a, and from there through the pipe 12a of the engine block 10a it reaches the bearings.
If the pressure of the lubricant entering the chapel 32a falls substantially below 1 kg 400 per cm2, the action of the spring 36a of the piston 34a overcomes the resistance of the spring 3la acting (in opposition) of the piston-valve 35a by the action of the tip 38a and forces the valve 35a to leave its seat 39a; this action uncovers the bypass orifice 40a and allows the bypass lubricant to pass from the chapel 32a through the channel 41a directly into the recess
15a and from there through the line 12a of the engine block 10a into the bearings thereby bypassing the filter 44a.
When the pressure in the chapel
32a is restored to an approximate value of 1.400 kg per cm2, the flow of lubricant through the filter 44a is restored as described above, by the return to its seat of the valve 35a and the closing of the valve. the resulting bypass port 40a. The springs 36a and 37a can be adjusted so as to perform the bypass operation with other determined pressures.
It can be seen that the devices described in each embodiment comprise two piston-valves urged in opposite directions in a housing, and whose positions depend on a pressure difference resulting from the different forces of the springs which urge them and from the pressure of the lubricant. between them in the housing within which these piston-valves operate, so that a bypass for the lubricant around the filter is ensured whenever the pressure of the lubricant delivered by the pump falls below a predetermined value ,
and wherein the bypass is removed whenever the lubricant pressure reaches or exceeds said predetermined value. The action of the piston-valves is fully automatic, which at all times ensures a supply of oil or suitable lubricant to the engine bearings. The efficiency of this operation can be ensured at any desired pressure by adjusting the valve pistons and their springs.
It is obvious that the preferred embodiments described above and shown in the appended drawing have been given only by way of indication and not by way of limitation, and that various modifications can be made to them without departing for this. of the spirit of the present invention.
