   Le dispositif consiste en une trémie ou conduit de section circulaire ou carrée, ou même elliptique, en béton ou autre matériau ignifuge ou ignifugé, placée verticalement ou suivant une pente inclinée et parallèlement à la façade des bâtiments, et communiquant avec ceux-ci par des conduits transversaux munis d'un clapet ou dune porte va-et-vient, permettant l'accès de 1?intérieur du bâtiment vers l'intérieur de la trémie.

   La paroi intérieure de celle-ci est tapissée, matelassée ou capitonnée, et pourvue d'une série de cercles en matière à la fois résistante et élastique, telle que les différentes espèces de caoutchouc naturel ou synthétique, ou même avec ressorts métalliques, raidisseurs, enrobés, ou tout autre conditionnement mécanique, de nature à freiner la chute des corps, sans empêcher leur passage ; ces bandes circulaires, ou rouleaux, ou diaphragmes, de matières élastiques, seront pleines ou en forme de languettes, et de largeurs variées, de façon à amortir la chute des corps de diamètres plus où-moins grands et de poids plus ou moins élevés (adultes, jeunes gens, enfants, etc.). 



  Le dessin en coupes horizontales en donne un exemple.   Son introduction dans la trémie'est signalée par un dispositif lumineux ou sonore commandé automatiquement par la porte d'accès à la trémie ou autrement. 



  Ce principe de descente peut s'appliquer dans l'industrie, pour la manutention de produits fabriqués ou non fabriqués.
