<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

ROTARY MECHANISM WITH STAR CYLINDERS FOR COMPRESSOR AND SIMILAR MOTORS
The rotary mechanism according to the invention comprises several chambers of variable volume consituated by cylinders arranged in a star and formed in a rotary cylinder block; the pistons of said cylinders are controlled by connecting rods articulated to another rotary element which rotates around a geometric axis parallel to that of the cylinder block but offset with respect to this axis, said block as well as the aforesaid rotary element being connected between them by connecting rods or cranks.
Distribution to the cylinders is effected from the center through a conical member capable of performing small axial displacements with respect to the seat formed in the center of the cylinder block, in order to ensure automatic adjustment of the seal along the surfaces. cooperating conical, while maintaining a substantially constant value the frictional moment applied to said conical member.
This automation is obtained using rollers and cooperating ramps, the first distributed on a fixed member and the second on the aforementioned conical member, so as to cause small axial displacements of this conical member as a function of the friction moment. which tends to rotate the conical member o In this conical member, intake and exhaust ports are provided along arcs, the opening of which is a function of that of the openings made in the cylinder block for the heads of the cylinders.
A mechanism such as the one in question can be used either as a compressor, pump, or other controlled machine, or as an endothermic or exothermic motor.
An exothermic motor can be produced with a mechanism according to the invention, the motor shaft of which is common to that of a compressor, advantageously constituted by another mechanism of the same type, these mechanisms being coupled together and of displacements suitably different from each other. , one of the mechanisms constituting the motor and the other

a compressor for a single fluid circulating in a circuit formed in which there are inserted a refrigerant and a heat source. Thus, a circulation of fluid coming from the heat source is established to actuate the engine and the same fluid leaving the exhaust of this engine is directed towards the refrigerant from which it is taken by the compressor which compresses it and returns it to the heat source, consisting essentially of a heat exchanger.
Heat transfer occurs between the hot source and the cold source (refrigerant), there is thus a degradation of heat, and a residual mechanical energy is obtained on the common shaft of the two mechanisms.
The following description, with reference to the accompanying drawings, shows schematically some embodiments of the intention, given as examples.
Fig. 1 shows a diagram of an exothermic machine which comprises two coupled mechanisms.
Figs. 2 and 3 show, respectively in axial section and in diametral section according to III-III FIG. 2, a star-shaped cylinder mechanism according to the invention, and particularly realizing a compressor.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 show, respectively in longitudinal section, in diametral section along V-V fig. 4 and in diametral section along VI-VI fig 4, a detail of the conical distribution member.
In figs. 2 to 6, the mechanism comprises a housing -1- in several parts, this housing being extended by a sleeve -2 -, - 2a- on one side and by a sleeve -3-3a- on the other side. The arrangement is such that the axis of the sleeve -2-2a- is parallel but offset relative to that of the sleeve -3-3à-.
The latter comprises concentric bearings intended to receive two bearings -4- and-5- in which is mounted a shaft-6-, on this shaft-6- is mounted a sealing device generally designated as-8 - and which is divided into two parts by a wheel-9- coaxial with the shaft -6- and advantageously forming part of a gear lubricating pump, the other wheel -10- of which is actuated by a toothed wheel- 11controlled by tree -6-. Cet.-shaft -6- carries at its extremtité mtérieur to the interior of the casing-1-1, a disc -12- provided with a cylindrical peripheral part -12a- located inside the same casing -1-.
In the sleeve -2- are provided two other concentric bearings for bearings -13-14- which are offset with respect to the axis of the shaft -6-. In these bearings -13-14- is mounted a hollow shaft -15- provided, at its end housed inside the housing -1-, with a flange on which is fixed the cylinder block -16- which is located also housed in the housing -1-. In this block -16- are drilled the cylinders -17, -, ..for example six in number, inside which slide pistons-18- in equal number; these pistons are provided with connecting rods-19- whose heads are mounted on axes-20- mounted in turn in the bearing surfaces provided in lugs -12b- projecting inside the cylindrical part-12a of the disc - 12- mounted on the shaft -6-.
In addition, in the disc-12- are pivotally mounted the journals -21- of connecting rods or cranks-22-, the other end of which is journalled by means of pins-23- in appropriate spans provided in the block -cylinders -16-. The center distance of the rods or cranks-22- is equal to the offset between the axis of the shaft-6- (around which the disc-12- turns) and the axis of the disc-15- (around which the cylinder block -16-).
The cylinder block-16- comprises in the center a cavity in which extends an integral member -24- which constitutes a frustoconical seat (see also fig. 4). Lights-25- open into this frustoconical seat which communicate with the heads of the cylinders -17-.
In this frustoconical seat formed by the member -24- is housed a conical member -26- which is made to slide on two parts -27a- and -28- of different diameter from a shaft -27- coaxial with the shaft - 15- and rigidly integral with the part -2a- mounted at the outer end of the sleeve'-2-. The different
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
this diameter between the parts -27a- and-28- creates inside the conical member-26- a chamber -29- in which a spring-30- is housed; the latter, by resting against the shoulder which separates the said parts -27a- and-28-, constantly urges the conical member-26- to the left with respect to figs. 2 and 4, that is to say towards its conical seat.
On the fixed shaft -28- is mounted a sleeve -31- whose axial position is adjustable, and which carries two rollers -32- whose axes are perpendicular to those of the shaft -28-. These rollers are placed opposite two V-shaped notches -33- formed at the end of the smaller end of the conical member -26-.
In an appropriate radial and axial position of this member-26- is provided a slot -34- which constitutes a passage connecting the conical surface (in line with the slots -25-) to the internal chamber -29-, aforementioned; this is connected, in turn, by means of bores -35-, to the internal cavity of the hollow and fixed shaft-27 -o In addition, in the conical surface of this member-26- is hollowed out a light -36- in an arc of a circle- (always facing the lights -25-) whose angular extent depends on the number of cylinders and the particular use for which the mechanism is intended '*. The light -36- communicates by means of several holes-37- with the tubular space-38- between the fixed shaft -27- and the central hollow shaft-15-, this space communicating with his turn with an exterior pipe-39-.
The mechanism comprises suitable lubrication circuits, means for recovering the lubricating fluid, lines for recovering fluid leaks in the crankcase -1-, etc.
The mechanism described above operates as follows, considering for example its use as a compressor. The fluid to be compressed is introduced through the pipe -39- and enters the tubular space -36-, from where it is sucked into the cylinders by the pistons which, when the assembly rotates according to the arrow fig. 3; move away radially from the cylinder block from the lower position to the upper position; this is obtained thanks to the offset between the axis of rotation of the block -16- and the axis of rotation of the disc-12- carrying the axes -20-.
During the downward stroke of the pistons (still looking at fig. 3) they, because of the aforementioned offset, compress the fluid in the corresponding cylinders to then push it back, through the port -34-, into the chamber -29 - then, through the holes -35-, in the interior cavity of the hollow shaft -27- which represents the delivery pipe. In this case, the shaft-6- constitutes the motor shaft and drives the block-16- via the connecting rods or cranks -22-.
When the mechanism operates as a motor, modifications are made to it with regard to the angular extent of the lumen -36-, the size of the lumen-34- and the arrangement of the distribution as a whole. In this case, the pressurized working fluid is directed, by the intermediary of the pipe formed by the hollow shaft -27-, into the cylinders through the port -34-, producing a more or less prolonged expansion according to the angular extent of this same light -34-, then it is evacuated through the light-36- and the pipe -39-; the rotation is opposite to the previous one.
The conical member -26-, biased by the spring-30-, automatically regulates the friction of the conical seat by its own sliding, which ensures constant sealing. Indeed, when the friction between the conical surfaces increases for some reason, the rotary block -16- tends to drive the conical member-26- in rotation around the fixed shaft -27-28- but in this case the fixed rollers-32-, due to the presence of the V-shaped ramps -33-, produce a slight displacement of the member-26- (to the right looking at figs 2 and 4) so as to loosen this member of the seat-24- until the friction returns to its pre-established value. The spring -30- and the effect due to the pressure of the fluids on the organ -26- must be suitably calculated in order to achieve the equilibrium condition required for this organ.
An application of the mechanism according to the invention is that
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
shown in fig l, Two mechanisms similar to those described above and designated M and C on the diagram, are coupled together using shafts corresponding to the shaft -6- of the example described above , interconnected.
Between these mechanisms and on the common shaft is mounted a dynamo -D- or other machine, electric or not, which exploits the mechanical energy of the common shaft between the -C- and -µµ- mechanisms, The -M mechanism - having a greater total cubic capacity, is intended to constitute the engine of the assembly and its supply is via a pipe -51- which connects it to a source of heated fluid, more particularly constituted by an exchanger of heat -S-. The exhaust of the motor mechanism -M takes place through a pipe -52- which ends in a refrigerant-R- where the fluid is cooled, and thus reduced in volume and possibly condensed.
On leaving the refrigerant -R- the fluid passes through the pipe -53- and reaches the mechanism -C- which operates as a compressor and pushes the fluid in the pipe -54- towards the heat exchanger.
The mechanical energy produced by the motor -M- is intended to partially actuate the assembly -M-C-, while the residual part can be exploited thanks to the machine -D-.
The application described above can also be considered when the temperature drop between -S- and-R- is relatively limited.
The same application can also be achieved by providing in the circuit a heat accumulator capable of storing the heat withdrawn from any course in order to restore it during the operation of the closed cycle exothermic engine in question. The heat source can also be constituted, for example, by the exhaust of a burner, a boiler, a furnace, a domestic fireplace or the like. The refrigerant can be constituted by a heat exchanger circulating water at room temperature or the like.
The fluid which acts in a closed circuit can be simply constituted by air, or by vapors of volatile gasolines at low temperature, such as ether, ammonia, carbon dioxide or any other '' substance. in gas phase or in liquid and gas phase In the latter case, however, the compressor -C- can be constituted either by a mechanism of the type described above, or by a simple gear pump or the like. It is also possible to provide a suitable device for initiating the rotation of the rotary assembly as soon as the pressure of the control fluid falls below a predetermined value, in order to overcome the initial resistances.
The mechanism can be used to achieve an endothermic cycle by introducing heat through a burner into the air or other compressed fluid discharged by a compressor into the engine and then exhausted to the outside.
The accompanying drawings show schematically embodiments, but the shapes and arrangements of the members shown can be modified without, however, departing from the scope of the intention.
