On -

PROCESS FOR PREPARING A PERFECTED "VISCOSE" FOR THE PRODUCTION OF
RAYON FIBERS.
In the main patent application, the Applicant has described a process for preparing an improved "Viscose" for the production of rayon fibers, "Viscose" having a normal content of alkali and cellulose, of which
<EMI ID = 1.1>
of 16-26% caustic soda and having a cellulose content of 20% or less, first without adding water of dissolution or lye, and then transforming it, for a time interval of 40 to 90 minutes after the start of the sulfurization, in a "Viscose" free of fibers and well filterable, by the addition of the quantity of dissolving lye and dissolving water necessary to dissolve the xanthogenate. In this process, one also used for the sulphurization of the alkali-cellulose obtained without expression of the excess alkalizing lye.
In the above-mentioned procedure, sulfurization is carried out in the usual manner within a temperature range from 20 [deg.] To

that in most cases it is necessary to cool the alkali-cellulose before sulphurization. In addition, it is necessary in each case to also cool the "Viscose" obtained after sulfurization in order to prevent too rapid subsequent ripening.
The Applicant has discovered that it is also possible to obtain well-filterable "viscoses" by carrying out the sulfurization, according to the de-

This method is particularly advantageous when subjecting a highly polymerized cellulosic material to alkalization and sulfurization. Heretofore, it has been necessary in such a case in order to proceed with the depolymerization of the cellulosic material, to bring this material to 35 [deg.] Or more in the defibrated and alkalized state depending on whether a medium is used. agent accelerating the pre-ripening and such as, for example, sodium sulphide or sodium persulphate, or that depolymerization was caused only by means of heat. Cooling prior to sulphurization of the heated alkali cellulose required a great deal of energy and wasted considerable time. This process also required, in order to obtain a well-filterable "Viscose", the continuation of the alkaline

On the other hand, the new process in accordance with the invention makes it possible, even when the alkalization and depolymerization are first carried out with hot lye, with or without the addition of products which accelerate the depolymerization, to obtain "viscoses. "fiber-free and filtering well, while considerably reducing preparation time.
In this process, the duration of the dry sulfurization is generally 10 to 40 minutes, depending on the sulfurization temperature that is used. We -

For the implementation of the process, one can use any usual equipment such as mixers or churns, although it is advantageous to use a lying agitation device, the agitator arms of which are very close to the walls, since in an apparatus of this kind it is possible to use the cellulosic material in coarse form resulting from the defibration operation.
The examples given below without limitation illustrate the implementation of the process. In these examples, the amount of cellulosic material indicated relates to the air-dried state, i.e. to a water content of about 8%, the amounts of alpha-cellulose relating to usually absolutely dry cellulosic material.
