La fig. 1 est une vue fragmentaire en coupe axiale d'un accou- plement de tuyaux en béton au moyen d'un joint selon l'invention;
La fig. 2 est une vue similaire .montrant une variante d'exé- cution du joint;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

SEALING FOR PIPES.
The invention relates to a gasket made of rubber or other suitable plastic or elastic material, for producing the watertight connection of pipes made of concrete, metal, asbestos-cement or other material, especially concrete pipes provided with a clamping hoop. in transverse prestressing, in particular for the execution of conduits intended to convey fluids under pressure, for example water conduits.
Concrete pipes wrapped by a tensioned transverse reinforcement have the disadvantage that the pressurized liquid coming into contact with the end face of the pipes infiltrates between the body of the pipe and the outer layer of concrete. coating of the hoop reinforcement, which can lead to rupture of the pipe. To obviate this drawback, the end to which the seal is applied has already been formed, either from a metal part suitable for the pipe, or from a thicker, non-shrunken part of the body of the pipe, extending beyond the aforesaid exterior coating.
The present invention provides a simpler solution to this problem, eliminating these artifices and complications. It consists essentially of providing the tight connection of pipes by means of a rubber ring seal or the like which is arranged in a housing provided at the inner wall of the contiguous ends of the pipes to be joined, which each carry a part of this housing, This housing is preferably formed by recesses in the inner wall of the pipes., in such a way, that the inner wall of the gasket is substantially aligned with the inner wall of the.
pipes, in order to avoid disturbances in the flow of fluids conveyed by the pipes,
The seal according to the invention therefore takes advantage of the pressure of the fluid in the pipe to press the seal on its bearing surface in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
inner wall of the pipe.
Other features and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description of some exemplary embodiments, which will be given below with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view in axial section of a coupling of concrete pipes by means of a joint according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing an alternative embodiment of the seal;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of a coupling of metal pipes, and
Figs, 4 to 7 are cross-sectional views of four alternative embodiments of the seal according to the invention.
In fig. 1, the contiguous ends of two prestressed reinforced concrete pipes 1, 2, of usual construction, have recesses 3, 4 in their inner wall, forming a housing for the seal 5 constituted by a cylindrical ring of rubber or other material appropriate.
The pipes are surrounded by a metal sleeve 6 ensuring the alignment of the pipes and may present interior projections? entering the space between the pipes and holding said sleeve in position.
This sleeve can obviously be replaced by a concrete sleeve, advantageously prestressed. For simplicity of the drawing, it has been omitted in figs.
2 and 3.
In pipes of sufficient internal diameter to allow entry of a man, the seal will be easily replaced at any time after the line has dried up.
In the example shown in fig. 2, the annular seal 5 ends with two lips 8 gradually tapering towards the outside and pressing against the bearing face of the housing 3, 4 so as to form a very good autoclave seal. Advantageously, the seal will be established in such a way that in the state of rest, that is to say hard before the introduction into the pipe, the lips 8 open outwards, so that as soon as the in place in the pipe they are applied with a certain initial pressure to convere the seat of the seal.
Fig 3 shows an assembly of metal pipes 9, 10, provided with widened ends 11, 12 forming the housing for the seal 5.
The parts 11, 12 can be formed integrally with the pipes or be fixed to them by welding. @
According to the invention, the joint 5 is advantageously provided with annular reinforcement means ensuring that even a joint of large diameter 'in relation to its thickness will remain perfectly nested in its housing and will be applied firmly against the bearing face of the latter. . Preferably, these reinforcing means are flexible in the radial direction to allow the joint to be easily released from the inside and to deform the new joint so as to be able to easily transform it from the inside of the pipe with a view to its assembly.
In figs. 1 3, these reinforcing means are constituted by two inner rings 13, 14 arranged towards the ends, and an outer ring 15 disposed in the middle part, opposite the space between the pipes. These rings may, for example, be made of plastic or spring steel, preferably coated with plastic or asphalt.
The reinforcement means are such that the seal 5 retains good elasticity in the radial direction. Figs. 4-7 show some exemplary embodiments in which the reinforcement means are embedded in the mass of the seal, instead of being placed on the surface of the latter like the rings 13, 14, 15. In these examples , the reinforcement is formed by a continuous ring 16 (fig. 4) stopping at a sufficient distance from the ends @
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the gasket to keep a perfect elasticity of these ends, or of spaced rings with a rectangular section ari in fixed or circular (18 in fig. 6) distributed over the length of the gasket.
It is also possible to use a wire or tape wound, in a large pitch helix, so that the section of the seal would be represented in the same way as in figs. 5 and 6. It is also possible, as shown in fig. 7, to use helical spring ends or groups of annular rings 19, 20, 21 placed near the two cylindrical faces of the seal 5.
It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the examples described and illustrated, to which various modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
