PROCEDE EN VUE DE L'INTRODUCTION DE MAGNESIUM DANS LES BAINS DE
FONTE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

PROCEDURE FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF MAGNESIUM INTO THE BATHS OF
MELTING.
. In order to combine magnesium with cast iron baths with a view to obtaining graphite solidified in spheroidal form in the cast iron part, hitherto mainly magnesium alloys have been used, that is to say materials of a metallic character. , preferably a nickel alloy containing 15% magnesium. When metal alloys based on magnesium, mainly with a high magnesium content, are used, the presence of flame and strong luminosity are troublesome or even dangerous, and are also the cause of losses. in magnesium. Finally, the melting of magnesium alloys requires special processes in order to avoid loss of magnesium on ignition.
An attempt has also been made to introduce magnesium in gaseous form or in the form of magnesium-based combinations at low vapor pressure (The Iron Age of 1.2.1951, p. 11), without our knowing however, these tests have given good results in the formation of a spheroidal graphitic structure. It has further been proposed to introduce magnesium by electrolysis directly into the cast iron bath from a salt bath.
It has also been proposed to add magnesium in the form of magnesium nitride, chloride or fluoride, either separately or together, with one or more reducing agents, or also without mixing them.
It has now been found that the introduction of magnesium in the form of nitride into a cast iron bath containing silicon is particularly favorable when employing a magnesium nitride obtained by incomplete nitriding of magnesium. The decomposing action, due to the introduction of magnesium into the casting, is favored by the use of a nitride of this kind, so that a particularly efficient transformation of the graphite is obtained under spheroidal shape.
Amounts of 0.01% magnesium in the cast iron are sufficient
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
already feels to obtain more than 70% of the graphite in spheroidal form, whereas the introduction of magnesiom in the form of an alloy for example only made it possible to obtain the same result with quantities of 0.04 to 0.06% of magnesium in the cast iron.
It has been found that, when using magnesium niture, the spheroids are most often in a smaller size than when adding magnesium as an alloy. It is assumed that it is to the combined nitrogen in the form of nitride that the different result is to be attributed with respect to the size of the spheroids and the minimum effective content of magnesium. The mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, hardness and elongation, are in no way inferior to those of castings produced using magnesium alloys.
This introduction of the combination of magnesium into the melt may take place by simple admission to the surface of the base melt, by mixing therewith or by pouring the combination of magnesium. The most advantageous is the use of a magnesium nitride, which still contains some 3 to 20% un-nitrided magnesium.
EXAMPLE: 1,000 parts of a cast iron for analysis below: 4.42% carbon 0.07% silicon 0.35% manganese 0.012% sulfur 0.012% titanium 0.020% phosphorus 0.068% chromium
0.06% arsenic 0.065% copper was alloyed with 26 parts ferro-silicon (76% silicon); 6.6 parts of magnesium nitride were then added to the bath at a temperature of about 1450, and the reaction was allowed to proceed. After injection by means of 10 parts of ferro-silicon, the casting was carried out.
The cast iron then contained 95% of the graphite in spheroidal form and 0.025% of magnesium.
If, on the other hand, the magnesium is introduced starting from a magnesium-nickel alloy with 15% magnesium, 0.03 to 0.04 of magnesium must remain in the cast iron to obtain a proportion of 70% of graphite in spheoidal form, If 90 to 95% of the graphite must be transformed into spheroids, then a quantity of this alloy must be used such that 0.04 to 0.08% of the cast iron remains. magnesium. It is by spectral analysis that the quantities of magnesium in the piece of fonteo are determined.
1.- Process for the introduction of magnesium into the cast iron baths in order to obtain a graphite cast iron completely or partially solidified in spheroidal form, characterized in that the magnesium is added to the cast iron bath in the form of nitride of magnesium, obtained by incomplete nitriding of magnesium.
