<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

FILLING FOR HEAT RECOVERY.
The invention relates to a filling for a heat recuperator consisting of one or more elements in the form of discs provided with channels of regular shape, connected in parallel for the fluid passing through said filling, discoidal elements which are constituted by a wound strip provided grooves perpendicular to the strip., the fluid channels being formed by the spaces between the grooves. Such a recuperator filling is known and the purpose of the grooves is to keep the material of the strip which forms one of the walls of a channel at equal distances from the material of the strip which forms the other wall of this. canalo In this known recuperator filling, the grooves can extend over the entire width of the strip.
In this form of construction, quite abrupt variations in section occur between the enclosures placed on each side of the recuperator, on the one hand, and the channels formed in the filling, on the other hand.
The Applicant has found that it is desirable to avoid these sudden variations. To this end, the recuperator filling according to the invention has the particular feature that the height of the grooves decreases at their ends, and even becomes zero, so as to form common supply and discharge spaces. for a number of channels connected in parallel.
Preferably, these supply and discharge enclosures are large enough and for this purpose, in an advantageous embodiment of the invention, there is between the end of each groove and the edge of the strip of material. , a mostly flat part.
The strip of material can be wound up in several ways.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Thus it is possible to wind a strip provided with grooves at the same time as a strip without grooves. In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the web is wound without an intermediate layer. For this purpose, it is desirable that the distance between the grooves be large enough with respect to the width of the latter.
The recoveries can be used for various applications, among others as heat recovery in a hot gas piston machine. By hot gas piston machine is meant a hot gas engine, a refrigerating machine operating on the reverse principle to that of the hot gas engine, or a heat pump.
The Applicant has found that when using the recuperator according to the invention in a hot gas piston machine, it is desirable that the width of the strip be at least 0.40 mm. In the case of narrower belts, the use of such recuperators will no longer be economical.
When using the filling in a hot gas piston machine, it is desirable that the passage for the fluid passing through the filling is not too small relative to the volume occupied by the filling material itself. The Applicant has found that an exact distribution of the volume available for the fluid and of the volume occupied by the material can be obtained when, according to another embodiment of the invention, the height of the grooves is at least. equal to the thickness of the material, this height being at most equal to 10 times said thickness.
The Applicant has further observed that, for thermodynamic reasons, it is desirable that, according to another embodiment of the invention, the thickness of the strip is at most 0.2 mm. . and preferably less than 0.04 mm.
Filling can. be made of various materials, for example plastic or paper. Both of these embodiments can be used in refrigeration machines and heat pumps. However, according to another embodiment of the invention, preferably, for the filling, metal is used, which moreover deserves the justified preference for thermodynamic reasons.
In order to avoid that during the winding of the bands, without interposition of an intermediate layer, the grooves do not fit into one another, various arrangements can be made. Thus, the grooves can be oblique with respect to the direction of the strip.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the spacings between the splines are unequal, which significantly reduces the possibility of interlocking a fairly large number of splines one within the other.
The Applicant has observed that a recuperator in accordance with the invention, consisting of metal strips, can be produced very simply. According to the invention, the metal strip passes between two rolling mill rolls, one of which is smooth and the other of which has grooves perpendicular to the direction of passage of the metal, after which the deformed strip is wound up.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing making, - of course, part .of.the.said invention.

Fig. 2 shows, on another scale, a plan view of a strip.

Figo 5 shows a coiled recuperator according to the invention.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a strip in which the spacing of the grooves is uneven.
Fig. 1 schematically represents a device which makes it possible to groove the strip. This device is constituted by two cylinders 1 and 2. The cylinder 1 has a smooth surface;, while the cylinder 2 comprises -des grooves'3 perpendicular to the axis of this cylinder. These grooves have sharp edges.
Between the rolls is fed a metal strip 5, the width of which is preferably at least three times the thickness, for example a strip 0.03 mm thick and 2 mm wide. It suffices to pass this strip between the cylinders to provide it with grooves 6.
It has been found that the depth of the splines can be increased by increasing the clamping between rolls 1 and 2. The splines 6 do not extend. not to the edge of the web although, on cylinder 2, grooves 3. are longer than the width of the strip
Figo 2 represents, on a larger scale, 'the strip 5. This is provided with grooves 6 and between the end of the grooves and the edge of the material remains a smooth part 7 as also shown in figo 3 which is a section following the plane III-III of fig 2.
Fig. 4 shows that, in this embodiment of the invention, the height 8 of each groove is equal to three times the thickness 9 of the strip.
Fig. 5 shows a recuperator wound in rings as used in a hot gas piston machine. As a result of the presence of the grooves 6, a certain distance remains between the various layers of the strip, which forms channels for the passage of the fluid through the recuperator.
The strip shown in FIG. 6 has grooves arranged so that the spacing 11 differs from the spacings 12 and 13. When such a strip is wound without interposing an intermediate layer, the possibility that during winding two grooves fall out one in the other will be less than in the case of equidistant grooves; this coincidence of the grooves would locally reduce the channel formed between two parts of the strip. These unequal spacings on the strip can be obtained, for example, by providing the cylinder 2 of the fige1 with unevenly spaced grooves.
