<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENTS TO BOILERS.
This invention relates to boilers and its object is to provide a boiler which is of simple construction, capable of being produced in series and in which water can be used containing relatively large proportions of sludge or the like. deposits. Furthermore, although the invention is applicable to boilers using gaseous or liquid fuels, it tends towards a construction particularly suitable for use with a wide variety of solid fuels ranging from coke or coal to straw or the like. vegetable waste.
Further, although the invention relates more particularly to steam boilers, it can in certain cases be applied to boilers intended primarily for heating water rather than for producing steam. For convenience, however, it will be assumed to be applied to a steam boiler.
A boiler according to the present invention comprises a water or water and steam chamber formed by a cylindrical body comprising a circumferential wall provided with a series of outer circumferential fins or ribs and bottoms fixed to the ends of the body. cylindrical to complete the water or water and steam chamber.
In a preferred arrangement, a cylindrical body constructed in the above-indicated manner is combined with a casing the wall of which closely surrounds the cylindrical body over a substantial part or substantial parts of its circumference to form with the ribs or fins. Arched ducts extending between an inlet opening and an outlet opening for hot gases, through which these hot gases intended to heat the boiler can therefore enter the arched ducts and leave them.
In such an arrangement the cylindrical body is preferably placed substantially horizontally and the hot gas inlet opening communicates with a firebox or hearth chamber on which the fire rests.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
wall which partially surrounds the cylindrical body and in which the hot gases are generated.
In any case, the circumferential wall of the cylindrical body is preferably cast in one piece with its circumferential fins, advantageously in a shell and preferably in a light alloy, a good conductor of heat such as a silicon-aluminum alloy, in which case the fins may be deep due to the high thermal conductivity of the metal from which they are formed.
The outer circumferential fins on the cylindrical body are preferably separate annular fins, but one can also have one or more helical fins.
The invention can be put into practice in various ways; hereinafter, by way of example, a simple construction of a boiler according to the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an end elevation, partially in section, of a complete boiler.
Fig. 2 is an end view on a larger scale, and also partially in section, of the upper part only of the boiler shown in FIG. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal vertical section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
In the form of construction shown, the boiler comprises a hearth or combustion chamber A provided with a grate A1 and a loading opening A2 normally closed by the usual door B. On the hearth or combustion chamber A the actual boiler is mounted which comprises a steam and water chamber formed by a cylindrical body with a cylindrical circumferential wall C, in a light alloy which is a good conductor of heat, molded in the shell, such as a silicon alloy. suitable aluminum, with a series of ribs or deep circumferential fins C1, and provided with ends D, D1 fixed to the ends of the circumferential wall by a series of bolts with nuts D2, for example, so as to complete the steam and water chamber.
The cylindrical body, C, C1, D, D1 is surrounded and supported by a casing comprising side walls E, which closely surround the cylindrical body over a significant part of its circumference and come right up against the edges of the fins C1, like c ' is indicated at E1, and end walls E2, E3, pierced with openings in which are mounted and extend the ends of the cylindrical body.
The lower angles of the walls E2 and E3 of the envelope are connected by angles E4 on which the lower edges of the walls E rest and the lower edge of the envelope thus formed rests on the upper edge of the hearth A so as to be supported by the latter, while this envelope is further hinged to the upper edge of the hearth on one side thereof, as indicated at F, so as to allow the entire envelope to oscillate around of this boiler at the same time as the cylindrical body C, C1, C2 and C3 located in the casing, with a view to uncovering the underside of the cylindrical body.
Asbestos strips or the equivalent may be disposed between the upper and lower edges of the walls E2 and E3 and the parts with which they come into contact to form a gas-tight seal.
In addition, according to a variant, each of the side walls of the casing can be established so as to be able to pivot outwards around its lower edge and then be lifted and released from its angle E4, to uncover the cylindrical body. and allow it to be cleaned.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A rectangular opening for the exhaust of gases is formed by the upper edges of the walls E, E2, E3 and communicates with a chimney connector or a gas outlet duct G to which is adapted a short chimney Gl provided with 'a butterfly damper H. The exhaust pipe of a steam engine (not shown) powered by the steam from the boiler can also be connected to an ejector pipe J mounted in the chimney section G1.
The bottom D is shaped so as to present a small sump K in which the sludge tends to collect and from which it can be discharged by a hand valve indicated at K1. In addition, this bottom D is provided at its upper part with a steam outlet duct L provided with a steam trap indicated at L1, formed of a series of perforated plates through which the steam passes. The steam outlet duct L leads to a control valve L2 and also, if desired, to a safety or pressure relief valve L3.
The other bottom D2 is of convex shape and provided at its center with a relatively large opening M communicating with the interior of a dome-shaped chamber N which is fixed thereto. This chamber N comprises in its upper wall a safety valve 0 and in its lower wall a feed water inlet valve P, the stems of which are coaxial with each other and extend to the interior of the chamber near the upper and lower surfaces of a projection Q formed on the lever Q1 articulated at Q2 and actuated by a float Q3 which is connected thereto and is located inside the cylindrical body C, C2, C3.
The arrangement and operation of the float and of the mechanism which it actuates are described in the Applicant's patent of the same date entitled "Improvements to safety devices for steam boilers" and are such that the float allows the feed water inlet valve P to open if the water level in the boiler falls below a predetermined point, while if it falls further, the projection Q of the lever Ql exerts a force on the safety valve 0 which tends to lift it so as to reduce the pressure of the vapor for which it will open.
The hot gases generated by the combustion in the hearth or combustion chamber A can pass, through the inlet opening formed between the lower edges of the walls E, E21 and E2, into the arcuate passages formed between the wall E and the fins C to gain the outlet opening formed between the upper edges of the walls E, E2 and E3 and from there, through the connection G, the chimney G.
The device indicated in R is a hand pump, by means of which water can be sent into the boiler through a check valve P1 to start it.
It should also be noted that all the pipes of the boiler are connected to edges D and D1 or to chamber N and that when they have been disconnected as well as the exhaust pipe connected to the ejection pipe J, it is possible to tilt the casing E, E2, E3 with the cylindrical body C, C2, C3 and its associated members around the hinge F to uncover the lower face of the cylindrical body and the adjacent ends of the arched passages between the walls E and the fins C1, for cleaning.
The boiler is capable of burning a wide variety of fuels so that it can be used in places where only locally obtainable fuel is available, such as wood. The ease with which parts exposed to hot gases can be examined
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and cleaned is therefore of great importance, as many of the fuels employed can be of a nature which tends to leave carbonaceous or gummy deposits on the surfaces of these ducts.
