<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to improvements to potato collectors of the type comprising a rotating drum having the shape of a truncated cone comprising a casing or wall consisting of wires or bars extending longitudinally and placed at an appropriate distance. one from the other, and arranged to be fixed to the side of a potato harvester just outside of the projection members thereof, said drum being equipped, on its inner surface, transport members in the form of screw threads which, while the drum rolls on the field, bring the potatoes to the discharge end of said drum.
The main object of the present invention is a drum of the type specified above, in which the internal transport members are not constituted by members fixed transversely on the inner surface of the casing of the drum, in order to prevent seed potatoes, etc., are hooked by these members and prevent the passage of soil in the gaps between the wires or longitudinal bars o
The invention is essentially characterized by the fact that the means of transport consist of one or more channels in the form of a helix, formed by parts curved inwardly of the individual wires or bars forming the casing of the drum.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description, with reference to the accompanying drawings,
in which - Figure 1 is a schematic vertical section of a preferred embodiment of the invention, and - Figure 2 is a section along the line II-II of Figure 1.

In the drawings ;, the reference notation 1 designates a drum having the shape of a truncated cone, the peripheral wall of which is formed of wires or bars 2 extending longitudinally and spaced apart from each other in a appropriate measure. The drum 1 is secured, at one of its ends, to an end ring 39 arranged to roll on the field and;, at its other end, to a hollow cylindrical member 49 which is supported;) so as to be able to rotate without being able to move axially9 in a housing 5. This housing is fixedly mounted in a frame 6 mounted on wheels 7, by which the frame can be pulled on the field in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the drum.
For the sake of clarity, a few longitudinal bars 2 have only been shown ;, but it is obvious that there are a sufficient number of them so that the gap between them, at the larger end of the drum, becomes sufficiently small for potatoes cannot pass between the bars
According to the invention, the drum 1 is provided on its inner surface with a helical conveying channel 8 directed so that the potatoes separated from the earth, while the drum rolls on the field, are carried upwards along the sloping wall of the drum and ejected at the smaller end of the latter.
In the embodiment shown, the helical channel 8 is formed by inwardly curved portions 9 of the various longitudinal bars 2. These curved portions, which thus form the side walls of the channel, are directed approximately perpendicular to the channel. axis of the drum, so that the side wall of the channel having a substantially ring-shaped cross section, which faces the larger end of the drum, receives a steeper slope than the opposite side wall of said channel, as shown in figure 1.
As will be understood, the curved parts 9 of each of the longitudinal bars are offset, in the longitudinal direction, by the necessary distance from the curved parts of the previous bar, in order to obtain the desired helical conformation of the channel 8.
Along a certain length of the drum 1, at its smallest end, that is to say at its end having the smallest diameter, the inwardly curved parts 8 are connected to the circumferential part of a helical plate 11 wedged on a shaft 10 and extending towards the outer end of the cylindrical member 4o The helix 11 may also, as regards its part situated inside the drum proper, be constituted by a corresponding extension of the inwardly curved parts 9. One end of the shaft 10 can be fixed to the outer end wall 12 of the cylindrical member 4 and the other end to a screen 13 arranged in the drum, as shown.
The screen 139, the outer diameter of which is somewhat smaller than that of the terminal ring 3, has the shape of a helical plate extending one full turn and whose pitch is similar to the pitch of channel 8, in so that it can be placed in line with the curved parts 9, which, at their inner ends, pass through the material of the screen and thus do not restrict the cross section of the channel. Screen 13, which has a small central opening, is used to collect the potato and potato mixture thrown or thrown by the potato harvester and limits the distance at which the potatoes mixed with the soil are launched or projected o
At the outer end of the helical plate 11, an opening 14 is made in the wall 12 of the cylinder 4.
This opening 14 communicates during the rotation of the drum with an opening 15 formed in the end wall 16 of the housing 5 and through which the potatoes are discharged into a bag or other suitable transport container which is placed on it. a platform = form 17 secured to the frame 60
When the drum drive frame described above is attached by suitable connections (not shown) to the side of a potato harvester and the potato harvester is pulled into the field, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
drum begins to rotate in housing 59 when ring 3 rests on the ground.
When the projection members of the potato harvester throw, in a manner known per se, earth and potatoes into the drum, the screen 13 limits the projection :) so that the earth and the apples of earth are collected in the first part of the drum, in which the earth is separated, falling between the longitudinal bars 2. The potatoes freed of the earth, are brought, during the rotation of the drum, by the channel 8 and the helical plate 11, up to the opening 15 in the casing, from where they are directly collected in a suitable transport bag or container.
The longitudinal threads or bars forming the wall of the drum may be interconnected, for example, by an outer thread or the like passing through the curved portions 9 and to which the bars are suitably attached or linked.
