PISTON, A GARNITURE D'ETANCHEITE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

PISTON, WITH GASKET.
It is known that the seal between a piston with a seal and the wall of the surrounding cylinder is obtained by the fact that the annular lips of the seal are compressed radially against the wall of the cylinder. under the action of the pressure prevailing in the space located above the piston. The gaskets must therefore be made of an elastic material, formerly they were almost exclusively made of leather or rubber, nowadays synthetic plastics or certain easily deformable metal alloys are used.
The piston body itself, which is effectively divided into several parts for the purpose of facilitating the placement and replacement of the gaskets, is made as known from a rigid material, such as iron, metal or hardwood. To achieve a precise and solid seat for the gaskets in the piston body, the bearing faces must be machined and the piston elements themselves must be assembled by means of special fasteners. The manufacture of such pistons is therefore relatively expensive and complicated.
The object of the invention is to considerably simplify the construction and manufacture of pistons, with seals. Substantially, it resides in the fact that the piston body and the seal are formed in one piece made of an elastic material.
Such a shaped piece which can be simply cast swabbed or rolled and only the surfaces in contact with the cylinder wall need to be polished afterwards. The manufacture of pistons in one piece, according to the invention, in opposition to the known pistons in several parts, not only makes a substantial saving in labor but eliminates the use of gaskets and avoids leaks.

In addition, it is possible to select from among the available synthetic materials the one which is most suitable for the intended use and which in general is much more resistant to chemical and physical attacks from the pressure fluid used than the material of the old metal pistons or in wood.
It was necessary in many cases to provide the latter with a coating resistant to such attacks, which made its manufacture even more complicated. Another advantage of the invention lies in the fact that the free end of the pistons with rod, or the two ends of the floating pistons which protrude from the location of the seals can be used as resilient stops given the elasticity of the matter of which they are made.
Optionally, they can also function as a sealing valve, which eliminates the need for special sealing discs.
Some embodiments, given by way of nonlimiting example, are shown in the accompanying drawings; in which
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of a massive and floating control piston.
Figure 2 is also a longitudinal section of a modified embodiment and Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of a piston with a rod.
The body 1 of the piston according to FIG. 1 forms with the seals 2 a single piece of a suitable elastic material.
The ends 4 of the piston protruding from the annular lips 3 of the edges 2 represent elastic stops - which can optionally be used as valve discs. The lips 3 are provided in the usual way with whistling edges 5. Between the body itself and the lips 3 there remains an annular space 6 in which the pressure fluid can penetrate and thereby compress the lips 3 against the cylinder wall. .
The embodiment shown in Figure 2 differs from the previous one, in that the body 1 of the piston comprises a core 7 made of a rigid material which is only slightly or not elastic. In addition, the sealing edge 2a is of a much smaller diameter than the edge 2b. The part of the body forming the transition between the latter and the central part of the body of the piston can optionally be used as a bearing surface 8.
When the piston is subjected to reduced forces, the core 7 may not be provided, in this case the body 1 of the piston is hollow.
According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the body 1 of the piston has a continuous coating 9, the ends of which are provided with annular sealing faces 3.
The ends of the piston are not provided with the stops 4 and the lips 3. annular sealing faces delimit a recess 10 in the shape of a saucer. The end 11 of a piston rod 12 constituting the elastic core of the piston body is provided with grooves 13 and bosses 14 allowing rigid attachment of the piston body to the rod.
In all embodiments the sealing lips 3 can be made especially flexible by means of a suitable softening process, the piston bodies 1 can be made especially rigid by means of a suitable hardening process.
