<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PERFECTIONS RELATING TO THE REMOVAL OF VANADIUM AND / OR SODIUM,
OF OIL AND OIL PRODUCTS.
The present invention relates to the removal of vanadium and / or sodium, petroleum and petroleum products.
In another British Patent Application No. 16,540 / 49, the Applicant described a process for removing vanadium from petroleum products, in which the petroleum product is subjected to treatment with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. d9hydrogenation resistant to sulfur and under temperature and pressure conditions such as. the vanadium is either deposited on or incorporated into the catalyst.
Applicants have now discovered a process whereby vanadium and / or sodium can be removed in large amounts or completely from petroleum or petroleum products. The process can be successfully applied to crude petroleum using a comparatively inexpensive catalyst, and can be operated with substantially complete removal of vanadium and sodium, for operating periods of at least 600 hours.
According to the invention, sodium is removed from petroleum or a petroleum product by contacting with bauxite under conditions of temperature and pressure such that sodium is deposited on or incorporated into the bauxite. -this..
The degree of sodium removal is appreciable at a temperature of 650 F and gradually increases with increasing temperature until it is virtually complete at 850 F. The preferred temperature is 780 F.
At 780 F the degree of sodium removal is appreciable - even at atmospheric pressure and increases with increasing pressure.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
pressure until an apparent maximum of about 85% is reached at an effective pressure of the order of 100 to 200 pounds per square inch.
If the feed contains vanadium in addition to sodium, the degree of vanadium removal has been found to be low, ranging from 0 to 650 F up to approximately 15% at 800 F. At 850 F there is. has increased vanadium removal but increased feedstock decomposition results with a short processing time due to carbon deposition.
At a temperature of 780 F, vanadium removal increases with pressure, from 10% at atmospheric pressure to an apparent maximum of 28% at effective pressures in the range of 100 to 200 pounds per square inch.
It has been found that the degree of sodium removal can be maintained and that the degree of vanadium removal is greatly increased by contacting the feedstock with bauxite in the presence of hydrogen.
According to another feature of the invention, therefore, sodium and / or vanadium is removed from petroleum or a petroleum product by contact with bauxite in the presence of hydrogen under conditions of temperature and pressure such. whether the sodium and / or the vanadium are deposited on or incorporated into the bauxite.
Sodium is, in general, removed much more easily than vanadium so that it is the vanadium removal conditions which are critical. Vanadium removal is low below 700 F but increases rapidly in the 7000 range. at 800 F. There is a consumption of hydrogen in the process, which increases rapidly at temperatures above 750 F. so that in practice it has been found advantageous to operate at a maximum temperature of 780 F.
The pressure is preferably maintained within the limits of 800 to 1000 pounds per square inch.
It has been found that about 70% of the vanadium in a Kuwait crude oil containing 22 parts per thousand vanadium can be removed over a catalyst life of at least 650 hours with a hydrogen consumption of 65 cubic feet per barrel. , under the following conditions.
Space velocity 1 v / v / hour
Temperature 780 F
Hydrogen recycling speed 4000 cubic feet / barrel
Effective pressure 1000 pounds per square inch
Under these conditions, 90-95% of the sodium originally present in the crude oil is removed.
A small advantage is achieved by increasing the recycle rate above 600 cubic feet per barrel, but when the recycle rate is reduced below 2000 cubic feet per barrel the residual vanadium content increases dramatically.
The process of the invention is especially advantageous when applied to the processing of crude oil. The application of the so-called hydrofining process to crude oil has been described in British Patent Application 220050/50, the use of cobalt molybdate type catalysts being preferred.
The higher boiling point fractions of crude oil often contain traces of vanadium and sodium, and it has been shown that in the hydrofining of petroleum and petroleum residues significant proportions of vanadium and sodium are removed by and deposited on the cobalt molybdate catalyst, and this deposition causes a rapid decline in the activity of the catalyst - after hours under current, which activity is not fully restored at regeneration in the usual way. The treatment of crude oil or a residue, according to the present invention, will, by
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Therefore, results in a significant improvement in the hydrofinishing process as applied to these materials.
A two-step process of treating a crude oil or residue according to the present invention followed by hydrofining of the crude oil or treated residue forms the subject of UK Patent Application No. 6619/51. .
Traces of vanadium and sodium are also found in petroleum feedstocks, such as waxy distillates, which are prone to cracking in the presence of a cracking catalyst, which may be a natural clay, such as montmorillonite, or a synthetic material, for example an alumina silica gel, for the production of products with lower boiling points. In this case, the presence of vanadium and sodium in the feed causes a slow decline in catalyst inactivity, which is not restored on regeneration and which eventually necessitates replacement of the catalyst.
The present invention therefore includes in its spirit a process which comprises subjecting a catalytic cracking feedstock to a treatment for the removal of vanadium and / or sodium as described above, followed by cracking. catalyst of the treated feedstock.
The invention will now be described with reference to the following example.
EXAMPLE 1.
A petroleum residue representing 52% by volume of a crude oil from Iran was passed over roasted Indian bauxite at a space speed of 1 v / v / hour and at temperatures of 650, 700, 750, 800 and 850. F. Each treatment was for 50 hours except the last one at 850 F which had to be stopped due to excessive coke formation.
The results are given in Table 1.
