<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

FILLING DEVICE.
The present invention relates to an apparatus for introducing non-liquid material into a container having circular horizontal cross sections. Apparatus of this kind is used, for example, in the sugar industry for filling a diffuser with slices or other fragments of sugar beets.
A known device of this type comprises at least one downwardly inclined neck which can rotate about an axis, the drop spout of this chute being, in the working position, off-center with respect to the spout. container axis.
A disadvantage of this and other such apparatus is that the material is not uniformly distributed throughout the horizontal section of the container, so that a non-uniform density of the material in the container results. the recipient. In addition, since the free fall of the material is prevented, the filling always has a central recess at the top which makes it impossible with known devices to completely fill the container.
The aim of the present invention is to eliminate these drawbacks. For this purpose, and according to the invention, the chute is arranged to be moved in a vertical plane so that its chute spout moves towards the center or moves away.
'Thanks to the movement of the chute', it is 'possible to obtain a perfectly uniform distribution' of the material and an equally uniform density of the filling, so that a liquid flowing through the receptacle meets at all points. substantially equal resistance to flow in cross section. This is particularly advantageous in the application of the apparatus for the introduction of rondel-

the or other sugar beet fragments in a diffuser, the uniform distribution in fact ensuring a uniform and perfect leaching of the material, and obtaining a raw juice with maximum transparency.
In addition, the characteristic of the invention offers the possibility of completely filling the container with material falling in free fall by virtue of the complete retraction of the chute. This aim can also be achieved by providing the chute at the rear of its chute spout with an additional closable orifice, and of adjustable section if desired.
Other characteristics of the invention will emerge from the following description of two embodiments of the new filling device, with reference to the appended drawing.
@ There Fig 1 is a side elevational view of a filling apparatus corresponding to the first embodiment.
-Fig. 2 is a front elevational view and
Fig 3 is a plan view of this device.
Fig. 4 represents a variant.
The filling device shown in figs. 1 to 3 comprises a frame 2 provided with wheels to move on rails 1 and to come to be placed above the container to be filled. The frame 2 carries a funnel-shaped hopper 3 extended downwards by a downcomer 3 ′ of rectangular section (fig. 3). The upper edge of the duct 3, 3 ′ is provided with rollers 4 resting on a concentric circular rail 5 integral with the frame .. which allows the hopper to rotate around its axis. The rotational drive force is provided by an electric motor 6 mounted on a lateral extension of the frame. A lock 2 'allows the frame to be locked in a position in which the axis of the hopper coincides with that of the container.
Below the descent duct 3 'of the hopper is provided a chute 7 descending on a slope, partially surrounding the lower orifice of the descent duct, and suspended pendulum by links 8, 8' from a shaft 9 rotating in supports 10 fixed to the downcomer 3 '. The chute can therefore rotate with the hopper around the vertical axis thereof. A stop 11 provided on the descent duct 3 'of the hopper is intended to hold the chute in an extreme working position as shown in fig 1.
The position of the shaft 9 and the length of the connecting rods 8, 8 'is chosen such that the entire chute can be brought to the vertical position shown in dotted lines on fig 1. For this purpose, it is possible to use a cable or other traction element 12 passing as in a hoist over pulleys 13,14 mounted in supports 15,16 respectively secured to the chute 7 and the descent duct 3 '.
The strand. pulling cable 12 is engaged in a peripheral groove formed in a ring 17 centered on the axis of the descent conduit 3 'and arranged to rotate freely around this axis. Said ring is located above a flange 18 of the downpipe, flange, which carries a friction lining 19 on the upper face.
The ring 17, which is spaced from the periphery of the downcomer duct 3 ′ of rectangular section, and whose inner periphery is guided by rollers (not shown) arranged in a circular row centered on the axis of the duct 3 ′, carries by means of wedges 20 near the inner edge of this ring a second ring 21 also guided inside by rollers and disposed opposite a third ring 22 integral with the frame, the lower face '' said ring 22 also being provided with a friction lining 23.
Between the rings 17 and 21 are interposed at diametrically opposed points, and near the outer periphery, two rollers 24
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in contact with these rings and mounted on off-center journals of small shafts 25 rotating in bearings 26 integral with the frame 2.
Each of the shafts 25 is integral with an arm 27. The arms are interconnected by a transverse bar 28. Using this mechanism, it is possible to place all of the two rings 17, 21 in three pe - if yours are different, in this case either in an upper position in which the ring 21 is applied against the friction lining 23 of the fixed ring 22 which immobilizes the rings 17 'and 21 or in a middle position in which the assembly of the two rings 17, 21 can freely rotate about its axis, and in a lower position in which the ring 17 rests on the friction lining 19 of the flange 18, from so that the assembly rotates with the hopper.
In the descent duct of the hopper are mounted two shutters 29, 29 'placed opposite one another. Using a threaded spindle 30, having two threads respectively on the right and on the left, it is possible to bring the two flaps closer to or apart from each other to ensure the descent of the material in the center of the 3 'duct.
It emerges from the description of this device that, during operation, that is to say during the rotation of the hopper, the ring 17 is kept in contact with the flange 18 and the assembly therefore rotates with the hopper. hopper. No traction is therefore exerted on the cable 12, and the chute remains stationary relative to the descent duct 3 'of the hopper 3. On the other hand, if all of the rings 17, 21 are raised by a maneuver of the bar 28, by involving the shifting of the journals of the shafts 25, and if the ring 21 is thus applied against the fixed ring 22, the ring 21 is stopped as well as the grooved ring 17.
The cable 12 then winds around the grooved ring 17 and rotates the chute 7 around the axis 9 in the direction of the punched position of Fig. 1. If we place the set of rings 17,21 in the middle position in which it can rotate freely, the chute can be rotated in the opposite direction under the action of its own weight.
The operator operating the filling device can therefore move the chute spout at will towards the axis of the container or starting from this axis. It can also completely retract the chute (dotted position). In this way, the operator can precisely control the filling of the diffuser. By retracting the chute towards the end of filling, he can complete this filling by letting the material fall directly from the downcomer 3 'into the container.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment which has just been described with reference to the drawing. Instead of hinging the chute, it can also be mounted so that it can translate in a vertical plane, either in the direction of inclination or perpendicular to the axis of the container.
Fig 4 represents another embodiment. In this case, the descent chute 31 is cut obliquely at the front end so as to present a side rim or threshold 32 starting from a point on the front edge of the chute to a point at least adjacent on the vertical plane passing through the axis of rotation, and transverse to the chute. The shape of the rim or threshold is determined by tests in such a manner and in such a relationship with the increasingly large circles described by different points of said rim during the rotation of the chute, that there results a uniform discharge of material. throughout the cross section of the container.
It is also possible to provide two or more edges or thresholds of this kind in the chute by making slots in its bottom which widen towards the front.
