'PERFEeH)NNEMENS': APPORTES" A\i!X' PROCEDES ,ET ,DISPOS i'I'IFS "POUR"REV#R" , 'PAR "mURS 'BORDB :DES !EEUÏLLES -OU 'COUCHES EN J),ES :,TIEBES 'THERMOPUSTIQUES.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

'PERFEeH) NNEMENS': PROVIDED "A \ i! X 'METHODS, AND, DISPOSI'I'IFS" FOR "REV # R", "BY" WALLS' BORDB: OF! EEUÏLLES -OR 'LAYERS IN J), ES:, THERMOPUSTIC TIEBES '.
The invention relates to methods and devices for joining at their edges sheets or layers of thermoplastic materials.
Several attempts have been made heretofore to join sheets of thermoplastic materials, in particular by using an adhesive, by subjecting these sheets to pressure, by resorting to high frequency welding, etc.
The object of the invention is to provide a method and a device by which this bond between thermoplastic sheets or layers can be obtained quickly, efficiently and without the intervention of complicated mechanisms.
The process for forming a joint between sheets of a thermoplastic material consists mainly in clamping the superposed sheets, which it is desired to join together by a joint, between two jaws so that a part of these sheets remain exposed and not clamped, to cause a heat to act on this exposed part to produce the melting and softening of the substance constituting said sheets and to allow or cause the cooling of the molten parts so that they can hard - cir and form a seal between the sheets at the location of said exposed part.
A preferred embodiment of the invention consists in introducing two superimposed sheets, made of a thermoplastic material, into a clamping device, in interrupting the advance of these sheets and in clamping the superimposed sheets, at a point of contact. their length, between two jaws of this device, to be severed or cut off said sheets near the place where they are clamped so that narrow marginal bands of these sheets protrude on the jaws of the clamping device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ge, to cause heat to act on these bands to produce their melting and softening and to interrupt the supply of heat to allow the molten materials to cool and solidify to form a seal along the gap existing between said jaws.
By squeezing the layers together in this way and close to the cutting line, not only is this cutting easier but the jaws also form a barrier which stops the softening effect of the heat, this effect. thus being located at the place where. we want to form the joint.
The process can be carried out in a continuous manner and following a cycle of advancing the sheets, cutting them, heating them, cooling them, feeding them, and so on, which forms a series of two layers of thermoplastic sheets which are connected transversely to each other with respect to the direction of advance.
It will be seen that in this way and by using a flattened tubular work, intended for example to form bags or containers which are closed on three sides and open on the fourth side, that these parts can be manufactured in series.
Any thermoplastic material suitable for the objects to be obtained is liable to melt by the effect of moderate heat and form a seal in the above-mentioned manner can be used, but it has been found to be very suitable. to use polyethylene. This material becomes plastic at a relatively low temperature and a comparatively small amount of heat is required to form a seal which, as can be seen, is very strong.
The thickness and therefore the strength of the seal may vary but it is preferred that it is such that the seal does not form a substantial obtrusion in the finished article, for example a bag, so that the protruding part of the thermoplastic sheets beyond the clamping jaws, before heating, can be relatively narrow. Likewise, the joint is generally continuous over the entire width of the layers formed by the sheets, but in certain specific cases this joint may also be interrupted or have a length less than that of the total width.
The subject of the invention is also an apparatus for carrying out the above-mentioned method, this apparatus comprising a device with two clamping jaws and a knife, for example with a guillotine, attached to said jaws and suitable for cutting the thermoplastic material close to - mothballed but at a reduced distance from the active faces of said jaws.
So that the marginal parts of the layers of thermoplastic material protrude by a determined length relative to the clamping jaws, means referred to below as "anvil" can be used, these means being arranged so as to cooperate with the edge. cutting edge of the knife as a bearing surface or edge when cutting takes place, such means being movable as the knife moves to leave narrow, lamellar marginal bands of the thermoplastic material which are apparent and which freely protrude on the jaws to be able to be melted when the knife has performed its function.
The device further comprises a movable nozzle for projecting a hot gas or a flame against the thermoplastic material which protrudes on the clamping jaws in order to cause the melting of said material.
In addition, the device can advantageously be arranged in such a way as to be able to automatically perform the various necessary operations.

clamping, cutting, heating, loosening and advancement of the materials to be treated, for example using a machine described below.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, a machine established in accordance with the invention.
Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 show, respectively in plan, in elevation from one side and in partial elevation from the opposite side of the machine as well as in cross section according to IV-IV fig. 1, a machine established in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 5 shows, in perspective, how a bag looks when it is detached from the work by cutting.
The machine as shown is suitable for an automatic process for intermittently cutting a work of indeterminate length formed by a flattened tubular piece of polyethylene and for heat sealing the edges cut and applied one to the other. other material, while it is still attached to the work, which makes it possible to obtain a series of bags closed on three sides.
The work A consisting of a tubular part is brought to the active part 5 of the machine to undergo the cutting and the closing by heat after which this work advances by a length corresponding to that where the next sectioning must be done. which makes it possible to obtain a bag as shown at B in FIG. 5, the front edge C of this bag being closed in a heat-tight manner while its rear edge D remains open.
The frame 1 of the machine comprises a pair of arms or supports 2 oriented towards the rear to serve as a support for a rotary shaft 3 carrying the coils 4 formed using flattened polyethylene tubes A. For the example shown, two coils 4 are used, but it is understood that the number of these can be any according to the capacity of the machine.
In addition, these coils can have any desired width.
The frame 1 carries an electric motor 6 which drives, by means of a pulley and belt transmission and a reduction gear 7, a main control shaft 8 connected to various mechanisms of the machine.
The tube A advances by frictional contact between two food rollers 9 and 10 which cooperate (fig. 4), after having passed above and below transverse shafts 11 and 12 which are used for, dressing and setting. tension of said tube. The rollers 9 and 10 are interconnected by gears established at their ends and the shaft of the lower roller 10 carries a toothed wheel 17 which is driven by a rack 13 driven in a reciprocating motion. This rack is articulated to a pivot 33 engaged in a slot 34 of a block 14 so that its position is adjustable relative to said block in order to vary the stroke of the feed rollers. In the slot 34 is also housed a finger 35 mounted eccentrically on a disc 15 carried by the control shaft 8.
Block 14 is articulated at 36 to side wall 37 of the machine frame. Therefore, the rack 13 moves at different speeds in both directions of its movement, that is, when it moves from left to right with respect to Figure 2, its speed is higher than in the opposite direction and the feed rollers 10 and 11 only rotate for about a quarter of the time it takes for the shaft 8 to make a full revolution, for example.
A ratchet 16, co-operating with a ratchet wheel 18 wedged on the shaft of the roller 10, is provided to allow a. drive in one direction by the rack 13 of the lower roller-10, so that the feed rollers advance the tube A step by step. The upper roller shaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
11 is biased downward by springs 19 (Figs. 2 and 3) so that this roller can be lifted to allow the initial introduction of the polyethylene tube A. Cam locking means (not shown) can be used for this purpose.
Interrupting the advancement of tube A is used to clamp, cut and close its front end by heat.
For this purpose, the head 5 of the machine comprises two transverse jaws 20 and 21 which cooperate with each other, the lower jaw (21) being fixed and the other being able to be raised and lowered in fixed guides 22 by means of connecting rods. side 23 on which act oscillating levers 24 interconnected and through the machine by a common rotary shaft 38. One of the levers 24 is biased by a tension spring 25 hooked to a fixed point of the side wall 26 of the frame. This lever 24 carries a roller 27 which rolls on a cam 28 fixed to a shaft 29 established transversely in the frame. This shaft 29 is driven by the control shaft 8 with the aid of a chain transmission comprising a pair of endless chains 30 arranged in a V and actuated by toothed wheels 31.
The cam 38 has a recess 32 to allow the levers 24 to pivot and lift the jaw 20 during the advancement of the tube A.
During the longer return stroke of the rack 13, the jaw 20 presses the fixed jaw 21 to clamp the tube and to act as a barrier preventing the flow of molten polyethylene, as described below.
The camshaft 29 carries, outside the wall 26 of the frame, another cam 39, the boss 40 of which acts on a roller 41 mounted on a lever 42. This lever 42 is journalled with the aid of a sleeve 44, mounted on the end of the shaft 38, in the side wall 26 and it is biased, at its opposite end, by a tension spring 43 hooked to a fixed point. The sleeve 44 is connected, on the inside of the wall 26, to a lever 71, of reduced length, which in turn is connected by a link 45 to an oscillating lever 46. Two levers 46 are established on either side. other of the machine and they move together being both attached to a shaft 47 which can rotate about its axis.
Each of the levers 46 carries at its front end a rod 48 by means of which it is connected to a knife 49 of the guillotine type, which extends over the entire width of the machine and which can be moved in a reciprocating motion. in the head 5 thereof and in a plane which is located a little in front of the front face of the clamp 20, 21. In addition, each of the levers 46 is articulated, near its front end, to a pusher 50 which is supported by its lower end on a bracket 51 fixed to a common plate 52 which is mounted on pivots and which acts as an anvil.
The arrangement is such that the boss 40 of the cam 39 intervenes, for each complete revolution of the camshaft 29, to cause a rapid tilting forwards and downwards of the two levers 46 to lower the knife. 49 while simultaneously rocking the anvil 52 against the fixed lower jaw. This anvil 52 has a thickness, preferably equal to about 1.5 mm which corresponds to the distance at which the plane of descent of the knife is located. These members are arranged such that the anvil 52 is applied against the jaw 21 just when the knife cuts the work so that this anvil can form a support from the bottom of this work.
There occurs an instantaneous separation of the knife 49 and a forward pivoting of the anvil 52 by the traction exerted by the rods 53 on which the tension springs act, which leaves a flattened tube which forms. slightly protruding from the gap between the clamped jaws 20 and 21., as visible at E in figure 5.

This end of the tube A is kept closed by moving a nozzle 54 along the protruding part of the sectioned tube and facing this part, the displacement of the nozzle being made by means of the shaft 8 "which serves to the drive of the other moving parts For this purpose the camshaft 29 carries at its outer end, beyond the cam 39, a disc 55 to which is articulated an eccentric connecting rod 56 in a poiht which is adjustable so that the movement of the nozzle 54 can be properly regulated.
This connecting rod 56 is connected to a lever 57 articulated by one end 58 to the wall 26, this lever 57 being extended at its front end by an articulated arm 59 in the form of a fork and connected to an endless chain 60 which works in a vertical plane. The upper toothed wheel on which the chain passes is wedged on an axis 61 which also carries the toothed wheel of a second endless chain 62, the strands of which pass horizontally in front of the front part of the machine facing the gap formed between ' the clamping jaws 20 and 21. As a result, the rotation of the camshaft 29 causes the chain 62 to move back and forth.
On the chain 62 is mounted a carriage 63 which can slide on a cross member 64 having a square cross section and on which can be angularly displaced a cylindrical body 65 which supports the nozzle 54 as well as a pipe (not shown) to bring to it. - here combustible gas.
The body 65 also carries two side arms 66 each provided with a roller 67.
The rollers 67 cooperate with cams provided on sleeves 68 and 68 'engaged on the cross member 64 and occupying positions such as when the carriage 63 reaches the end of its travel to the left, that is to say upwards. of figure 1, the corresponding roller 67 passes over the profiled part of the sleeve 68 'which forces the body 65' to pivot until the nozzle 54 is oriented horizontally towards the gap existing between the jaws of the clamp.
,
The carriage then moves from left to right across the machine and the nozzle occupies a position such that a flame is moved along the cut edges of one or more flattened tubes, these edges protruding towards the front on the clamp 20, 21. The result is that the material constituting the protruding marginal parts melts and softens, the jaws 20 and 21 of the clamp limiting this effect by forming a barrier which prevents the fusion from taking place at all. beyond these edges. When the nozzle has passed the polyethylene cools, and a strong seal forms.
Jaws 20 and 21 can be cooled by passing liquid through them to achieve this effect and to cause rapid cooling of the polyethylene. When the carriage 63 reaches the right end of its stroke, the roller 67 established at this end passes over the profiled part of the sleeve 68 which moves the nozzle 54 in a vertical direction and it remains in this position during the return of the tube. carriage towards the left end of its stroke. During this return stroke the jaws of the gripper are separated, the work advances and the closed bag B is directed towards a container 69 established at the front of the machine. It can be seen in FIG. 4 that the carriage 63 comprises a positioning member 70, for example a spring ball, to maintain this carriage temporarily at each of its characteristic positions.
It follows from the above that the machine makes it possible to obtain a fully automatic intermittent advance of the polyethylene work over a predetermined length, the clamping of the work, the sectioning of the work at the end. place corresponding to the end of the bag, the closing by the heat of the end which has just been severed by a mobile flame and so on following the original cycle. In addition, these movements are regulated relative to each other in a positive manner due to the location and operation of the components described above.
As is evident and as it follows moreover from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application.

cation nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts, which have been more especially indicated; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants. Thus, for example, it is possible to cool not only the clamping jaws 20 and 21 but also the anvil 52 and the knife 49 by passing a forced current of liquid through these members, the latter then being constituted by hollow parts.
In addition, it should be noted that the method according to the invention can be used for machines other than those which operate automatically. One can use, for example, a device controlled by hand, this device comprising two clamping jaws, a pivoting knife and an anvil in the form of a thin bar or a rigid strip which is mounted immediately. below the gap existing between said jaws, occupying a location, such with respect to the path followed by the knife, that its upper and outer edge forms a cutting surface which cooperates with the cutting edge of the knife, this anvil being able to come into contact with the knife and can be moved away from the work by the knife during the active stroke of the latter but after the actual cutting has taken place.
According to a variant, an additional advancement can be provided but over a reduced length of the structure after the sectioning has taken place for a similar purpose.
The movement of the knife can also be used to cause the separation and the approach of the jaws of the clamp by a direct action on one of the jaws or by the release of the latter which causes or allows the separation of the jaws. two jaws and their approach when the knife moves in the opposite direction.
For an apparatus of this kind one can use a burner or a nozzle delivering a hot gas which is moved by hand along a rail or a guide established along the gap existing between the jaws of the clamp.
The bags obtained according to the invention can be used for a large number of applications, for example for packaging vegetables, fruits or other foods, sweets, clothes, series of small objects, toys, etc. liquids, etc.
When these objects have been introduced into the bag obtained in this way, the open end of said bag can be closed by pressure or in any other suitable way, for example by using an additional strip of a waterproof material, for example. in paper.
In addition, by using a transparent thermoplastic material, such as polyethylene, the contents of the bags can be seen from the outside.
For the same reason, sheets or the like which bear printed indications, for example for advertising, can be introduced into the bag.
