BOITE METALLIQUE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

METAL BOX.
The invention relates to boxes as used by the hundreds of thousands annually for picking, repacking and shipping fruit, for example apples. The box according to the invention is made of sheet metal, arrangements being made to allow stacking of boxes, whether or not they are filled with lids. Such tin boxes are light but sturdy.
As these boxes are formed so that several empty boxes can be folded and stacked or tucked into one another when empty, each box can be returned to the point of origin and used several times thus avoiding waste. wood used in wooden boxes used to date and which cannot be returned economically because of their bulk.
Although the metal box has a higher initial price, its reusability makes it less expensive than wooden boxes.
The invention is applicable to folding boxes having straight end and side walls and hinged together, or to boxes with slanted side walls, which do not fold but which can nestle together. in the others.
With regard to the stacking of boxes ;, the invention provides on each box means intended not only to support another box placed on the first, but which engage the edges of the bottom of the upper box +, to avoid the displacement of the latter relative to the lower box.
Fig. 1 is a general isometric view of a transport box of which all parts except one are shown in the erected position, various parts broken away to better show the details and interior construction. 2 is on the one hand a longitudinal section in a vertical plane through a lower box, and of a part of an upper box, placed on the first, and on the other hand a side elevation of such box
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The box shown is straight-sided, of the type used for shipping apples, and has long side walls 1 and short end walls 2, all of sheet metal, the walls being connected to each other at the corners of the box. box using hinge pins 3.
A bead 4 or 5, provided at the upper edge of each floor reinforces the latter and increases its rigidity and, moreover, the bead 5 forms the eye of a hinge, as will be explained below. The walls are stiffened in the vertical direction by the interlocked hinge eyes, which receive the pins 3.
A bottom 8 having the proper dimensions to ensure the closure of the space included in the enclosure defined by the walls 1 and 2 is hinged at 9 on the wall 1 for example. Its opposite edge, but preferably all the other edges have a descending rim 10, intended to fit into a channel 6 opening upwards and provided on the inner lower edge of the other wall, so as to support the bottom 8 when the latter is folded down towards the horizontal position, to in turn support the weight of the fruit placed in the box ,, A pivoting latch 11 provided on the Bond engages under the edge of the side wall in order to block the bottom in this position
A cover 13 has a downward rim 14 along two or more opposite edges, with which it surrounds the beads 4,
this cover being further provided with a descending edge at 15 for fitting against the inner face of the end walls 2. Such a cover can be employed if necessary, although the box will function as a receptacle without it. cover, and could just as well, -support a box placed- on it. even in the absence of a cover, as will be described below,
Bars 18, formed of coarse wire, extend from one side wall 1 to the other and rest on these walls at points slightly inwardly spaced with respect to the end walls 2 of the box.
These bars are supported on arms 19 which are integral with them, and whose inwardly facing ends 20 are pivotally engaged in the beads 5, at the upper edge of the extremity walls. Thus, the bars 18 can be folded down so as to overhang the interior space of the box and to rest on the side walls thereof, as shown to the right of FIG. 1, or else ,, they can be moved apart to .se find outside the end wall, slightly below the upper edge thereof, and in the same general plane as the bead 5, directed towards the exterior, of the latter wall; as shown to the left of FIG. 1.
By forming the arms 19 so that they are tilted down from the hinge at 20 when the bar 18 rests on the upper edge of the side walls, and directing the wire from the bottom upwards at 22 to that at the ends of the bar 18, con realizes that the extensions 22 serve to grip the beads 4 when no cover is provided, or to grip the descending edges 14 of the cover when the latter is in place. this, as well as to maintain the bar 18 per friction in the support position, as well as to retain the cover on the box.
Such bars themselves constitute a support for a box placed above.
In order to prevent displacement by the end or laterally, of the upper box thus supported, stops 21 are provided at each end of the bars 18 intended to retain the bottom of the upper box and prevent its lateral displacement, thus a stop 24 oriented upward and located outside the end of the bottom of the upper box, to prevent displacement thereof by the end. The stops 24 may be formed as part of legs 25 hinged at 27 on the bar 18. Each leg 25 has a length such that it extends outwardly from the bar to a point somewhat beyond the end wall 2, so as to rest on it.
More exactly, the tab must have a length allowing it, as indicated in dotted lines to the left. che of FIG. 1, to extend from the bar 18 folded down, to above the upper edge of the box and above the end of the cover, in order to engage and retain the latter by friction. When the tab 25 is arranged in the manner shown to the right of FIG. 19 it serves as an additional support for the upper box, while the stop
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
24 prevents longitudinal displacement thereof.
When the box has tapered walls, the stops 21 and 24 are offset slightly inward from the positions shown in order to engage directly on the small bridge of the upper box.
It goes without saying that, after having pivoted laterally the bars 18 and their stops, and removing the cover @@ if necessary, the box shown can be folded to give it a substantially flattened shape, this by raising the bottom. 8 around its hinge at 9 towards the inside of the box and by rotating the side walls and at the end at 3.
Flattened boxes can be stacked, to be returned to the starting point for filling and re-filled. Taper-walled boxes - do not fold flat this way, but can be nested under a small gap and returned the same way in view of their employment
