ACID RESISTANT IONIZATION ELECTRODE, FOR ELECTROFILTERS
The invention relates to acid-resistant ionization electrodes for electrostatic precipitators. Its aim is to save costly metal resistant to acids in the construction of ionization electrodes, without the mechanical resistance of the electrodes, in particular that to traction, being reduced.
According to one embodiment of the invention, this object is achieved by the fact that in a body serving as a support and consisting of an acid-resistant material, conductive or non-conductive, sheets, that is to say thin sheets of acid-resistant metal, in particular of precious metal, are arranged so as to be formed.
ionizing spikes or ridges on the surface of the electrode o In the case of very corrosive gases, for example gases containing chlorine, precious metal ionization electrodes could be used for electrical cleaning o
If the electrofiltration is intended to provide powers of 20 KW and more, it would be necessary to use, for reasons of resistance from the point of view of the arc passages, wires having a diameter of 1.5 to 2 mm. a precious metal foil is placed, for example, in a rod serving as an ionization electrode, made of a material resistant to acids, respectively to chlorine, conductive or non-conductive, for example by a synthetic material, we obtain , on the one hand, to make a significant saving in precious metal,
without reducing the resistance of the electrode rod, and, on the other hand, to give the ionization electrodes particularly sharp edges.
In another embodiment of the invention the metallic ionization member is formed by spraying the metal onto a non-conductive, sharp-edged support body. In this case the resistance

required of the acid electrode can be achieved by constituting both the support body and the metallic coating with acid-resistant materials, without the choice of a precious metal coating, for example, incurring economically unacceptable costs . By applying the spray coating to the acid resistant carrier body a great saving in precious metal is achieved.
A third embodiment of the invention relates more especially to acid-proof ionization electrodes for electrostatic precipitators, in particular for the purification of gases containing acid mists, from the sulfuric acid industry, and the like. According to this embodiment, the electrode support body is made of an acid-resistant, non-conductive material, for example an acid-resistant synthetic material, while the metallic conductor is arranged in the form of a wire thin, in this non-conductive body so as to be completely surrounded because last, so that it is not necessary to constitute this conductor by an acid resistant metal.
The surface of the non-conductive body receives, in a manner known per se, sharp edges constituting the ionizing part, without it being necessary to constitute these sharp edges themselves, by a metal. Through the metallic core centrally disposed in the non-conductive body, current and voltage are brought from all directions to the edges and points of the non-conductive body, so that they emit their ionizing charge.
The appended drawings show, by way of non-limiting examples, various embodiments of the invention, namely:
Figures 1 to 10 show elevational views, and corresponding end views, of five exemplary arrangements of a metal foil in ionization electrodes.
FIGS. 11 to 14 represent views in elevation, and the corresponding end views, of two exemplary embodiments of ionization electrodes comprising a metallic part applied by projection.
Figures 15 and 16 show an elevational view and an end view of an exemplary embodiment of an ionization electrode comprising a metallic conductor completely embedded in a non-conductive acid resistant support body.
In Figures 1 to 10 the support body of the ionization electrode is designated by 1 and the metal foil by 2.
Figures 1 and 2 show the simplest arrangement, whereby the metal foil 2 forms on the surface of the rod 1 of the electrode rectilinear ridges or edges, - these ridges or edges can also have a shape in zigzag fashion according to Figures 3 and 4. In the exemplary embodiment shown in Figures 5 and 6, the sheet 2 is arranged in a helix in the body 1 of the electrode, thus exerting an ionizing action all around. The same effect can be obtained by a star arrangement of two or more sheets 2 according to Figures 7 and 8.
According to Figures 9 and 10 several sheets are distributed at a suitable distance from each other over the length of the rod 1 of the electrode, the conductive connection between the sheets being provided by a conductor 3 arranged in the core of the support body .
The invention offers the possibility of using, instead of a lead wire which, for reasons of resistance must have a diameter of 4 mm, a rod of non-conductive material, in which a lead sheet is inserted from the bottom. as shown in the drawings.
The new ionization electrode offers advantages in particular in electrostatic precipitators which serve for the removal of mists, for example the removal of acid mists in wet catalysis and the removal of arsenic, as well as to the purification of gases containing a high percentage of dust per unit volume, since in these cases it is necessary to reckon with passages of arcs, so that the stability and

the tensile strength of the ionization electrodes must be ensured accordingly, without, for this, the required characteristics of the ionization members from the point of view of points or sharp edges, being compromised.
Figures 11 to 14 show two cross sections known per se of electrode support body 4 coated, according to the invention, with an acid resistant metal 5, in particular a precious metal, this metal coating being applied. by projection, for example with a pistol. The coating 5 can extend over the entire surface of the support body 4, or only over the sharp edges of the latter.
In Figures 15 and 16 the reference numeral 6 designates the body. of non-conductive support, provided with ionizing ridges 7, while 8 designates a thin conductive wire housed in the core of the non-conductive body 6.
