Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

BRAKE PADS FOR BICYCLES AND OTHER APPLICATIONS.

Cyclists are well aware of the poor operation in rainy weather, with brake pads acting by grip on both sides of the rim.

Entrained water ;; by the rim forms thereon a liquid film which has the effect of considerably reducing the grip of the pad.

It follows that braking is no longer effective in rainy weather.

The present invention overcomes this drawback by creating a brake pad having a body of customary shape provided at its rear part with a flexible tongue serving as a squeegee for wiping the rim of the wheel in wet weather.

This tongue thus frees the rim of the wet film formed by the entrained water, so that the rim presents itself when braking under conditions similar to those of braking in dry weather.

Various other characteristics of the invention will moreover emerge from the detailed description which follows.

An embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing.

Figure 1 is an elevational view of the brake pad.

Fig 2 is a corresponding plan view.

Fig. 3 is a section taken along line III-III of fig.l.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the brake shoe in the operating position.

A shoe for a cycle brake 1 made of any suitable material comprises a tongue 2, molded with the shoe or attached by any means. This flexible tongue 2 is connected to the body of the pad 3 along a radius of curvature 4 and by two bars 5 and 6. The dis-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

position of the tongue 2 is such that its end 7 is on the same plane as the internal face of the pad 8. Several suction cups 9, preferably staggered, increase the adhesion effect of the surface of the pad on the rim of the wheel.

The device according to the invention operates as follows.

The pad 1 is mounted, as shown in FIG. 4 in the usual way, in a pad holder 10.

The tongue 2 is located at the back of the pad according to the direction of rotation of the wheel. When braking in rainy weather, the tongue 2 integral with the pad comes to rest against the rim 11, the shape of which it follows owing to its flexibility, the result of which is that the rainwater, entrained by the rim, is evacuated by the scraping or sweeping effect produced by the tongue. The rim is therefore perfectly wiped on the way and it is present under the part of the pad producing the braking under the same conditions as if braking in dry weather.

Various modifications can be made to the embodiment given by way of example without departing from the scope of the invention, thus the tongue shown in the accompanying drawing, as a molding with the shoe body can as well be reported by any suitable means.

    CLAIMS.

1 - Brake pad for bicycles and other applications, characterized in that it comprises a body of usual shape and is provided at its rear part with a flexible tongue, serving as a scraper for wiping the rim of the wheel during braking by rainy weather.
