<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF A PRODUCT FOR CARBURATION AND REFINING
STEEL AND SIMILAR BATHS.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a product for carburizing and refining steel baths and the like.
The steel industry requires the use of suitable products which, added to the steel baths, are capable of giving them the desired carburizing and refining so as to obtain the limitation of the melting and of the refining means employed.
The object of the invention is to manufacture a product of the type specified, which, in addition to its fuel action, simultaneously exerts a refining action, so that it can be used as an adjunct to the load or as a corrective of the charges. steel baths in Martin-Siemens Ovens and in Electric Ovens.
In particular, the invention aims to obtain a product which, introduced into the melting furnace, gradually releases the coal and limestone (lime) contained therein, and performs a refining action such that the carburization takes place in the most intimate way in the entire mass of the bath.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the liquid iron, or other similar material, is poured onto at least one layer of coal and / or limestone (lime) mixed 1-'one to 1-'other, and that said prepared materials are incorporated into the cast iron.
Advantageously, for this purpose, steel or cast iron residues from the ladle obtained at the end of ingoting will be used.
The product produced at the end of the process is characterized in that it consists of a ferrous material and coal or coal and limestone mixed together; preferably coke.
According to the invention, the proportions of the product, consisting of carbon and limestone, can vary without limit with respect to the metal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention will moreover be better understood with the aid of the application example given below as an indication and in no way limiting the invention and its scope.
In an ingot mold or in a shell we have coal and limestone or only one or the other of these materials.
The mold prepared in this way will be directly filled with liquid iron- (or similar material).
In this way, a perfect incorporation of the carbon and limestone into the mass of liquid metal will be obtained.
After the metal has solidified, the ingot will be demolded.
The incorporation of the carbon into the metal takes place gradually and the result is that the carbon content of the molten steel is considerably high.
The material obtained can be used for any common use.
This material can be used at the load of a Martin-Siemens Furnace or an Electric Furnace, thereby reducing the amount of cast iron normally required. It should be noted that, apart from the saving in cast iron, a strong reduction in the manganese essential for the refining of the bath is achieved.
The possibility of mixing the residues of graphite electrodes with the coking carbon, or of adding to them carbon powder enclosed in protective envelopes and agglomerates of carbon or of tar.
In practice, the application and production details can always vary without departing from the scope of the invention and departing from the scope of the present patent.
