à surmonté tjhme"Partie tarmrlee i.

SPARK PLUG FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES.
The present invention relates generally to spark plugs used in internal combustion engines to cause the explosion of the mass of gas compressed in the combustion chamber of the cylinder.
These spark plugs, mounted on the cylinder head of the engine, generally include electrodes between which the ignition spark emerges, which protrude inside the combustion chamber towards the upper part thereof. These electrodes can easily get dirty and their spacing must be precisely adjusted. In addition, they cause the gases in the upper part of the chamber to explode, and this combustion must then propagate into the rest of the compressed mass of gas.
One of the aims of the invention is to remedy these drawbacks by allowing the production of an ignition plug which eliminates the fouling of the electrodes, facilitating the starting of the engine and its resumptions, providing the desired overpower, avoiding knocking at reduced speeds in direct drive, and being able to withstand a high ignition advance.
Another object of the invention is furthermore to allow the production of an ignition plug in which the ignition is transmitted simultaneously to all the gas mass compressed in the engine cylinder.
The invention is consequently embodied in a spark plug of the type considered, characterized in that it comprises a conical explosion chamber provided in the base of the spark plug and towards the upper part of which are housed. the ignition electrodes, this chamber communicating by a throttle with an advantageously conical diffuser opening inside the cylinder, so that the combustible gaseous mixture is compressed in this explosion chamber of the spark plug and ignited, the gases then bursting into the whole mass

gas from the cylinder causing it to ignite simultaneously.
The description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawing given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it possible to better understand the invention.
In this drawing: fig. - 1 - is an elevational view of the candle. the fig - 2 - is a vertical section taken along the line - bb - the fig - 3 - is a plan view the fig - 4 - is a section taken along the line - aa -
Referring to the drawing, the spark plug, object of the invention, comprises a base 1., preferably having a hexagonal section, and provided at its lower part with a threaded portion of circular section 2 screwed. in the cylinder head 3. of the engine to allow fitting of this spark plug. The base the presents towards its upper part an annular shoulder

The shoulder L serves as a support for receiving a base provided on a porcelain electrode-holder element 7 traversed in its entire length and along its axis by the central electrode 8, which protrudes out of the way. the head .2 of the electrode holder element. This central electrode terminates at the top with a current-taking terminal 10. The electrode-holder element 7 is kept applied to the shoulder 6 by a mounting nut 11 screwed into the threaded part and being presented under the in the form of a sleeve threaded on the outside and surrounding said element.
The base 1 of the spark plug is hollow and forms an axial explosion chamber 12 of frustoconical shape, the largest base of which is directed towards the tip of the electrode 8, and a lower conical diffuser 13 communicating with the chamber of the spark plug. cylinder, towards which is directed its larger base, so that the chamber 12 and the diffuser 13 communicate by a throttle 14 and form a Venturi.
Towards the upper part of the explosion chamber 12 are housed the ground electrodes 15 of the spark plug, of which there are three in the embodiment shown, these electrodes being 120 apart from each other and two. of them being visible in the figure. These electrodes terminate in a tip directed towards the central electrode and are screwed at 16 into the base of the spark plug, where they are then soldered to improve contact. With such an arrangement, the center electrode may be of circular or triangular section. In the latter case, the edges of this electrode will then be directed towards the tips of the ground electrodes 15.
The operating mode of this candle is as follows:
During the compression of the combustible gas mixture inside the cylinder, this gas mixture also enters the diffuser 13 and the explosion chamber 12, in which then a pressure equal to that of the cylinder reigns. The spark produced between the central electrode and the ground electrodes 15 causes the ignition of the gas mixture inside this chamber 12 for a first time. A considerable pressure then develops in this chamber 12, and the gases are thrown violently, through the constriction 14 and the conical diffuser 13, into the interior of the cylinder as indicated by the arrows 17.
These burning gases thus penetrate directly into the entire compressed gaseous mass of the cylinder chamber and cause its total and simultaneous ignition in a second step.
This results in faster and more complete combustion of the compressed gas mixture in this cylinder. This simultaneous ignition of all the gas mass suppresses the knocking and supports a greater ignition advance. It also gives the engine more power and much better pickup.
It will easily be understood that the shape and dimensions of the conical chambers 12 and 13 will depend on the characteristics of the engine, the e-

The gap between the tips of the ground electrodes 15 also being studied, depending on the case.
It goes without saying that, without departing from the scope of the invention, it is possible to make modifications to the embodiment which has just been described. Thus, for example, the spark plug considered will allow the conversion of current engines into direct injection engines by adapting the injector to the explosion chamber 12 of the spark plug, slightly below the electrodes of the spark plug. mass.
Summary.
1.
