PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX COMPRESSEURS.
On connaît les compresseurs à pistons opposés travaillant dans un bloc-cylindre tournant autour d'un axe perpendiculaire à l'axe du cy- lindre et entraînée durant le temps d'aller, par une rampe courbe prévue autour du bloc-cylindre; cette rampe coopère avec des saillies d'extrémité des pistonso Dans ces compresseurs, les pistons peuvent opérer exactement en contrephase ce qui assure un complet équilibrage des forces de masse et, par voie de conséquence un fonctionnement sans chocs ni vibrations;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La présente invention a pour objet des perfectionnements aux compres- seurs du genre précité, réunissant les avantages de ces appareils tout en éliminant les inconvénients, A cet effet, la construction selon l'inven- tion consiste dans la combinaison (précisée ci-dessous), d'éléments cons- tructifs connus en soi :pistons travaillant par deux dans une chambre cy- lindrique traversante commune; - pistons entraînés en contrephase par des excentriques fixes, directement opposés, et montés sur l'axe de rotation avec des tiges excentrées reliées aux extrémités externes des pistons;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

COMPRESSOR IMPROVEMENTS.
Opposed piston compressors are known working in a cylinder block rotating around an axis perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder and driven during the going time, by a curved ramp provided around the cylinder block; this ramp cooperates with end projections of the pistonso In these compressors, the pistons can operate exactly in counterphase which ensures complete balancing of the mass forces and, consequently, operation without shocks or vibrations;
on the other hand, their construction suffers from serious drawbacks. For example, the establishment of the curved ramp is expensive and difficult, and there is a considerable decrease in efficiency, due to friction during the work, because that the friction between the externally projecting piston ends and the corzrbe ramp acts with a long moment. Finally, it may happen that a piston, slowed down in its movement by an accidental obstacle, such as impurities or a slight contraction of the cylinder, is retained in its forward position, which gives rise to strong vibrations of the. lack of balance.
Compressors of this type are also known in which the pistons, instead of being driven by a curved ramp provided around the cylinder block, are connected to an eccentric device provided around the axis of rotation, for example in such a way that all pistons must turn in an almost circular path, eccentric to the axis of rotation.
This nevertheless requires that each piston work in a separate cylinder, - hence the space, this total nuisance becomes greater than in the case of pistons opposed in pairs and working in a common cylinder; in addition there will no longer be this automatic and complete balancing of mass forces achieved by the pistons working exactly face to face.
In addition, the entire effective stroke must be ensured by a single eccentric, the diameter of which must therefore be large enough for its plate to occupy a suitable position with respect to the axis of rotation; this entails an important and unnecessary loss of energy, due to friction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
These eccentrically driven reciprocating compressors are also known in devices comprising two directly opposed eccentric systems, forcing the pistons to work in counterphase; but these known constructions fail in other respects. For example, the eccentric plates are very large, and each piston works in a separate cylinder, while at the same time the construction requires the The use of a less advantageous valve device for controlling the admission and expulsion of the motive agent.
The object of the present invention is to improve the compressors of the aforementioned type, combining the advantages of these devices while eliminating the drawbacks. To this end, the construction according to the invention consists of the combination (specified below) , structural elements known per se: pistons working in pairs in a common through cylindrical chamber; - pistons driven in counterphase by fixed eccentrics, directly opposite, and mounted on the axis of rotation with eccentric rods connected to the outer ends of the pistons;
- slide mechanism for controlling the admission and discharge of the driving agent, consisting of a pipe opening onto a lateral face of the cylinder block at a certain distance from the axis of rotation, and cooperating with a annular drawer provided perpendicular to the axis of rotation,
This combination makes it possible to constitute a compressor whose pistons are opposed in the literal sense of the term, and driven by a motor mechanism with the minimum of friction losses, and a complete automatic balancing of the mass forces, while the spool mechanism is extremely easy to manufacture and assemble, further requiring no increase in the diameter of the cylinder block or eccentric plates.
The compressor can therefore have the smallest dimensions for a given effect; contributes to give it, according to its design, a working capacity at high angular speed, with a minimum of friction losses. There is no risk of irregularities in the operation due to wear of the slide mechanism or defect in the movement of a piston; the construction is simple and robust.
The invention is shown in the drawings opposite, where one sees FIG. 1, the longitudinal section, in part diagrammatic, along line I-I of FIG. 2, of an embodiment of a compressor according to the invention; Fig. 2, section, diagrammatically likewise, along line II-II of FIG. 1.
In the drawings, the compressor housing 1 can be seen, closed at its upper part by a cover 2 provided with a stuffing box (not shown) for the motor shaft of the cylinder block. Instead of equipping the compressor with a stuffing box, it can also be built together with a closed electric motor, so as to constitute a hermetically sealed machine. The cylinder block 4 proper is one with the motor shaft 3, and extends transversely to the latter and to its extension 6. The motor shaft and its extension are respectively mounted in sleeves 5 inserted in the cover, 2 and in a diaphragm 7 mounted in the housing.
The extension 6 goes down to the lower part 8 of the casing, where it drives a lubricating oil pump 17, distributing the lubricant to the various moving parts from an oil inlet provided in this lower part of the device.
Each of the sleeves 5 carries two eccentrics 15 and 16, of the same eccentricity with respect to the axis of rotation, and offset with respect to one another by 180, so that together, the four eccentric plates form two directly opposite eccentrics
These plates, in usual practice, are enveloped by eccentric collars which, by means of eccentric bars 20 and 21, are respectively connected to transverse rods 22 mounted on the outer ends of a pair of pistons. opposites 18 and 19 working in a common cylindrical chamber. These transverse rods 22 move,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
with suitable clearance, in slots 23 provided in the outer ends of the cylinder.
From the middle of the cylinder chamber, starts an oblique borehole 30 serving for the admission and evacuation of the motive agent, and opening, on the lower side of the cylinder block, in a face of a slide surrounding the extension 6 and cooperating with the upper surface, profiled in front of the drawer, of the lower sleeve 5. In this last part, either by grinding or in any other suitable way, a suction chamber has been provided 9 and a compression chamber 10 communicating respectively with the suction pipe 11 of the compressor, and its compression pipe 12.
From the middle part of the cylinder chamber, furthermore leaves a borehole 25 leading to the interior of the casing, and the exterior opening of which constitutes a seat for a valve 24 mounted on one side of a square frame 26. two other sides of this square are guided in openings made in the cylinder block and are able to move freely in slots 30 made in the pistons. Opposite the valve 24, the frame carries a mass 28 and, between the cylinder block and the frame, springs 27 are inserted which tend to keep the valve 24 open.
Against the latter, load members 29 are mounted on the cylinder block, and adjusted so that the unit consisting of the cylinder block, valve, frame, springs and mass, is balanced around the axis of rotation when valve 24 is closed.
The operation of the compressor described, emerges directly from the examination of the figures when the cylinder block rotates in the direction of the arrow in Figure 2, from the position shown, the pistons 18 and 19 approach one of the other, and compress the working fluid, which exhausts through the pressure line 12 as the orifice of the opening 31 slides through the compression chamber 10. The pistons are suitably adjusted to fit. approach each other as close as the mechanical easements allow, which minimizes the harmful space, which no longer corresponds, in fact, to the opening 31 itself. As the rotation continues, the pistons are drawn back outward, while the orifice of the borehole 31 slides through the suction chamber 9, so that a new charge is drawn into the cylinder.
The valve 24 is kept closed by the centrifugal force acting on the mass 28, and the entire moving system is completely balanced, both statically and dynamically.
It is only during rest and departure that the springs 27 are strong enough to hold the valve 24 open so that no compression can occur in the cylinder. The start is thus facilitated, and as soon as the cylinder block has acquired a certain speed of rotation, the centrifugal force acting on the rotating mass 28, will exceed the force of the springs 27 and will close the valve 24, so that the compressor will be able to start working, at the same time as full balancing is established.
The invention is not limited to the apparatus described above.
In the same compressor, several cylinder chambers can be provided, placed for example successively in the direction of the axis of rotation, and working with a suitable relative displacement phase, or with a certain offset. The useful space does not need to be distributed symmetrically around the axis of rotation of the cylinder block, but can be moved to one side or the other in the direction of the axis of the chamber cylinder. The pistons, with their corresponding exits, do not need to have the same mass or the same stroke. The essential thing is that the mass and stroke of the associated pistons be chosen so that the mass forces substantially outwardly balance each other.
The invention can be applied to compressors of very different dimensions and power, and for different working fluids.
It is particularly suitable for small and medium size, high speed, fully enclosed compressors used in refrigerators.
