<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

BOOTS AND SHOES AND THEIR MANUFACTURING PROCESS.-
The present invention relates to boots and shoes and their manufacturing method.
Although the invention is primarily intended for luxury shoes for women, it is by no means limited to this application. Accordingly, for simplicity, the term "shoe" will be taken in its general sense in the description so as to denote all kinds of suitable shoes to which the invention can be applied advantageously.
The object of the invention is to improve a shoe of the welt type, that is to say a shoe formed, comprising a welt and whose upper, welt and insole are joined by a seam. common.
The improved shoe which is the object of the invention is characterized in that the welt, instead of projecting laterally and in a straight line out of the lower part of the shoe, goes upwards and is fixed. on the lower vertical portion of the upper, so as to form a sort of band around the shoe simulating a so-called "platform" sole.
The welt preferably runs vertically upward and at or near right angles to the outer sole of the shoe. Consequently, the welt facing upwards in a way forms a basin which delimits a cavity in which the upper is housed.
The depth of the cavity can be increased by correspondingly increasing the height of the welt or vice versa.
The welt directed upwards preferably extends all around the upper, so as to present the shape of a so-called "platform" sole, thus giving the finished shoe the appearance of a shoe of the so-called "type" platform ". However, according to the invention, the directed welt
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
upwards may only extend over a portion of the shoe, for example only around the anterior portion, and in this case the instep portion and the heel-accommodating portion are made as ha - bitude on form.
The welt is preferably covered by a "band" or "platform" cover. An important feature of the invention in this connection is that the band or "platform" cover has the shape of a flap, one of the edges of which is fixed between the vamp and the welt, which folds over the welt so as to enclose it, and the other edge of which, previously free, is folded inwards and is fixed either under the insole or under a sole applied to it.
In accordance with a suitable embodiment of the invention, the appropriate portion of the edge of the flap is secured between the upper and the welt by the common seam which serves to join the upper, the welt, and the insole.
The invention is easy to understand and to apply in practice from the special embodiment described hereinafter with the accompanying drawings, on which the pin 1 is a side elevation of the lower portion of a shoe according to the invention, the pin 2 is a longitudinal section of this shoe, the pin 3 is a cross section along the line III-III of FIG. 2, fig 4 is a detail section on a larger scale of the portion of fig.
3 surrounded by a circumference A, pin 5 is a detailed perspective view of a portion of the separate vertical welt and pin 6 is a partial perspective view with partial cut in which the stitched seam can be clearly seen. chain which brings together the upper, the vertical welt and the insole as well as the method of application of the band covering the welt.
The same elements are designated by the same references in all the figures.
The shoe shown in the drawings is made according to the principle of Goodyear's welt shoes, i.e. the comb 1, a welt 2 and an insole 3 are joined together by a seam as horizontal 4 chain stitches. The inner sole is notched at its lower surface along its periphery and its shape is chosen so as to form a seam tab 5 projecting downwards and through which the chain stitch seam 4 passes.
Note, however, in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 6 that the peripheral edge of the insole is trimmed and flush with the outer surface of the seam tongue 5 and that the lower edge la of the comb 1 is vertical and rests against this tab instead of flapping in first below a horizontal ledge running laterally out from the seam tab, as in ordinary Goodyear welt shoes. According to the characteristic of the invention, the welt 2 is vertical or substantially vertical, and, as a result, points upwards at a right angle or approximately relative to the outer sole 6 of the shoe.
The band of the welt itself 2 has the shape shown in FIG. 5, that is to say that it is of rectangular general section, but has an upper edge 2a in the form of a bevel and slightly curved.
The outer surface of the welt strip 2 has a longitudinal groove 7 at or near its upper and lower edges, so as to accommodate the stitches of the chainstitch seam 4.
Consequently, instead of passing the stitches of the seam through a welt-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The point is horizontal near its inner edge as in a normal Goodyear welt shoe, these points pass higher in the welt.
The vertical welt 2 of the example chosen completely surrounds the upper 1 so as to give it the appearance of a so-called "platform" sole. In addition, it is covered by a band or "platform" cover,., Which forms a flap 8 whose edge 8a is interposed between the contiguous portion 1a of the upper and the vertical welt 2, the flap 8 folding over -The welt so as to enclose it and the anteriorly free edge 8b of the flap being folded in and fixed by glue below a relatively thin layer or liner 9 of canvas or similar material interposed between the insole 3 and outsole 6.
The portion 8a of the flap 8 is obviously fixed by the chain stitch seam 4 Before the flap 8 is folded over the welt 2 and folded down to cover it, the stitches of the seam 4 are visible on the outside of the vertical welt 2, pin 6. The cavity c formed by the contours of the seam tab 5 on the insole 3 has a filling 10 at the bottom.
If, as may happen, the diaper or liner is removed
9, the folded-down portion 8b of the flap 8 can be fixed by glue directly on the lower edge of the vertical welt 2, the lower edge of the seam tongue 5 and on the lower surface of the filling of the bottom 10 Or else an intermediate or continuous sole can be incorporated into the shoe and in this case the portion folded inside 8b of the flap 8 can be glued below this sole.
The outer sole 6, which can be made of leather or crepe rubber, is preferably glued.
If desired, as shown in figure 2, the shoe can include a heel pad such as 11 and in this case the posterior portion
8c of the flap 8 is a little wider or deeper than the rest of the flap so that when folded it surrounds and covers the ribs of the heel 11 before being folded in below this heel.
In addition, the flap 8 may be in two or more overlapping portions, joined between two overlapping portions is designated by 12 in Fig l,
The material which constitutes the flap may be the same as that of the upper 1, or match, harmonize or contrast from the point of view of color and / or nature with the upper. In all cases, the vertical toe 2 which gives the shoe the appearance of a "platform" serves to fill the band or cover, by bringing out the protruding shape and giving it the appearance of a flange directed vertically upwards from the outer sole 6 on the outside of the upper 1.
This rim forms a bowl which delimits a cavity in which the upper is placed.
On rod 2, an attached toe, buttress and a plantar reinforcement are designated respectively by 13, 14 and 15 The shoe of the example shown is completed by the application on the outer sole 6 of a heel in one. single thickness 16.
A feature of the invention consists of a method of manufacturing a welt-type shoe which comprises forming an upper on an insole, joining a vertical welt, the upper and the insole with the lump. a band placed first the wrong side out, by a common seam, which is introduced between the upper and lower edges of the welt, which is subsequently attached to the lower vertical portion of the upper, the flap band being interposed between these elements, then to fold the flap by inverting it so as to enclose the welt, then to fold the flap inwards and to fix it in the lower part of the shoe.
