<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
REVENDICATIONS.

IMPROVEMENTS TO THE VISES.
The present invention relates to screw vices of the type which have a fixed jaw and a movable jaw sliding in guides to move towards and away from the fixed jaw.
The object of the invention is to present a vice of the species mentioned, which is of simple construction, easy handling and efficient operation.
The invention is generally characterized by the fact that between a slide which slides in the guides and moves with the movable jaw and a surface parallel to the guides of the movable jaw is inserted a coupling member. wedge-shaped, the thinner end of which is directed towards the movable jaw, and by the fact that a device is provided, which is intended to force the movable jaw and said slide to move closer or further away l 'from each other.
In this vice, the movable jaw can be made to slide freely to bring it into contact with the part placed between the jaws and, when the sliding jaw and the slide slide are forced in directions which move them away from the jaw. one from the other, the coupling member prevents the slide from moving backwards, so that the part is clamped.
An embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing where: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a vice constructed according to the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view thereof, and Figure 3 is an end view showing the vise from behind.

In the drawing, 1 indicates a base plate having holes 2, for bolts (not shown) intended to allow the fixing of the plate to a bench on which the vice is to be mounted. Two parallel guide bars 3 and 4, having a U-shaped cross section, spaced apart from each other, are fixed, by means such as soldering, to the upper surface of the base plate. At one end of said guide bars is fixed a transverse part 7, forming the fixed jaw of the vice.
The other jaw 8 of the vice is fixed to one end of a left-hand threaded screw sleeve 9, which is fixed, by an intermediate piece 10, to a slide 11, which slides in the U-shaped channels of the bars. guide 3 and 4 and along them. On the side of the slide 11 remote from the transverse part 7, there is another slide, which slides in the guide bars 3 and 4 and along them, said other slide comprising a screw sleeve 12. threaded on the right, coaxial with the sleeve 9, an intermediate piece 13 projecting downwards between the upper edges 6 of the respective guide bars 3, 4 and a slide 14, which the said edges embrace and whose bottom is formed by an inclined surface 15.
Between this surface and the surfaces 16 of the lower edges 5 of the guide bars 3 and 4 is inserted a wedge-shaped coupling member 17, the thinner end of which is directed towards the bottom. slide 11 and which comprises, at its lower surface coming into contact with said surfaces 16 of the channels, a series of transverse grooves 18. The coupling member 17 is subjected to the action of a leaf spring 20, fixed to the slide 14 by means of screws 19, and arranged so as to maintain, with sufficient force, the coupling member 17 embedded between the surface 15 of the slide 14 and the surfaces 16 of the channels.
In the space 21 existing between the screw sleeves 9 and 12 is the middle part of a screw shank 23 having a suitable handle 22. The end parts 24, 25 of said screws are introduced respectively into the sleeves 9 and 12, one of said end parts being threaded on the left and the other on the right, so that the rotation of the screw 23, by means of the handle 22, in one direction or the other, brings about the approximation or the distance from each other of the screw sleeves 9 and 12 and the elements which are connected to them.
The vice described operates as follows.
When a part is to be clamped, the screw sleeves 9 and 12 and the elements which are connected to them are slid as a block towards the fixed jaw 7, the coupling member 17 allowing this sliding movement due to the fact that it offers only a slight frictional resistance under the action of the spring 20.
In this way, the workpiece is pre-grasped between the jaws 7, 8, after which, when the handle 22, and therefore the screw 23, is partially turned clockwise (in accordance with in FIG. 3), the screw sleeves 9, 12 are moved so as to move away from one another. Since the coupling member 17 prevents the screw sleeve 12 from retreating, the jaw 8 is effectively pushed in the direction of the jaw 7, so that the workpiece is firmly clamped. When the part needs to be released, just turn the screw shank in the opposite direction.
If the screw sleeves are to be moved away from the jaw 7, the handle 22 and, together with it, the screw 23 are rotated in an anti-clockwise direction (as shown in figure 3) until that the slide 11 comes into contact with the thinner end of the coupling member 17 and causes said member to slide against the action of the spring 20, whereby the locking by friction between the coupling member and the sliding surfaces 16. the sliding ceases and the desired rearward movement of the screw sleeves can be freely performed.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described and illustrated in the drawing, but it can be modified in detail, without departing from its spirit. For example, the coupling member should not slide along the sliding surfaces 16 of the rods.

guide 3, 4 but a special sliding surface can be provided for the coupling member. In addition, the screw rod 23 can be replaced by another member (for example, by an eccentric) for the separation of the movable jaw and slide 14 associated with the coupling member.
