<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Mechanical pencil with compass.
The object of the present invention is formed by a mechanical pencil whose construction is such that, thanks to a simple manipulation, it can be used as a compass. The new construction has the advantage that, as regards its dimensions, it does not differ from a normal mechanical pencil, all the parts constituting the compass being foldable so as not to present any protruding end which could prejudice the use of the mechanical pencil.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of a hexagonal mechanical pencil in combination with a

compass, according to which part of the mechanical pencil can be taken out and has a cavity inside which serves as a housing for the compass.
Fig. 1 shows the object of the invention in the closed state, while Figure 2 shows it in the open position with a branch partially in section. Figure 3 is a partial view turned from 90 to Figure 1. Figures 4, 5 and 6, are sections through I-I, II-II, and III-III on a scale of 1: 2.5.
Fig. 7 is a section through IV-IV in the anchored position, while Fig. 8 shows us the same section with the compass point in the unanchored position, and Fig. 9 is a section through V-V. All these sections are shown in the same enlarged 1: 2.5 ratio.
The operation of the mechanical pencil is as follows:
The extendable branch of the mechanical pencil a can rotate around the axis b. The angle between the mechanical pencil and the predicted branch is adjustable at will, as the ± and d parts of the hinge are constructed in combination with the axes of the screws b in such a way that friction has just occurred sufficient suitable for securing. As soon as the branch µ¯ has emerged, the point of the compass is released from its anchoring position (fig. 7) and pushed out by a spring e, after which it can be re-anchored in its new position. the position following the introduction of the anchor screw f - serving to fix the point of the compass ± - in the groove provided for this purpose.
The movement of the compass point ± takes place in the guide groove i (fig. 8).
It goes without saying that the mode in which the anchor point of the compass is anchored may include several variants, so for example it is possible to provide at the upper end of this point, an adjustment spring which can enter a hole as soon as the sought position has been reached. Instead of making the tip of the compass retractable in the branch of the

mechanical pencil, one can provide a variant according to which the said point of the compass results arranged in a folding manner around a hinge at the end of the branch, so that it finds its housing in a cavity formed on the inner side of the branch itself.
