<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"AUTOMATIC SPEED CHANGE".
The object of the present improvement patent to the main patent recalled above relates to an improved realization of the automatic gear change applicable not only to bicycles, but to any other machine in which inside each of the grooves of the driven and driven pulleys formed by two rings or flanges of desired dimensions, of annular shape, with an internal radial face cone, disposed elastically in the longitudinal direction towards each other and in an adjustable manner, on either side of the hub or of the rim of the pulley of each of the driving and driven shafts, a ring or ring of trapezoidal cross section is arranged with radial faces of the same taper as those of the flanges or crowns of the driving and driven pulleys,
between which it is engaged on the outer periphery of which ring or ring shaped accordingly, engages

then the endless connecting member between said rings or rings considered, such as a chain, a trapezoidal belt, or other of determined length.
The displacement of the flanges or cheeks or crowns of the driving and driven pulleys is obtained by means of an elastic device which, as already indicated above will include springs, which also could be constituted by a hydraulic device, or even pneumatic, or other suitable devices. .
The rings or rings selected by the connecting member may also be made of one and the same material or of different ones.
In order to bring out the above description more clearly, FIG. 1 represents schematically, for explanatory and non-limiting purposes, an elevational view with partial sections in such a change of speed and FIG. 2 a section along AB, FIG. .I.
Fig.3 shows a cross section in a ring or ring in an alternative embodiment.
Fig.4 shows a cross section in a ring or ring made of two different materials.
Referring to fig.I and 2, 20 shows the shaft of the driven pulley constituted by two flanges 27 and 28 of which 37 and 38 represent the inner faces of the cones. These flanges 27 and 28 are elastically engaged on the ends of the bolts 32 by means of springs 33 and held by the bolts 24. The bolts 32 are arranged transversely in the longitudinal direction on the hub 22 wedged on the shaft 20. Between the flanges 27 and 28 is engaged the connecting member 5 consisting of a trapezoidal section ring or ring with conical side faces 47 respectively 48.
The outer periphery of the ring or ring 5 is in the example considered, provided with a toothing 26 on which is engaged the connecting member consisting of an endless chain 29 engaged on the other hand on the toothed ring 26 'of the ring or ring 5 ', of the same or of ditterent conicity to that of the ring 5 engages, between the flanges 30 and 31 of the pulley
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
drive comprising a drive shaft 31 and a hub 23 conditioned in the same way as for the driven pulley with elastic device comprising bolts 35, springs 36 and tightening nuts 34. The conicalities of the inner radial faces 5? ' and 38 'will be those of the 5' ring.
In FIG. 3, by way of example, there is shown a cross section of a ring 5 '' comprising at its periphery no longer a toothing, but a groove 39 into which is inserted the connecting member * formed then ', by a trapezoidal section belt. dale.
Finally in fig.4, there is shown a section in a ring or ring formed of two materials of different nature is a metal core 40 with teeth 26 and rings 41 for example fiber fixed on the core 40 by any appropriate means. - requested.
The operation takes place as described in the main patent recalled above and depending on the force to be transmitted to the driven shaft 20, its speed will be greater or less with regard to the value of the eccentric displacement of the ring. 5, and conversely to that of the ring 5 'of the driving pulley driven by the shaft 31.
The elastic device may even be constituted by parts of elastic material made of rubber or other equivalent material.
Since the speed change in question is not subject to any adjustment, it is possible to ensure a long running time and achieve on the driven shaft speeds proportional to the resistive force and this automatically. Its application is thus very suitable for mechanical vehicles of all kinds, machine tools or others where the starting force reaches a certain value.
In summary, it should be considered as coming within the scope of the present patent, an automatic gear change
