<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
REVENDICATIONS.-

"Manufacturing process of! Wooden barrels and barrels as well as staves and castings produced according to this process".
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of staves and bottoms for kegs intended to contain beer or the like.
The drawbacks of wooden barrels used in this technique have long been known. The drums must always be filled with liquid so that the wood remains swollen and thus produces sufficient tightening of the metal hoops which hold the staves. Moreover, the barrel, even thick, is subject to deterioration during the continual handling to which it is the object. When a stave has to be replaced, a certain difficulty arises due to the fact that the staves obtained by the ordinary process are never identical to one another: the gauging of the barrel is changed, which imposes corrections on the capacity evaluations.
In another vein, it has been noted that the wooden barrel is very sensitive to the formation of germs and bacteria, these starting from the inside thanks to the irregularities existing on the internal surface of the barrel and the porosity of the wood. To combat this inconvenience, we are required to stick the barrel.
These and other constraints force breweries to provide costly maintenance and cooperage services.
All these drawbacks have been eliminated by the present invention which further provides characteristic advantages particularly suitable for kegs for beer: and the like.
According to this invention, the staves and bottoms are obtained by hot molding and under high pressure of wood sheets in the presence of synthetic resin. This impregnates the sheets and can be arranged in alternating layers. Leaves of the same moat or the same bottom
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
can be of various species of wood, the oak being for example, reserved for the face which will be inside the barrel.
The molding will advantageously take place in the final shapes and dimensions.
However, this does not exclude that in some embodiments the staves receive only after assembly the notches intended for housing the edge of the funds.
Beside the manufacturing advantages resulting from. the application in this field of sheets of wood molded under pressure with resin, and of the constancy of the gauging, it is appropriate to retain the active part of the invention various particular effects.
This is how, thanks to its high insulating power, the laminated wood with resin impregnation protects the beer from temperature variations.
Furthermore, experience shows that in the barrels according to the invention the bouquet of the beer is surprisingly maintained.
The lightness of the drums means that the ratio between payload and tare is considerably increased.
According to one embodiment of the invention, sheets of selected wood, impregnated with synthetic resin are placed in the mold, which are subjected to high pressure and to the temperature necessary for the polymerization of the resin.
The moats coming out of the molds carry to their part. upper and lower grooves in which, when they are assembled, rubber treads will be forced out, the application of which constitutes an important feature of the present invention.
In addition, the staves and bottoms come out of the mold, covered with a layer of polymerized resin, which, while
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
giving no taste to the contents of the barrel, protects the inside of it against all chemical or bacteriological attacks.
It is obvious that the invention is not limited exclusively to the forms of production described and that many modifications can be made, in the form, the arrangement and the constitution of some of the elements involved in its realization, provided that these The modifications do not conflict with any of the following claims.
