<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Method of manufacturing a gearbox".
In. bicycles it is known to use socket connectors in order to assemble the various tubes made up the frame and the forks. In particular, the connector known by the name of the gearbox constitutes the housing for the crank axle and comprises bushings for assembling the tubes of the frame and of the rear fork. This lighter box is usually made of malleable iron, cast in sand molds, either by hand or by machine.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a gearbox from a. steel tube.
The method forming the subject of the invention consists in principle in splitting a steel tube into sections, in drilling holes in the sections at the places where the tubes to be assembled must be fixed, in stamping the litter surrounding each hole and finally stretching the stamped material.
In steel tubes with a diameter equal to the diameter of the gearbox, sections of length equal to the length of the box are cut; according to a characteristic, we drill into
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
these sections, at the points where the tubes fit, holes in the form of ellipses whose axes are parallel to the axis of the box.
The material surrounding each hole is then hot-stamped using a mandrel provided with a bulge; the blister thus formed is housed in a die and a steel ball is forced through the blister so as to stretch the stamped material.
Other features may appear from the following description of the process according to the invention.
In a steel tube of suitable diameter and thickness sections are cut having the length of the box and in which we spare, at the points where the tubes to be assembled must fit, holes having the shape of ellipses whose the major axes are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the box.
The red-heated section of tube is clamped in a clamp and is introduced on a mandrel provided with a bulge so that the latter comes into contact with the material surrounding the hole.
The mandrel is held stationary and the tube section is moved, by a press stroke, relative to the mandrel, which has the effect of stamping the material which thus follows the shape of the bulge of the mandrel. This stamping operation is repeated for each hole.
The tube 3st then carried on a die provided with a cylindrical cavity of diameter equal to the -external diameter of the assembly sleeve to be formed. The blister is lodged in this cavity; a ball of diameter equal to the internal diameter of the sleeve to be formed is slipped into the blister and covered with a mandrel which is pressed so as to. force the ball into the blister. The material stretches and sticks together along the cylindrical surface of the die cavity, thus forming the sleeve.
A second ball can

be used to expel the first. The same drawing operation is repeated so as to constitute the other assembly sleeves which are finally cut to the desired length.
