<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

fi PEP..FECTIOnITE, THE RELATED TO THE EXTRUSIOM OF METALS by:
EMI1.2
cneie1Jr Ernest MITCHELL of Lotetto, Rocky Lane, Mont on Greer; Schools, Manchester, ENGLAND.
The present invention relates to the extrusion of metals, such as, for example, magnesium or magnesium alloys. and has for object the manufacture by'extrusion, of objects for @ us of a central boss and radial arms, such as the propellers of planes, which had not yet been manufactured until now by such a process . The invention relates more particularly to the known method, according to which the metal is subjected to the extrusion in a direction lateral to the direction of the pressure, producing the extrusion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention consists of the manufacture by extrusion of metal, of articles comprising a central boss and radial arms, the metal being introduced by force into a pair of similar dies or mold parts which, after assembly , have a central opening for the packages. boss and radial or lateral openings such that metal can flow or be extruded therein from the central opening to the outside of the mold.
The invention is particularly applicable in the manufacture of propellers for aircraft or the like, or other articles, also provided with a central boss with blades, arms or projections radiating or projecting from the boss.
In this application, the metal or alloy, brought to the required temperature, is driven by a hydraulic piston, or in any other suitable way, out of a container in a mold placed at the end of such a container or cylinder.
Said mold consists of a pair of similar dies or mold parts which after assembly have a central opening for the fore-dation of the boss of the propeller or other article, and radial or side openings such that the metal can flow. or be extruded therein from the central opening to the outside of the mold.
Are the shapes or sections of said side openings such that they give the required shape to the blades or the like of the propeller or other article projecting from its central boss?
The charge of the metal forced out of the cylinder or container in said mold is sufficient to produce the boss of the article as well as to form by casting or extrusion of the metal through said side openings, the blades or the radiating or projecting arms , up to the desired dimensions.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
By way of example, the present invention is described below with reference to the appended schematic drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation view and
Fig. 2 shows a sectional side view showing in schematic form a method of manufacturing an aircraft propeller, according to the present invention.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view showing another mode of application of the present invention, in the manufacture for example of the arms or spokes of a wheel, forming an integral part with the central boss of the wheel.
The same reluctance letters indicate the same 'parts in the different drawings.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the four blades or arms of the propeller and the central boss are formed by means of a mold part a provided with a central die b. for the formation of the boss and radiating dies from the center for the formation of the blades or the arms, said 0 Dies having a required cross section, which can vary in these different parts to produce the blades of the desired shape.
The arms can protrude from the outer ends of said dies .2 and be completed subsequently by mechanical operations, or the lengths of the dies .2 can coincide or be greater than the length of the pays' .. The mold is split or divided. in a suitable manner or made in the form of segments to allow its separation to facilitate removal of the propeller.
One end of the container or cylinder d, into which the metal is introduced with a view to its extrusion, ends up against the face of the mold a., As shown in fig. 2. The extrusion pressure applied, by means of a hydraulic cylinder or otherwise, in the direction indicated by arrow 1

In the example illustrated in FIG. 3 showing the fabri.ca- tior those hollow arms or spokes in one piece with the cent? or boss of the wheel, the container or extrusion cylinder d is in two parts with the mold a interposed between them.
Extrusion pressure is applied to each part of the cylinder, as shown by arrows 1, a fixed mandrel or core such as = being disposed in the center of each of the dies c which radiate from the central die b, in order to give the hollow shape of the arms or spokes of the wheel.
