<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
la chaussure.
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>

"Method and machine for assembling shoes and others" ----------------- Conv. Int .: Priority of patent application No. 20,297 filed in the United States of America on April 1948 -----------
The present invention relates to shoe fitting machines of the con @@@@ type.
In the Belgian patent application filed today by the same inventor and entitled '. Method and apparatus for fitting shoes', an apparatus designed to grip the edge of the upper between mechanically actuated rollers while a force is described. lift is applied with the edge folded inwardly over the underside of the boot by reciprocating reels, after an adhesive has been applied to the inner surface of the mounting edge,
by means of a fixed holding device comprising a part on which the mounting edge is bent by the reels
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and which has an outlet for the adhesive. The term "mounting edge" used herein is to be understood to include the part of the upper of an ordinary shoe which is folded down against the insole, or its equivalent, as well as the platform flap or cover. a “California” type shoe, with a platform or force-fitted on a last.
Although the reciprocating reels described in this application give good results, the present invention employs means by which even better results can be obtained, in particular. using, in combination with the above clamp rollers and an adhesive feeder, a rotating reel which continuously applies an inwardly directed force to the mounting edge.
Although very interesting results can be obtained, with regard to the upward pull, by using a pair of tension rollers as indicated above, it is possible to obtain such interesting results using only one reel, in combination with a stopper element, the upward pulling force resulting from the folding of the edge around the stopper under the inaction of the reel. The present invention also relates to an assembly apparatus which can be used in the case of glued shoes, in which the upward pull is obtained, as indicated above, by the combination of a reel and a stopper, a device being intended to apply the adhesive to the inside surface of the edge as the operation proceeds.
The invention also relates to an apparatus for mounting on form by gluing, in which a stopper is combined with
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
reel means for pulling the upper upward, and wherein the adhesive is applied to the inner surface of the mounting edge, the folding operation being continuous and performed by a rotating reel. According to the invention, the stopper provides adhesive to the inside surface of the mounting edge and combines with a roller which contacts the outside surface of that edge to advance the work, the apparatus com - carrying a helical reel actuated mechanically to produce the folding force.

In Figures 1, 2 and 3, we see two parallel shafts 1 and 2, driven in opposite directions and carrying rollers 3 and 4 respectively, at their lower ends. However, and as shown in Figure 2,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the axes of shafts 1 and 2 are inclined downwards and forwards, in the direction of the work advance. As seen in Figure 2, the rollers may be provided with helical ribs 5 intended to grip the work, but these ribs are not essential to the operation.
In order to conveniently introduce the work between the rollers 3 and 4, the shaft 2 can be arranged so that it can be moved away from the shaft 1.
In figure 3, we see an upper
U mounted on an L shape with an S insole.
The upper U has an extension or mounting edge M.
As seen in Figures 1 and 2, the edge M is gripped between the rollers 3 and 4 and, when so gripped, it is subjected to an upwardly directed force, pulling the upper U in the applying on the form. To fold the edge M on the underside of the first S, a reel is provided, rotating constantly, mounted on a driven shaft. 6. The reel comprises a body 7, preferably, but not necessarily, conical, as shown in Figure 1, of circular cross section, and the end of which is fixed to the shaft 6 and coaxially to this shaft. As shown, the shaft 6 is attached to the small end of the reel. The helical reel member, constituted in this example by a rib 8, is carried by the body of the reel.
When the latter rotates in the direction of the arrow (fig. 1), the rib 8 which engages with the edge of the upper (which is vertical or in principle perpendicular to the underside of the first S when it is gripped by the rollers), pushes edge M inward, over the edge of the first, and presses it firmly against the underside of the former.
As shown more particularly in the figures
1 and 3, a retaining device is provided between
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
point where the edge is gripped by the rollers and the point of contact with the reel. This retaining device is carried by a normally fixed tubular support 9 which can be conveniently carried by the same parts as those which carry the bearings of the shaft 2. The support 9 is provided, at its lower end, with a foot. doe 10 with a substantially horizontal flat lower surface 11 (fig. 3) which rests on the lower surface of the first S and which thus limits the lifting of the boot under the action of the traction exerted by the rollers 3 and 4.
The upper surface 12 of the presser foot 10 is inclined and the mounting edge, as seen in Figures 1 and 3, is folded over this surface, under the action of the reel, the foot 10 tapering preferably. - Reference up to an edge 13 which is substantially level with the outer edge of the first S during operation. The foot 10 comprises a duct 14, which communicates with the bore of the tubular support 9 and which terminates in the lower surface 11 of the presser foot, by presenting a branch 14a which opens onto the inclined surface.

ro- ne 12.
A fluid adhesive, coming from a suitable source, arrives, by gravity or by the action of a pump, in the bore of the support 9, flows through the conduit 14 and arrives on the underside of the first S and , also through the orifice 14a, on the inner surface of the edge M. The outlet end of the duct 14 is preferably at a certain distance from the end 13 of the presser foot and the orifice 14a is likewise at a certain distance from the end 13, so that the adhesive supplied to the first and the edge does not spread to the outer edge of the first, but is deposited on it and on the lower surface from edge M in the form of spaced ribbons.
As the application of heat accelerates the setting
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
certain types of glue, it can be provided, a nozzle N (fig. 2) which sends a jet of hot air or a jet of ignited gas against the reel 7 and, preferably, so that part of the hot fluid directly hits the mounting edge just before it is gripped by the reel.
During the operation of the machine, the edge M is gripped between the rollers 3 and 4, as seen in figure 1, and the shoe advances in the direction of the arrow K, the rollers gripping the edge between them and the hand - holding vertical, that is to say in principle perpendicular to the underside of the first S, while the lifting forces stretch the upper and its edge. When the boot advances, the edge that comes out of the rollers is pushed inward under the action of the helical reel 8.
This reel folds the edge M over the inclined upper surface 12 of the presser foot 10 and, when the adhesive exits through the hole 14a, a strip of adhesive is applied to the inner surface of the edge and when the latter slides past it. of presser foot 10, it is clamped on the underside of the first S by the reel and it adheres slidly to this first. During this operation, the first is held in place and cannot be lifted because of its contact with the underside 11 of the foot 10. If desired, the roller 4 can be provided, at its lower end, with a button. screwed retainer 23 coming into contact with the underside of the first S. The above operation can be continued all around the boot or on the desired part or parts of the periphery of the boot.
The reel operates continuously and the point where the folding force is applied is always at the same distance from the point where the edge is gripped between rollers 3 and 4. This
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The mechanism therefore performs an edge lift to coat it with adhesive and fold back, all in one operation, and thus eliminating the need to apply the adhesive in a separate prior operation. Since the reel operates continuously, all points of the edge in the longitudinal runner undergo the drawdown force and, as a result, this edge is applied evenly and firmly to the underside of the boot.
Figs. 4 to 8 represent a variant of the above device. In this variant, there is no gripping action of the rollers 3 and 4 described above and all that is needed is a single roller 18 which bears against the inner surface of the mounting edge, in combination with the reel action, to produce the lifting force.
As seen in Figures 4 and 5, the machine allows the mounting of the flap mounting edge, the platform extension or cover, a shoe of the "California" type, platform or mounted. force, the upper U is mounted on the form L with the insole S 'and the platform sole or cushion P, the flap or mounting edge W being attached to the upper proper by stitching. The single roller 18 is carried by a shaft 2a (fig. 5) mounted in a vertical bearing 15. The shaft 2a can be provided with a tangent wheel 16 at its upper end, or with an equivalent control member. . This tangent wheel is shown in the example envisaged as comprising a sleeve or hub 16a which fits on the shaft 2a and which can be fixed thereto using a retaining via 16b.
The shaft 2a comprises an axial duct 17 and the roller 18 is fixed at its lower end by a retaining screw 19 (FIG. 6) or equivalent member. As
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
shown in Figure 6, the gàlet 18 has, on its periphery, an orifice 20 which communicates by a slot 21 with the duct 17 of the shaft 2a. The lower end of the shaft conduit is closed by a screw cap 22 which forms part of a retaining button 23. The bearing 15 is carried by an arm 24 which forms part of the frame F of the machine and comprises a longitudinal bore 25 communicating with the interior of a flexible pipe 26 through which the adhesive arrives. The bore 25 communicates with the duct 17 of the shaft 2a by openings 27.
A vertically adjustable guide roller G is carried by a console B of the frame F of the machine. As shown, the guide roller is placed so that its side surface touches the upper of the shoe, just below the seam which joins it to the flap W. Preferably, the axis of the roller G is in the vertical plane of the axis of the roller 18 or very close to this plane, this axis being perpendicular to the edge of the form at the working point. The machine also comprises a reel rotating constantly under the action of the shaft 6, the reel being similar to that which has been described above and comprising, preferably, a conical body 7 with helical rib 8, the small end of the body 7 being fixed in axial alignment on the shaft 6.
As shown in Figure 5, the bearing 15 has a threaded hole for receiving a retaining screw 28 with a knurled head. If the shaft 2a is to be rotated, this screw 28 is loosened, but if the shaft 2a must remain stationary, the screw 28 is tightened so as to keep it in the desired fixed position.
This device can be used in different ways.
For example, with screw 28 loosened and wheel 16 fixed
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
on the shaft using the retaining screw 16b, the wheel 16 is mechanically driven to rotate the shaft 2a constantly. In operation, the operator places the boot mounted on its form in principle in the position shown in FIG. 4, so that the guide roller G comes into contact with the side of the upper and that the retaining button 23 comes into contact with wear on top of the platform sole P with the mounting edge or flap W raised and in contact with the periphery of the roller 18.
The operator constantly moves the shoe in the direction of the. arrow K '(fig. 4), with the help of the friction exerted by the rotating roller 18, which constantly brings new parts of the mounting edge or flap into contact with the roller 18. As the boot advances in this way, the constantly rotating reel presses on the mounting edge and tends to push the latter inward, perpendicular to the edge of the form.
Since the roller 18 tends to keep the edge in the raised position, that is to say substantially perpendicular to the underside of the boot and that it thus opposes the free folding of the edge inwards, the thrust towards the inside of the propeller 8 against the edge, at a point very close to one side of the roller 18, clearly folds the edge over the periphery of the roller and thus exerts an appreciable lifting force on the edge so as to pull it tightly on the outside edge of the platform P. The mounting edge is thus pushed inward and on the underside of the platform, the reel pressing this edge against this underside.
As the roller 18 rotates, the adhesive exits from the port 20 and deposits at spaced points on the inner surface of the mounting edge and, when this edge is folded under the platform P, the adhesive the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
joins securely to the platform. In order to deposit the points of adhesive closer to one another, the roller 18 can be replaced by a roller such as that shown in FIGS. 7 and 8. This roller 18a has several orifices 20a distributed around its periphery. With this arrangement, it is preferable to mount the shaft 2a of the rotating roller on a fixed hollow shaft R having the same axis (fig.
7), closed at its lower end and comprising a single orifice F with which the inner ends of the orifices 20a coincide successively, as the roller rotates. As the latter rotates, dots of adhesive are applied to the mounting edge at very close intervals, such that these dots substantially connect to each other and form a continuous layer. Preferably, an automatic valve (not shown) is provided to stop the flow of the adhesive except when operating on a shoe.
Instead of rotating, the roller 18 can be made stationary to thereby form a fixed stopper which combines with the reel to produce the lifting force. To do this, you can loosen the stop screw 16b (fig. 5) and turn the roller 18 by hand until the hole 20 is in position to allow the adhesive to reach the surface. inside the mounting edge where it folds around the roller. The stop screw 28 is then blocked so as to keep the roller 18 in this position. With this arrangement, the adhesive flows from the roller 20 and forms a continuous strip on the inner surface of the mounting edge as the shoe advances.
If the two stop screws 16b and 28 were loosened, the roller 18 would turn only under the effect of the friction of the material, when the operation advances

the shoe.

Another variant has been shown in Figures 9 to 12. The frame carries a horizontal shaft 31 at the rear end of which is mounted a pulley 32 driven by a belt 33. The parallel shafts 1a and 2a with their clamping rollers 1 'Book 3a and 4a, generally correspond to shafts 1 and 2 and rollers 3 and 4 described above. The shaft 2a is mounted in a slide 8m and it can move back and forth to allow the roller 4a to be separated from the roller 3a in order to facilitate the introduction of the work between them. The shaft 2a carries, at its upper end, the tangent wheel 16 (fig. 12) which meshes with a worm (not shown) carried by the shaft 31.
As shown in Figures 9, 10 and 12, the rollers 3 and 4a have the shape of truncated cones, the front roller 4a being arranged with its small base upwards and being of smaller diameter than the rear roller 3a. Shafts 1a and 2a are inclined forward and downward in the direction of advance of the work, like shafts 1 and 2 described above. Preferably, the side surfaces of the rollers 3a and 4a have flutes, ribs, or are knurled so as to better grip the mounting edge. As shown in Figure 12, the shaft 2a is tubular and the roller 4a is hollow and provided with several rows of peripheral orifices 34. The shaft 2a is mounted on a fixed hollow shaft R coaxial (as in the arrangement of figure 7).
In this case, the shaft R comprises at its lower end, a spread part R 'which fits closely into the hollow roller 4a. The opening R 'has orifices' at points opposite to the rollers 3a, with which the orifices 34 of the roller 4a coincide successively.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
when the roller turns. The lower part of the shaft 2a rotates in an outer bearing 35. At its upper end, the shaft R is connected to a flexible supply line 37 through which the adhesive enters the interior of this shaft. .
On the left side of the frame of the machine, there is a vertically adjustable slide 39 (fig. 9), preferably elastically biased downwards and carrying, at its lower end, an elongated bearing 39 for the shaft 6, which bears to its end before the rotating reel formed by the conical body 7 and the peripheral helical rib 8, as described above. Shaft 6 is constantly driven and driven by two universal joints 40, 41 from a shaft 42 which rotates in bearings 43 carried by the frame of the machine and carries, at its rear end, a pulley driven by a belt 45.
Although it is possible to use a guide roller such as roller G in fig. 5, it is preferable, as shown in FIG. 10, to use an adjustable guide G ', normally fixed (fig. 10 and 13) placed just below the plane of the lower end of the roller 4a and having a surface G2 of contact with the work, narrow and rising in the vertical direction, located below the plane of the lower end of the rollers.
When this device is operated, the shoe is presented, as described above, so that the mounting edge is gripped between the rollers 3a and 4a and is lifted by them while, at the same time, the shoe is advancing. . As the roller 4a rotates, the adhesive supplied through the conduit 37 exits through the orifices 34 and is applied as spots or layers on the inner surface of the edge. The shoe is guided by contact with the edge
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
G2 of the guide piece G 'and, when the mounting edge comes out between the rollers 3a and 4a, it is attacked by the reel and folded down onto the underside of the boot.
It can be noted that in the devices of figures 1 and 9, given that the mounting edge is held in the raised position by the inner roller 4, or 4a, respectively, and given that the reel acts on this edge in a point very close to the rollers, the reel exerts a certain lifting action on the vamp as in the device of FIGS. 4 and 5, although, when two clamping rollers are used, the lifting force results mainly from the action of these rollers.
Instead of bringing the adhesive to the inner surface of the mounting edge using the device shown in figure 12, the inner roller 4x can be solid, with no adhesive exit hole and, as shown in fig. .
11, it can be combined with a tubule.ire holder 46 having at its lower end a nozzle 47 which projects a jet of adhesive against the inner surface 48 of the edge W, just before the latter is folded down by the flap. - tor, This tubular support 46 can be carried by the slide which carries the shaft 2b. itself carrying the roller 4x, the shaft 2b corresponding to the shafts 2 and 2a described above and being carried and actuated in the same way.
It can be noted that, in each of the above devices, in which a device subjects the flap, the mounting edge or the extension of the vamp to a continuous lifting force and a continuous folding force, it is also provided means for bringing the adhesive onto the inner surface of the edge in the interval between the application of the lifting and folding forces. Accordingly, in each of the variations
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
As shown, means are provided to ensure continuous mounting and continuous flow of the adhesive, so that the need to apply glue to the flap, the mounting edge or the extension of the adhesive is eliminated. upper, by a separate operation, before fitting.
Instead of positively driving the roller 18 or, indeed, any of the other rollers 3, 4, 3a, 4a and the like, the rollers can be mounted to rotate freely under the effect of the. friction exerted by the boot and, in this case, the advance of the work depends solely on the operator and the assembly results depend on the action of the reel in combination, with the stop role played by the roller.
FIG. 14 shows the application of the apparatus of FIG. 1 to the assembly of a chair seat.
This seat 40, usually made of a rigid material such as wood, has a cushion on one side (in the figure, the underside) and the leather or fabric cover 41 is pulled over this cushion and its edge 42 ( "mounting edge") is raised to come beyond the side 43 of the seat. This mounting edge is snug between rollers 3 and 4, it is pulled up so that it fits tightly around the pad, after which it is folded back by the rotating reel 7, adhesive being first applied on the inner surface of the edge, so that when it is folded against the surface 43 of the seat, it adheres strongly to it, as seen at 44. The assembly of seats is thus much cheaper and much more faster than previous methods of applying the cover by hand.
Although several variants have been shown, it is understood that the invention comprises, in general,
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
any other variant in accordance with its spirit. It is of course further understood that when expressions such as the top "," the bottom "," below "," above ", etc. are used, they are taken in a relative sense, with respect to the drawings and for convenience, and that they are not to be understood in a limiting sense with respect to the mode of operation of the apparatus.
Although the term "fitting" applies, in general, to the shaping of an upper or the like on a rigid wooden last, and although the apparatus described applies especially to the manufacture of footwear, it is understood that the expressions "form" and "assembly" used in the foregoing, unless the scope is intentionally limited, are broader in nature and apply to any operation in which a flexible material, more or less extensible is shaped (mounted) on the contour of a substantially rigid part (shape).
For example, and as described above, the apparatus according to the invention, with or without modification, is applicable in upholstery, especially for applying the covering, for example leather or fabric, uniformly on a seat (the "form") and to fix the edge of this cover under the seat. Another example of this operating mode is the application of leather or fabric to the frame, which is in principle rigid, of a travel bag or the covering of boxes with a flexible material such as fabric, the frame or the box constituting. , in this case, the "shape".
