Or, quand on opère ,
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
1 ) Supprimer les parties coudées 3 et 4 et dispo- ser deux poulies de renvoi 33 et 34 (fig.3);
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
lons 22' (fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Extraction process and apparatus, applicable in particular to the manufacture of glues, gelatins and the like.
It is known that from animal tissues it is possible to prepare gelatins and certain categories of glues, often distinguished by an original name (skin glues, bone glues, fish glues). These products are derived from the collagen material contained in the tissues.
Originally, the gelatin was extracted from the waste skin which was boiled in a tank heated over open fire in the presence of water ', so as to convert the collagen material of the skin into glue. -gelatin and to make one or more broths. These processes have been improved by the use of autoclaves receiving steam under pressure, especially in the treatment of caseins. Extraction times have been reduced and, by following, product quality improved. However, when we operate,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
on rabbit skin vermicelli or on scraps of skin, these become felt during cooking and, under a large volume, filtration is difficult or impossible.
The object of the present invention is, in the first place, a process which, among other advantages, offers that of easily allowing the extraction of gelatin from raw materials capable of giving rise to felting.
This process also has the advantage of leading to a relatively short processing time and it is known that the quality of a gelatin, whatever the raw material used, is all the better as the production time was shorter. .
Finally, it offers the great advantage of being able to be run continuously.
The process consists essentially in making the raw material flow into small pieces in the form of a sausage, ribbon or the like, long and loose in countercurrent with respect to an aqueous extraction liquid and in making prevail, in the extraction chamber, a gradually increasing and then decreasing pressure during the passage through said chamber, at the same time as it is heated.
In particular, it is possible to cause a temperature gradient to prevail in the enclosure in order to operate at the highest temperature in the maximum pressure zone.
In the preferred embodiment adopted, the material subjected to extraction is made to travel by hot water in the form of a coil, ribbon, etc., subdivided into a multitude of almost contiguous but distinct sections and the extractor liquid is forced to pass through narrow passages between two successive sections in order to get from one to the other. By virtue of this feature, in one of these sections composed of pieces of raw material gathered in a loose manner, stirring is caused which favors the efficiency of the extraction and the elimination of felting.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
A convenient and advantageous way of putting this method into practice consists in creating the variable pressure hydrostatically by arranging the enclosure or extraction zone in the form of a channel with a downward branch followed by a branch. rising with an intermediate horizontal branch, therefore, in particular, in the form of a U-shaped channel.
The invention also comprises an apparatus specific to the implementation of the process defined above.
The description which will follow with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be carried out, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text, of course being part of said invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, with cutaway, of the apparatus produced in the form preferably adopted.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, cut away, of a fragment of the chain forming part of this apparatus.
Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to Figures 1 and 2 respectively and relating to variants.
In 1''example chosen, the apparatus comprises a tubular channel having, together, the shape of a U and serving as a guide for a chain with plates or buckets.
The channel consists of a tube or an assembly of tubular sections which forms the shape of a U, one of the branches 1 of which is longer than the other branch 2, these branches comprising, at the top, extensions. 3 and 4 cubits towards each other. These tubes are made of a material capable of withstanding the action of hot acidic or basic liquors and are lined on the inside in such a manner.
At its upper part, the short branch 2 is @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
perforated at 5 and surrounded by a collecting basin 6 with a starting pipe 7 forming an overflow; the top of the long branch 1, that is to say above the level of the bottom of the collecting basin 6, there is provided a pipe 8 for the inlet of extraction liquid.
Heating means are associated with the channel in
U to provide calorific input to substances being processed; these means can prevail over the entire length of the U-shaped channel or be located at the desired locations.
In the example of the drawing, indirect heating jackets by fluid have been shown, in this case steam circulation jackets 9, 10 and 11 with steam inlet pipes at 12, 13 and 14 and purge pipes. or evacuation of condensed water at 15. The steam flow rate, and where appropriate, the temperature of the heating steam can be adjusted independently for each jacket. To each of these jackets or at least, as has been shown, to the base liner of the U or to the corresponding portion of the channel can be added measuring devices, such as thermometers, manometers, etc. etc ...; at 16 is shown a manometer indicating the vapor pressure in the jacket 10.
In the tubular channel is arranged an endless chain which. passes uncovered from the extension 3 of branch 1 to the extension 4 of branch 2. The chain, designated as a whole by 17 comprises a series of plates 18 each provided with a multitude of perforations 19 and tightened in their center , between two yokes 20 and 21 assembled by screwing, the adjacent yokes of two consecutive plates are connected by chain links 22 assembled by pins 23 to these yokes.
The chain is driven, in a continuous or intermittent movement, by a wheel 24 with deep groove in which the plates 18 engage in turn to be pushed by lugs or tocs provided, for example, near of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
periphery of this wheel at the beginning of the throat. In order to allow adjustment of the tension of this chain, flanges 25, 26, facing each other at the adjacent ends of the extensions 3 and. 4, are coupled by one or more tie rods 27 provided with adjustment nuts 28 and which constitute a convenient but not exclusive means of adjusting the tension by taking advantage of the flexibility of the U-shaped tubular channel.
At its upper part, the extension 4 of the short branch 2 of the U-shaped channel has a notch 29 which corresponds to the loading station.
The method of treating skins with the aid of the apparatus shown is carried out as follows.
It will be assumed that the wheel 24 (moved in any suitable manner) rotates counterclockwise (arrow @ and thus drives the chain 17 in the direction of arrow f2.
As the passage facing the notch 29, the intervals between consecutive plates are loaded with pieces of skin to be treated ("vermicelli" of skin, for example) either by hand or mechanically, for example. through a hopper or distributor designed and actuated to operate in synchronism with the progress of the chain.
The extraction liquid, which can be pure water or water with added reagents, is admitted continuously through line 8 and leaves, charged with dissolved and suspended matter which can pass through the perforations of part 5, through collecting basin 6 and pipe 7. It thus travels along arrow f3 against the current with respect to the pieces of skin.
The pressure in the extraction channel increases from the outlet of the pipe 8 to the base of the U then decreases to the perforated zone 5 where, expressed as the height of the water column, it is still sensi-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
be equal to the height h1 of the orifice of pipe 8 above the level of bowl 6 (plus, if applicable, the pressure at the inlet through pipe 8): the pressure is maximum in the horizontal branch of U where it is equal to hl + h2.
The extraction liquid passes from one compartment (delimited by two consecutive plates 18) to the next by the perforations 19 of the intermediate plate and finally reaches the perforated zone 5 of the U-shaped channel after having passed through all the compartments and there. be distributed through the mass of pieces of skin they contain.
The spent skin pieces fall at the exit of the extension 3, for example into a hopper which directs them to a rotary dryer for their subsequent treatment with a view to the manufacture of fertilizers.
The apparatus which has just been described may undergo certain modifications in consideration of particular circumstances.
In the first place, there is interest, especially with the vermicelli of skins or the marcs at the end of extraction which tend to form a magma capable of blocking the holes 19 of the trays 18; to constitute by-passes so that the fresh extraction liquid can bypass this difficultly penetrable magma; for this, it suffices to provide laterally relative to the tubular chamber traversed by the chain, in the vicinity of its exit from this chamber, bypass passages prevailing over a length corresponding at least to the interval between two consecutive plates 18.
Fig. 3 shows a. advantageous embodiment of this bypass device. The upper part of the right branch of the tubular channel 1 is slatted, as indicated in and is surrounded, at some distance, by a tubular casing 30 thus defining a passage of bypass 31 by which the water or other washing liquid, introduced through the tubing 8 ', can bypass - @ --- -
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
n the magmas too difficult to penetrate, which are found on the plateaus 18; until, towards the bottom, it encounters loosest packed and therefore more penetrable vermicelli cakes. The casing 30 may moreover be surrounded, over part or over all of its height, by another casing 9 'defining between them / a heating jacket.
Secondly, it should be remembered that the fresh skins, not yet subjected to extraction in the apparatus described, contain a high proportion of water. During the hot extraction treatment, the water thus retained by the skins plays, under the influence of the supply of heat, the role of solvent in parallel with that played, for its part, by the heat. water admitted in S for the same purpose.
Two broths are thus formed which are concentrated and, at a certain point of the apparatus, they acquire the same density and the same maximum concentration. This point is generally located towards the downstream end of the horizontal branch of the tubular canal and it is therefore advantageous to draw off the gelatinous broth at this point.
A modification of the apparatus designed to allow this extraction has also been shown in fig 2 although it is not necessarily applied in combination with the bypass device. This modification consists in the addition of a withdrawal device 32 which rises to a height h3, preferably less than h2.
From the point of view of mechanical construction, it is also possible to make, separately or jointly, the two modifications indicated below:
1) Remove the bent parts 3 and 4 and place two return pulleys 33 and 34 (fig.3);
2) Replace the links 22 by universal point couplings, in particular by mail- @
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
lons 22 '(FIG. 4) articulated on the yokes 20, 21 by orthogonal axes 23, 23' instead of parallel axes as in the case of FIG. 2 in order to give more flexibility to the chain.
The apparatus which has just been described offers many advantages, many of which are, in a more general manner, advantages of the process forming the object of the invention.
In the first place, the treatment is carried out continuously and the exhaustion is methodical thanks to walking against the current; the degree of exhaustion can be regulated by modifying the maximum pressure as will be indicated below or the speed of the chain or both; it can therefore, in particular, be pushed to the maximum.
Although, at the top, the apparatus is open to the air and is thus free from the complications of autoclaves, the extraction is carried out there under pressure and it goes without saying that one can, of on the one hand, modify the maximum pressure by changing the length of the branches of the U or by inclining the plane of this U with respect to the vertical plane, on the other hand, modify the duration of exposure to the maximum pressure by changing the length of the base of the U or by proportionately proportioning the forwarding speed of the chain in relation to this length.
It is possible in particular and in particular thanks to the method of extraction as well as to the faculties of regulation of the heating to carry out the conversion and the extraction of the collagen material in a minimum of time and at temperatures> optimum, this which ensures better quality to the products obtained.
The extraction of the collagen material and the transmission of heat are facilitated by the agitation of the mass and the gradual increase, then the decrease, also gradual, of the effective pressure.

The apparatus described is suitable for the treatment of all animal materials which contain gelatins, that is to say not only skins (in particular rabbit skins) but also bones, etc ......... .
The thermal efficiency, that is to say the efficiency of use of the added calories, is high and it is easy to heat insulate the apparatus.
In addition, as stated above, the treatment can be carried out in an acidic medium or in a basic medium with the choice of suitable materials in the construction of the apparatus.
It is furthermore easy to combine two apparatuses of the type described above or even more, with a view to obtaining particular results.
It is possible, in particular, to pass the raw materials through an apparatus of which one or more of the determining factors (dimensions, speed of movement of the chain, temperatures or temperature gradients) are determined in such a way that they are 'produces rapid hydrolysis therein in order to obtain a first broth of poor quality (eg 0.5 to 1% gelatins); this preparatory treatment: the effect of reducing the volume of the material to be treated - (that is to say of the skin, bones, etc.) the reduction being able to reach approximately 50%.
The materials, the volume of which has been reduced in this way, are then passed into a second apparatus of the same type (for example in a plane forming an angle with that of the first apparatus so that the exit of the solid residues from the first is at above the input of the raw materials of the second) and, in this second apparatus, a concentrated broth can be obtained directly since, due to the reduction in volume of the materials having undergone the preliminary treatment, it is possible, all proportions kept , load more in each compartment, It is therefore possible
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
avoid the use of conventional concentration devices, so that the exposure time of the broths to high temperatures is reduced and the quality of the gelatins improved.
Furthermore, the determining factors of the second apparatus can be chosen so that the exhaustion is not complete and thus this second apparatus does not extract either the top broths or the tail broths which are generally poor. It is possible, where appropriate, to complete the exhaustion in a third apparatus arranged relative to the second as the latter is relative to the first. Finally, if desired, it is possible to use, instead of pure water, the first-treatment broth to carry out the second extraction.
Finally, it will be understood that the process and the apparatus described above apply to the treatment of coherent materials by means of liquid or even gaseous extraction agents (provided that the apparatus is closed at the top. ) and in particular in the preparation of mucilages, vegetable glues of tanning extracts from plants such as algae, wood, bark, etc. An additional physical or chemical treatment can also be carried out, for example a treatment of olanchîment by an oxidant or by a reducing agent; in fig. 3, at 35 and 36 are shown two sulfur dioxide inlet pipes; it is also possible to provide only one or to provide for more.
The following non-limiting example will illustrate how to implement the invention: EXAMPLE:
The apparatus is that shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. The tubular channel 1 has an internal section of 150 mm, the heights h1 and h2 being respectively 1.50 m and 4 m; the pitch of the chain, that is to say the distance between two consecutive plates, is 75 mm. In
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
this apparatus is introduced at the loading station 45 kgs of vemmicelli of skins (counted in the dry state) washed beforehand, so as to fill said apparatus.
Water is then admitted through the pipe 8 'until it flows through the overflow 7, then heating steam is passed through the liners surrounding the vertical branches and the horizontal branch of the tubular channel. After 30 minutes of heating (to about 100), the chain is started and the loading is continued at the rate of 45 kgs of skins (counted in the dry state) in about an hour. Likewise, the introduction of pure water is continued through tube 8 'at a rate of 60 liters per hour.
A 25% broth is withdrawn continuously from the extraction tube 32, which is then treated by the usual methods. The broth thus obtained has the following characteristic: for a concentration of 10%. its melting point is 37 and its gel point is 29. If we start with samples of vermicelli from the skins taken from the same batch but if the extraction is carried out by the usual means, the melting point of the 10% broth is 33 and the gelation of 24.
