<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Conformément à l'invention, on prévoit un flux pour son incorporation dans un mastic de poix, destiné à être utilisé dans la fabrication de planchers en mastic ou constructionsanalogues, qui est constitué par une huile d'une nature qui ne dégage pas de fumées nocives ou irritantes lors du chauffage ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"Mastic manufacturing process".
The present invention relates to the manufacture of pitch mastic and more particularly that intended for the construction of floors,
The use of asphalt mastic for the construction of floors is known. However, asphalt mastic has the disadvantage that any grease or oil spilled or applied to the floor, for example during polishing, has a solvent action on the asphalt. The use of high temperature pitch for the production of pitch mastic is also known, but while pitch mastic, produced from a high temperature distillation process, is resistant to grease or oil. when used as a floor, it suffers from the disadvantage that it cannot be pigmented satisfactorily, due to the high "free carbon" content of pitch at high temperature.
In addition, black is a color that does not lend itself
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
not for use in homes and offices.
It is known from British Patent No. 56 $ .705 that the use of coal tar pitch having a low "free carbon" content for the production of pitch mastic floors allows this mastic to be pigmented and thus rendered. suitable for use as a floor in living quarters and offices. In addition, this floor is resistant to greases and oils that may be spilled or applied to it, such as during a polishing operation.
In addition, it is customary, in the preparation of known sealants for use as floors, to include in the sealant a coarse-grained component, a fine-grained component and preferably an absorbent filler together with a pigment.
The process according to the invention contemplates the use of these substances in the preparation of a mastic. Such substances may be added to the mastic in known quantities, such as those provided for by the British Standard Institution in its regulation for colored pitch mastic floors No. 1375 of 1945.
A flux is also incorporated into the mastic, which may be a coal tar derivative such as anthracene, which is a material suitable as a flux and which makes it possible to bring the material to the appropriate consistency for its laying.
It is essential in the preparation and application of this sealant to maintain the temperature near, but below, a critical temperature at which the flux and / or other substances which may be included in the sealant give off noxious fumes, irritants or otherwise harmful which represent a danger and inconvenience to workers laying the floor. The known mastics have the disadvantage that, when certain coal tar oils containing tarry acid compounds are used, irritating fumes are given off during heating.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
above the critical temperature to be used when preparing and applying the pitch mastic. One of the main drawbacks of current sealants is the release of these irritating fumes.
Among its aims, the invention aims to prevent the release, during the preparation of the mastic or during the installation operation, of noxious or otherwise harmful fumes at any temperature and, in particular, at the working temperature, it is that is, at the temperature at which the mastic must be raised to allow it to be placed properly.
According to the invention, a flux is provided for its incorporation into a pitch mastic, intended for use in the manufacture of mastic floors or similar constructions, which consists of an oil of a nature which does not emit harmful fumes or irritating when heated;
such a stream may consist of an oil which is an average oil fraction of the tar resulting from a low temperature coal distillation operation, this oil possibly being refined in a known manner, for example by washing, for the elimination of acids and bases of the tar and which may then be distilled, or which may be a petroleum derivative, such as an aromatic extract, of a petroleum oil, which may be a mixture of the aromatic constituents of a petroleum oil removed from the tar. oil, such as by a solvent extraction operation and which is compatible with coal tar products including pitch.
Such fluxes are easily adapted to be mixed with the pitch without precipitation of solid matter and are free of substances liable to give off harmful or irritating fumes when the mastic is raised to the temperature desired for its installation.
Further, in accordance with the invention, in order to increase the mass of mastic or otherwise improve it, while at the same time
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
At the same time, making it less expensive to manufacture, a wood filler, advantageously in the form of sawdust or the like, can be incorporated in this mastic, which thus also serves to impart the heat-insulating properties to the floor. The wood is of such a nature that it is not given off noxious or irritating fumes when the temperature of the mastic is raised during the installation operation: the wood can be a hard wood which is non-resinous and which has a low moisture content. Such filler can be incorporated up to 50% by weight of the mastic.
The physical properties of a fluxing pitch and oil, as derived from the average oil fraction of the tar obtained from coal subjected to carbonization or distillation at low temperatures and the binder formed by the mixture of pitch and l 'oil, are shown in Table 1 below.

With regard to the numbered pitch (I), which is prepared by blowing water vapor into medium sweet pitch at a temperature not higher than 350 C or by prolonging the passage of vapor d 'water in the normal distillation of coal tar, which would otherwise provide an average sweet pitch, the physical properties shown in the first column of the table and the physical properties of a pitch obtained as a residue from the distillation of tar are given, produced as a by-product of the low temperature carbonization of coal in the second column.
Fluxes, which are aromatic extracts of petroleum oils such as those sold under the trade marks Dutrex and Iranol, have been incubated suitable for the preparation of the mastic according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The use of these fluxing oils added to the flexibility of the sealant and made it less prone to cracking later.
In an example of implementation of the process of the invention for the preparation of a fluxing oil, which is an oil obtained from the average oil fraction of the tar obtained from the coal, subjected to carbonization or distillation at low temperature - peratures, the average oil fraction can be refined and can be washed first with NaOH at 30 Tw. in a ratio of three parts oil to five parts NaOH to remove acids from tar.
The sodium salts of the acids in the tar, such as sodium cresylate, are then separated from the washed oil, which can then be called a washed Mbyenne oil.
Medium oil washed, well deposited; can then be subjected to a chemical refining operation according to the following guidelines:
I- washing with 3% by volume of H2SO4 at 40%
II- washing with 1 1/2% by volume of 80% H2SO4
III- washing with water to remove the mass of free acid
IV- washing with 30% NaOH solution to neutralize the free acid.
V- washing with 4% by volume of NaOH at 60 Tw.
The resulting oil from the above treatment can then be distilled under vacuum, the distillation apparatus operating under a vacuum of 70 to 73 mm Hg and the distillation temperature ranging from 190 C at the start of the distillation to 225 C to the end.
About 85% of the distillate is removed in this way. The resulting residual product having a boiling point greater than 300 ° C. and an average point which is not less than 345 ° C. must be the fluxing material according to the invention which is incorporated into the mastic,
It is evident that it results from the refining treatment and
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
from the distillation which precedes that the fluxing oil is substantially free of tar acids and bases.
The fine-grained component, the coarse-grained component and the absorbent filler used in the manufacture of the sealant may be as described in War Emergency British Standard regulation 1375 of 1947 and of British Standard regulation 1410 of 1947; products can be used in the manufacture of a mastic according to the invention depending on the amounts of ingredients and under the conditions set out in these regulations.
Coarse-grained component properties may vary depending on the thickness of the finished floor, as shown in Table 3 below: TABLE @ U 3

During the preparation, the mastic is thoroughly mixed to the proper consistency with the soluble binder, which is the pitch of fluxed coal tar, in the proportion of 10-20% at a temperature not exceeding about 160 C.
The mixture is cast into blocks which are remelted on site after being crushed into pieces in mechanical stirring mixers. Before laying, the mixture is brought to a temperature not exceeding 160 ° C. and it is spread by hand on the ground to be coated, the foundation or the ground being cleaned and prepared beforehand in known manner. Floors on which the sealant has been placed should not be walked on until the sealant has cooled to the temperature of the ambient atmosphere.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
It is obvious that a floor established with a fluxing material according to the invention is suitable for being polished with the aid of polishing products which contain petroleum derivatives, without danger that the polishing product exerts a solvent action on the surface. putty, and that any oils or grease spilled on the floor can be removed without having a solvent action on this floor.
In addition, given the nature of the fluxing oil, there is no danger of the release of irritating or harmful fumes, even when the critical temperature of 160 C is exceeded, which makes laying the floor much easier, which in the previously known practice required an installation or application temperature as close as possible to the critical temperature, but without exceeding it.
The invention is not limited to the proportions or the compositions of matter described herein by way of example.
