<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Improvements in Heat Resistant Alloys Containing Cobalt.
U.S. Application 473,387 of January 23, 1943 discloses that iron-based alloys which contain relatively large amounts of chromium and nickel as well as significant but smaller amounts of molybdenum, tungsten and columbium have been found in balanced proportions not only have higher resistance at high temperatures than other heat-resistant alloys of comparable cost, but are also characterized by their structural stability and the fact that they can be worked. with ordinary industrial processes more readily than known alloys which have comparable heat resistance characteristics and which contain significant amounts of chromium.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention also relates to alloys which can be effectively employed at high temperatures and even under conditions where they are subjected to high stresses while at these temperatures. By this it is meant that an object of the present invention is to provide alloys with which one can easily manufacture parts or machined articles and which can be effectively employed as moving parts in mechanisms such as turbines. gas.
Another object of the invention is a heat resistant alloy which has a structure stable at temperatures between about 5380 and 871 ° C.
It has been found that additions of cobalt to heat resistant alloys containing an appreciable proportion of chromium have a beneficial influence on the heat resistance of these alloys, provided the other constituents of the alloys are properly dosed. It has also been discovered that additions of significant amounts of cobalt to alloys thus determined have an advantageous effect on the alloys which contain chromium in proportions of between 12 and 22% and nickel in proportions ranging from 18 to About 31%.
That is to say, the present invention aims at the production of an alloy which has very favorable characteristics at high temperatures and which contains cobalt in proportions of between 9 and 50% approximately, chromium in proportions of between 12 and 22% approximately and nickel in proportions of between 18 and 31% approximately.
Table 1 comprises two types of alloy corresponding to the invention, one containing a proportion of chromium taken in the lower part of the preceding scale of proportions, the other a proportion of chromium included in the upper part. of this scale and both containing sufficient nickel to make the alloy austenitic. For @

to allow comparisons, the following table also includes alloys designated under the names of S 495 and S 588 which are similar to the alloys embodying the present invention, except that they do not contain cobalt as a constituent.

These alloys also contain carbon for about 0.10 to 0.70% and molybdenum, tungsten and columbium each of which forms about 2.00 to 6.00% of the total. The proportions of manganese and silicon are those which are

commonly used for higher grade stainless steels, such as type 310 of the specifications of the "Iron and Steel Institute".
It should be noted that the proportion of nickel which enters the improved alloy is not of critical importance, except that the nickel must be in a sufficient proportion to give a stable austenitic character under all conditions. terms of use.
These alloys were forged, rolled and machined to give the usual test specimens. These were tested under a number of constant loads while at temperatures between approximately 538 and 871 C to verify the strength and blister characteristics of the various alloys under varying load and load conditions. temperature. The results of these tests, compared with those of similar tests made on roughly similar alloys (S 495 and S 588) except tools did not contain cobalt, showed that almost in each case the service life of the l The alloy under a given load and at a given temperature is considerably increased by the addition of cobalt.
Table II gives the results of the rupture tests of alloys of type S 495 with and without cobalt and with proportions of cobalt of between 10 and 30% approximately, replacing in each case a corresponding proportion of iron.
The tests were carried out at the temperatures indicated: 649, 704 5, 815 6 and 871 C. The time required for rupture is given in hours; the percentage reduction is indicated; the load is given in Kg per cm2 and the hardness of the test specimen at the end of the test is given in Brinell measurements.

From the preceding table it emerges that the alloy S 497 which contains approximately 20% of cobalt, is much more resistant than the alloy S 495 (without cobalt) at 649, 704 and 871 C (see table II a, b and c) . At 815 5C about 30% cobalt is required to give a similar increase in service life, while at this temperature alloys containing 10 and 20% cobalt exhibit strength characteristics about equal to those of Alloy S 495.
This is because 815 5C is located roughly in the middle of the precipitation hardening temperature scale and most of the alloy's strength at this temperature is due to this. This means that precipitation hardening is more effective than adding 10 or 20% cobalt at 815 ° C.
Table III gives the results of similar tests on alloys of type S 588 and, as for Table II, the cobalt content of the alloy to be tested is specially indicated.

From the above table it emerges that additions of cobalt to the iron alloy S 588 in proportions of between 10 and 45% approximately, have a progressive effect of increasing the strength of the alloy at 732, 815.5 and 871 C. Although the increase in resistance is not exactly proportional to the increases in the cobalt content, the resistance increases with the increase in this content.
As shown in Table III, some compositions, which constitute embodiments of the invention, show excellent heat resistance in the molded form. For this reason the final products, such as for example the fins for gas turbines can be manufactured by a process of precision casting or "lost wax". In this connection, it may also be noted that for some applications where the alloy must be used in the molded state, it is advantageously possible to use substantially larger proportions of one or the other of the @
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
elements that form carbides (Mo, W and Cb).
This means that, under certain special conditions of use, the upper limit of the scale of proportions for each of the elements which give carbides can be raised, from 6.00% to about 10.00%, when the product final is a molded product. For applications where it is essential to increase the resistance to oxidation or corrosion, this increase can be obtained in the castings, by sacrificing a little the resistance, by an increase in the chromium content at the- above the values indicated above. This means that the scale of chromium proportions can be extended up to about 35.00% in molded parts for which resistance to oxidation or corrosion is more important than resistance. high in heat.
Table III also shows that the heat treatment improves the alloys which do not contain cobalt as well as the low cobalt alloys, whether or not these alloys contain large or small amounts of chromium. With regard to the heat treatment it should be noted that after having molded the alloy and having partially machined it by forging and / or rolling to give it the desired dimensions and shape, the parts thus manufactured were given a brief heat treatment at an elevated temperature, that is to say between 1177 and 1317 C approximately for approximately 1 hour.
They were then cooled rapidly, preferably by quenching in water, then subjected to an aging treatment at a temperature between approximately 704 and 871 C for approximately 16 hours to be finally cooled in air. , as more fully disclosed in application no. 515.924 filed December 28, 1943. It should also be noted that the tests made on the S.816 alloy and indicated by Table III took place after the test specimens formed with this alloy would have been subjected for
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
a short period of time to heat treatment at 12930C followed by water quenching and aging treatment as explained.
In summary, it should be noted that the present invention relates to heat-resistant alloys, containing cobalt and comprising the elements indicated below, in proportions taken in the following scales:

with the usual commercial proportions of alloying elements such as silicon and manganese or without them,
and the remainder being iron with the usual impurities in the ordinary proportions.
To test the invention, several hundred samples of molten steel were taken, forged, rolled and tested to establish their characteristics of heat resistance and mechanical strength at temperatures between 5930C and 704 C. The values thus obtained allow the invention to be defined, as we have seen. made above and to declare that all the alloys which include the constituents which have been said with proportions included in the scales indicated exhibit superior characteristics such as those which have been ordered.
Although examples of alloys which embody the invention have been given, it is evident that various changes can be made to the constituents of the alloys as long as these changes do not alter the basic nature of the alloy. on which the invention is based and that the dosage which is essential to make the addition of cobalt very effective as a constituent of the alloy is not destroyed.
It is clear, for example, that one can increase the proportions of the constituents of al-

For these reasons, the expression "balance consisting essentially of iron" means that the balance of the composition is made mainly by iron, but that it may comprise percentages of additional nonferrous alloying elements of the composition. and in amounts such that they do not modify the basic nature of the alloy and do not destroy the dosages targeted by the invention.
