<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Power unit for motor vehicles
The present invention relates to an engine group for motor vehicles making it possible to use small-sized engines and to arrange them in a relatively narrow location provided in the transverse direction of this vehicle, so that this engine group has In view of the bulkiness of large advantages over high power engine blocks requiring a relatively large chamber in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle.
An engine unit according to the invention is composed of two internal combustion engines which are arranged transversely on the vehicle with their flywheels turned towards the axis of the latter, the crankshafts of these two engines being coupled by means of mechanisms with bevel gears or helical couples, so as to engage a common drive member of the input shaft of the gearbox.
A clutch is provided between each motor and the coupling mechanism driving the drive member of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
common gearbox, or the crankshafts of the two engines each drive a helical pinion and these two helical pinions, cut in opposite directions, drive two helical pinions of corresponding sizes mounted on a common shaft which drives the gearbox, a single clutch being interposed between this shaft and the gearbox or else two embryos being arranged between the crankshaft of each engine and the helical pinion which it drives.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the two motors are mounted at a certain angle with respect to the transverse direction of the vehicle, these motors thus forming a V in the horizontal plane, which facilitates their arrangement in certain locations of the vehicle.
The invention also extends to various other characteristics which emerge from the detailed description which follows.
Embodiments of the power unit according to the invention are shown in the accompanying drawing.
According to fig. 1, two motors 1 and 2 are mounted in line transversely to the vehicle with their flywheels facing one another. The engine 1 engages, via a clutch 3, a bevel gear 4. For its part, the engine 2 engages, via a clutch 5, the bevel gear 6. The two bevel gears 4 and 6 rotating in opposite directions attack a bevel pinion 7 which they drive in the same direction. This pinion 7 is integral with the input shaft 8 of the gearbox 9. The set of bevel pinions 4, 6, 7 is enclosed in a housing 10 comprising a block of bearings 11 supporting the ends of the shafts on which bevel gears 4,6 and 7 are fitted.
Each engine is provided with its own accessories, such as starters 12, 13, dynamos 14, 15 and fans 16, 17, the latter being for example in niches provided for this purpose in the side wall of the vehicle.
It is obvious that the two clutches 3 and 5 can
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
be operated using a single command.
Fig. 2 shows a similar arrangement in which two motors 18, 19 with flywheels 20, 21 act, by two bevel gears 22, 23, on a common bevel gear 24.
In this arrangement, an untque clutch 25 is interposed between the shaft 26 carrying the bevel gear 24 and the input shaft of the gearbox. 27.
In fig. 3, there are also 'two motors 28, 29 arranged in line, as in the previous examples, and driving two bevel gears 30, 31 engaged with a common bevel gear 32 mounted on a tubular shaft 33 driving the clutch 34. L the receiving element 35 of this clutch is integral with a shaft 36 passing through a bore of the tubular shaft 33 and engaging the gearbox 37 placed on the other side of the box containing the bevel gear mechanism 30, 31, 32.
Figs. 4 to 6 show an embodiment in which two motors 38, 39 are also placed in opposite directions transversely to the vehicle, with their flywheels 40, 41 directed towards the axis of the vehicle. The crankshaft of the engine 38 carries a helical gear 42 in mesh with a helical gear 43 mounted on a shaft 44. Likewise, the crankshaft of the engine 39 carries a helical gear 46 in mesh with a helical gear 47 also mounted on the shaft 44. .
To obtain a drive in the same direction of the shaft 44 of the box, the two helical pairs 42, 43 and 46,47 are cut in opposite directions. In the example shown, the clutch 48 is interposed between the shaft 44 and the input shaft of the gearbox 45. It is however quite obvious that all the clutch arrangements described with the aid of FIGS. 1 to 3 for the transmission by bevel gears could also be used with the transmission by helical couples. For example, a clutch could be
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
interposed between each motor 38 and 39 and the shaft carrying the helical pinion 42 and 46 respectively. A housing 49 encloses the helical gears and supports the shafts carrying the various helical gears.
As shown in fig. 5, the motors 38, 39 can be mounted at an inclination a relative to the vertical to facilitate their arrangement in the location reserved for them and thus reduce the bulk.
Fig. 7 shows that the two motors 50, 51 can also be arranged at a certain inclination in the horizontal plane. In the case shown, these motors are placed at an inclination and - * - with respect to the transverse direction h of the vehicle.
The motor 50 drives a bevel pinion 52 and the motor 51 a bevel pinion 53, then these two bevel gears engage a common bevel pinion 54 of the shaft 55 driving, by a clutch 56, the gearbox 57. This arrangement can be also advantageous for making the best use of the space on board a vehicle, in particular when the power unit according to the invention is mounted at the rear of a vehicle such as a coach.
It should also be observed that with the arrangement provided in the motor unit according to the invention, the gearbox is well clear and easily accessible for maintenance and repairs.
The invention further allows the constitution of high power motor units using two low power motors which can be mass-produced, whereas heretofore, to obtain a corresponding force on board a motor vehicle. , it was necessary to use a high power engine of special construction and having a very large space requirement in the longitudinal direction, which made it necessary to reserve a considerable length of the vehicle for its assembly.
Various modifications can be made to the exemplary embodiments shown without departing from the scope of the invention.
