BORNES DE CONNEXION POUR ELEMENTS ELECTRIQUES TELS QUE RESISTANCES, CONDENSATEURS, INDUCTANCES etc."
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Des exemples de réalisation de l'invention seront décrits en se reportant 'aux dessins ci-joints dans lesquels : la figure 1 est une vue en élévation d'une borne mettant en oeuvre des caractéristiques de la présente invention ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

CONNECTION TERMINALS FOR ELECTRICAL ELEMENTS SUCH AS RESISTORS, CAPACITORS, INDUCTORS etc. "
The present invention relates to connection terminals for electrical elements such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, etc., which can be enclosed in hermetically sealed receptacles, the terminals being mounted in the wall of the receptacle in such a way that they hold the hermetic seal; the invention also relates, and this as a new industrial product, to such electrical elements provided with terminals in accordance with the present invention.
It is well known to employ terminals for use with hermetically sealed receptacles comprising a cylinder of vibrating or ceramic material which can be sealed directly into the receptacle by soldering or the like. It is also known to provide the above-mentioned cylinder with an axial hole through which a wire is fixed to the electrical element.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
placed in the receptacle and thus being able to serve as a supply conductor and to provide a part carried by said cylinder to be connected to other devices outside the receptacle.
In order to ensure a hermetic seal, it is known to provide means by which the central hole through which the supply conductor passes can be filled with solder or the like, that is, in the case of an insulator ceramic, by metallizing a surface of the ceramic around the hole, or in the case of glass or vitreous substance to provide the insulated plice with a mechanical tube which is sealed to it and through which pass the wires of bring; then arrangements are made to cause the solder to flow around the feed wires so as to weld them to the metalized surface or to the metal tube as the case may be.
It is one of the advantages of the different types of terminals mentioned above that the application of heat to the connection piece during soldering to the external circuit can tend to soften the solder securing the terminal to the receptacle, since this results in the fact that the seal cannot remain airtight. If, however, a metal disc is used as the part sealing the entire terminal to the receptacle this disadvantage can be avoided because then the sealing surface is far away from the connection part.
According to the present invention there is provided an insulated electrical terminal adapted to be sealed in a metal receptacle comprising in combination - the cylindrical tube of vitreous or ceramic substance fixed or welded to a metal tube, an annular metal disc fixed or welded to the circumference of said cylinder and adapted to be sealed to a metal receptacle, a second metal piece welded to the end of the aforementioned cylinder providing a terminal for connection to circuits located outside the receptacle.
Exemplary embodiments of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an elevational view of a terminal embodying features of the present invention;
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figures 2 and 3 show modified arrangements.
Referring to Figure 1, it will be seen that the device is constituted by an end piece 1, metallic which can be easily welded to glass, this piece is welded to a glass insulator or vitreous substance 2, through the center from which passes a metal tubular part 3, also welded to said insulator.
A metal insulating disc 4 is welded to the lower end of the insulating piece, so as to act as a means for fixing the whole of the connection piece to a receptacle 5 in a well known manner.
The end piece 1 is provided with two extensions for soldering, one of which can suitably be longer than the other and be used to connect the element either to internal circuits: or to external circuits.
The feed conductor 6 of the circuit element sealed in the receptacle is brought through the tube 3 and sealed at its exit with solder 7 but instead of terminating at this point the feed conductor is extended. and welded to the shortest extension of the end piece 1, in a figure of eight.
The advantage obtained by this arrangement is that the sealant 7 at the end of the tube is so far from the point of terminal 1, to which the outer connection is soldered that the probability of melting the sealant is very. low.
In addition, the only metallic connection between these two parts, namely the lead wire, is of such small size that the heat conduction towards the seal is very reduced.
Other forms of terminal 1 can be used, such as for example that shown in fig. 2 where the connection piece is constituted by a single portion of tube of which a part of the wall is cut to form the connection extension A1 and is also provided with two saw cuts 1B made in the lower part and through which the conductor of feed passes and is welded at 8. In this way, the lower cylindrical portion of the connecting piece acts as a metallic protection for the sealing weld 7.

The invention is not limited to a connection terminal with a glass insulator. As is well known, metallic elements can be hermetically welded to certain ceramics by interposing a thin wire or glass cement between the ceramic and the metal. The insulators shown in Figures 1 and 2 can therefore be made of ceramic and metal elements which are welded to them by glass cement. Other modifications will appear to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
