<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Tongue needle for hosiery crafts.
This invention relates to needles for knitting looms of the kind described in Belgian Patent No. 358,192 filed on December 20, 1945. It relates to a needle capable: of being easily manufactured according to calibers or fine numbers and of which the parts are suitable for use. easy and quick assembly without soldering, brazing, welding or pinning.
This needle comprises a shank and a semi-rigid barb joined together by an elbow with a semicircular internal surface, a tongue being associated with the shank of this needle by means of parallel and spaced side walls which enclose this shank. The tongue is provided with a hook having a semi-circular outer surface that comes into contact with the semi-circular inner surface of the needle bend. The barb is hollowed out on its internal surface with a groove for receiving the end of the hook of the tongue when the latter is united with the head of the needle.
The arrangement is such that the beard has an inwardly curved portion which is closer to the needle shaft than the end of the hook which is placed in the groove of the inner surface of the beard.
In the attached drawing:

Fig. 1 is a central vertical sectional view of one embodiment of this needle, certain parts being deleted.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along the horizontal line 2-2 of FIG. l, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 2-2 of fig, 1, but looking in the direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view, also taken along the line 4-4 of FIG. 1, but looking in the opposite direction to that indicated by the arrow.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken along line 6-6 of FIG. 9.
Fig. 7 is a view on a larger scale of the needle shown in FIG. 6, the tongue occupying the position with closed hook, which is drawn in dotted lines.
Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional view taken along the horizontal line 8-8 of FIG. 7.
Fig. 9 is an elevational view of a portion of 1 needle drawn in FIG. 6 on the same scale.
1 designates the shank of the needle having a flattened edge 2. This needle has a weaker cross section at 3, in the region of its hooked end, that is to say of its working end, and has a part folded down as shown in 4, to form a hook or a beard. This hook or this beard comprises a part 1 curved inwards, a part 6 curved outwards and a point 7. The general shape of the needle in side elevation resembles that of ordinary needles with flexible beards. The 5-6-7 beard is preferably relatively stiff, i.e. it is not
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
not as flexible as the beard of ordinary needles of the well-known type with flexible beard.
In the vicinity of the bend of the needle, its beard has a longitudinal groove intended to receive its hooked end 12. The tongue comprises a grooved shank 10 having a flat face 9 pressing against the flat face 8 of the needle. ; it further comprises an elbow 11 terminating in a hooked end 12, the latter being shaped so as to match the groove $, when the parts are assembled. The tongue has a slot 13 intended to receive the point 7 of the beard of the needle when the chaser through which the thread passes is firm.
In practice, the part 11-12 forming a tongue is elastic, but the part 12 follows the slot, so as to ensure a relatively fixed anchoring.
For the assembly of the needle and the tongue, the latter is applied flat between the elbow 6 of the beard and the rod 3, so as to be placed in the same general plane.
The tongue is then lifted in the direction indicated by the dotted arrow beyond the elbow until the elbows 11 and come into contact and the end 12 engages in the groove 8. The parts 11, 12 and? have sufficient flexibility to allow = this.
Note that, as the space between the inward curved part of the beard is less than the span of the hook of the tongue, once the parts are assembled, the tongue cannot be accidentally pulled out. of the needle by a traction exerted in the direction of the rod.
In the first embodiment shown, the part 11 forming a tongue does not pivot in the soda 4. In the other embodiment shown in FIGS. 6 to 9, the same components are designated by the same reference numerals, but bear the exponent a. Here, the end of the hook 12a is engaged in a groove 8a whose bottom and the end of the hooked part
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
are drawn in an arc dant the center of curvature coincides with that of the curve of part 11a, so that when the tongue 9a is moved from the position drawn in solid lines in FIG.
7 to the position drawn in dotted lines or vice versa, there is a pivoting of the internal part 11a in the external part 4a, that is to say that the tongue is kept anchored by pivoting in the orochet of needle without the need for a pivot or rivet. The parts of the needle are, in this second embodiment, assembled in the same way as in the first embodiment, as indicated in fig. 6.
The needle and the tongue can be used in the same way as in the aforementioned patent and, like the device ensuring the relative movements between the tongue 9 or 9a and 1 + needle 1 or the in order to close and opening the eye for the passage of the thread does not form part of the present invention, it is not described here.
