<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
@
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
REVENDICATIONS ---------------------------

Improvements to cleaning vacuum cleaners.
This invention relates to cleaning vacuum cleaners of the type comprising a nozzle housing that is moved over the surface to be cleaned and it relates to a vacuum cleaner provided with a fan driven by an electric motor enclosed in a housing whose total height is reduced as much as possible.
Various proposals have already been made for obtaining a vacuum cleaner, usually mounted on wheels, which can easily be walked under furniture with little free space above the floor, and a vacuum cleaner has thus been proposed where the nozzle protrudes from the floor. the front and a layout where the fan was established in a horizontal chamber behind the nozzle and powered by a motor mounted behind the fan chamber.
According to the present invention, a vacuum cleaner of low overall height and of normal dimensions from front to rear, comprises a housing in which a motor with a substantially vertical axis and a fan chamber are housed side by side behind the nozzle. Thus, the line which connects the vertical axes @

of 1 <ch ,, cbre of the venti7.tcur and of the motor is approximately parallel to the length of the nozzle and perpendicular to the path traveled by the vacuum cleaner.
The housing has an approximately planar top wall with the nozzle placed at the front end of the container, while the air passage from the nozzle to the fan chamber is formed between the planar top wall of the housing and the wall. upper 1-cha @ bre of the ventilator. An opening normally closed by a cover is made in the planar top wall of the housing and preferably immediately above the ventilator hearing, and this opening is capable of receiving a separate nozzle or fitting after removal of the cover, so that the vacuum cleaner can then be used for cleaning at a distance from the floor using a flexible hose.
Preferably, the housing comprises two main parts, an external compartment which includes the main nozzle and carries the drive motor and an internal compartment which comprises a suction chamber, the suction fan and the discharge passage which leads to the dust bag, these compartments being connected in such a way that the space between the upper wall of the fan chamber and the internal surface of the upper wall of the housing constitutes the air passage from the nozzle to the chamber .
Preferably, an agitator of known type is mounted inside the nozzle so as to be able to turn therein and is suitably actuated by means of a belt by a pulley fixed to the fan shaft, and a transmission such as a belt is established between the lower end of the fan shaft and the lower end of the adjacent motor shaft.
To allow the vacuum cleaner to be maneuvered without increasing its total height, the rear end of the housing has a chamber in which the lower end of a control handle is articulated, and the mechanism holding the latter,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
such as a spring-loaded pawl capable of engaging with a notch formed in an arcuate member fixed to the handle, is housed in this chamber.
One form of construction of a vacuum cleaner according to the present invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a small-scale perspective view showing the vacuum cleaner,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view taken mainly in section along the line II-II of Figure 3,
Figure 3 is a view from below of the vacuum cleaner, some parts being removed,
Figure 4 is a side elevational view, taken mainly along 1a. line IV-IV of figure 3,
Figure 5 is a cross section taken along the line V-V of Figure 3, and
Figure 6 is a sectional view showing part of the container and the fan chamber with a broom attached to it.
The vacuum cleaner shown comprises a housing, the. flat upper wall 1 curves up and down at its front end to form a nozzle 2. In this external compartment 1 is fixed an internal compartment 3, which has a fan chamber 4 and a discharge passage 5 to which the nozzle is attached. dust bag 6. The internal compartment is provided with a vertical wall 7 which forms, as figure 4 best shows, the side wall of the passage 2a through which the air is sucked from the nozzle into the chamber 4 of the vacuum cleaner. fan through the inlet 8 of the latter.
The fan 9 is mounted on a vertical shaft 10 so as to be able to turn inside the chamber 4 and is provided with a boss having a housing for receiving the bearings 11 which are mounted on a plate 12 forming the bottom. of the fan chamber. The shaft extends through the plate 12 into an adjoining chamber 13 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
is provided with a pulley 10a for a belt 14 which operates a rotary agitator 15 in the nozzle.
The chamber 13 is provided with a horizontal partition 16 provided with a rib or a rim extending from bottom to top to engage in a groove made in the base of the pulley 10a which prevents leaks. air charged with dust from the chamber where the belt is housed. The lower extract of the fan shaft carries a second pulley 17 by means of which the fan is actuated by the motor, as described below.
An engine compartment 18 integrally formed with the outer housing 1 is disposed along the fan chamber 4, such that the latter and the engine compartment are approximately parallel to the length of the nozzle 2. The compartment 18 is closed by a removable bottom 19 which contains not only the lower bearing 20 of the shaft 21 of the motor, but also a chamber for a fan 22.
The upper bearing 23 intended to receive the motor shaft is established in a housing on the inside face of the flat upper wall 1 and an inlet orifice is made at 24 for the ventilation air which. is drawn into the interior of the motor chamber by fan 22 and discharged through a rearwardly directed discharge opening 25.
The lower end of the motor shaft 21 is provided with a pulley 26 which is connected by a belt 27 to the lower pulley 17 of the fan shaft, the belt and the two pulleys being enclosed in a casing. suitable 28 removably secured by screws or otherwise.
At the rear end of the housing, between the flat upper wall 1 of the outer compartment and the rear part of the inner compartment 3, there is a chamber 30 capable of receiving the socket 31 of a handle, which is hinged. at 32 to appropriate supports inside the chamber.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The sleeve of the handle is provided with a sector 33 provided with notches into which penetrates the free end of a spring 34 fixed to the wall of the internal compartment 3, the arrangement being such that the spring slides on the curved surface between the notches when the handle is moved while the vacuum cleaner is in operation. The. spring can also be engaged with one or the other notch and thus maintains the handle either in the horizontal position shown in figure 4, or in the vertical position shown in figure 1, or even in an intermediate position if notches are provided at appropriate points.
In order to be able to use the vacuum cleaner with a separate nozzle for cleaning above the floor, an opening 35 is made in the flat upper wall facing the fan 8, but is normally closed by a removable cover 36 provided. spring-loaded tabs or the like. This cover has an elongated shape, as is clearly shown in Figure 1 only to match the shape of the vacuum cleaner, and when it is removed, a fitting 38 can be fitted to the opening so as to establish direct communication between a flexible pipe (not shown) connected to the fitting and the inlet inlet of fan 8 (see figure 6). The connector is provided with a suitable spring latch or the like 39.
Any known device can be used to adjust the height position of the squeegee relative to the carpet, FIG. 3 showing an adjusting device 40 by means of which the front wheels can be lifted in the known manner.
When the apparatus is used for cleaning on the floor, it will be noted that the rotation of the motor actuates the fan shaft via the belt 27 and consequently the rotary agitator 15, so that the The dust-laden air is sucked into the interior of the appliance by @
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the .suceur 2 and into the fan chamber through the air passage 2a and is discharged through the discharge passage 5 into the dust bag 6.
When the appliance is used for cleaning above the ground, the nozzle 2 is first lifted, for example by means of the height adjustment device 40, or the agitator is put out of position. This is done in any known manner, and the cover 56 is then removed before fitting the fitting 38 which carries a hose nozzle or other suitable dust collector. The suction created by the fan causes the dust-laden air to draw directly through the hose and fitting into the fan chamber from where it is discharged into the dust bag 6.
