<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

As the: ùr) c1trent the drawings, the apparatus comprises a frame eiun: 1 its ends of two pedestals or supports 1 mounted on a base. Two rollers 2 and 2a are tufted so that they can be rotated between the sur-

ports at end 1, one of the rollers 2a being substantially
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
exactly above the other roller 2, and capable of being moved away from or brought closer to the roller 2 in a known manner by virtue of a screw 2b actuated by hand.
Between the end supports 1 are also mounted a number of parallel guides 3 and 3a, on which is arranged a pair of sliding elements 3b, 3c. The sliding element 3b carries a member serving as a support or guide 4 for the movable mount 5 of the tool serving to drive in the pins and the stud magazine 5a, while the other element - sliding 3c carries the support 11a and the anvil 11, with which the movable tool 10 cooperates.
Each support 4 and 11a is mounted on a threaded shaft û or on a worm 15 and 15a, so that the movement of these shafts or screws produces a displacement of the supports transversely to the frame, the two worms 15 and 15a being interconnected by toothed wheels 15d, so as to synchronize the movements of the two pairs of sliding elements 3b, 3c, so that the movable tool 10 will always occupy a corresponding vertical position. to that of the anvil 11.vertical
The reciprocating movement is transmitted to the movable frame of the tool by a cross member 6 mounted in notches 6a in each end support, the tool 10 being carried by the cross member 6 or being kept in contact with it. here by means of a spring or other device (not shown).
The reciprocating movement is communicated to the cross member by means of a pair of connecting rods 7, actuated by means of cranks 8 mounted at each end of a shaft @@ said cranks being operable by hand. thanks =). a crank pin 9, or by means of a force coming either directly from the main driving element, or through transmission belts or worms as it is most appropriate,
The pins are usually in the shape of a rectangular U, having two substantially parallel tapered tips.
These pins are brought in one by one under the

it movable by extraction out of a magazine 5a in a suitable manner, for example, by the effect of the pasenaeur, by means of a spring or by a mechanical device.
In the magazine embodiment 5a shown in FIG. 3, the pins 16 are mounted (their tip pointing downwards) on a horizontal support 17, the section of which may be U-shaped. Behind the series of pins are found. a piston 18 arranged so as to push the pins forward along the support 17, in the direction of the movable tool 10, under the effect of a spring
19. The exit at the end of the magazine is normally blocked by the movable tool 10 itself and allows the exit of a spindle 16 only when the tool occupies the highest point of its stroke, only the passage of one spindle at a time is possible, given that the tool returns after a moment of closing the magazine outlet.
In order to prevent a second spindle from being partially ejected from the magazine spindle, in the event that the first / does fall out, the magazine outlet 16a can be magnetized to maintain a delivered spindle in the exact position until that it is forced into the belt by the tool.
According to another embodiment shown in FIG. The device for unthreading one spindle at a time the tool comprises a hopper 22 enclosing a number of spindles the points of which are directed downwards. In the immediate vicinity of the interior opening of the hopper is a longitudinally grooved cylinder or pair of spaced discs 20 having a series of notches 21,
the total length of the cylinder or the distance between the =! discs 20 being slightly less than the width of the horizontal part or bridge 23 of the pins. The hopper 2 is arranged so that its orifice is substantially opposite the vertical axis of the cylinder or of the dis-

However, the arrangement being such that when a solid part of the cylinder or discs is below the hopper, the tips of a spindle may hang down below the hopper in front of a hopper. axis 20a.
But the solid part of the cylinder or of the discs cooperates with the bottom wall 22a of the hopper to retain the bridge so that it does not escape from the hopper. However, when the cylinder or discs are rotated to bring a groove or pair of notches 21 below the hopper, the bridge 23, freeing from my bottom wall 22a of the hopper, slides into this groove and in some cases. / notches 21 and the spindle is brought forward to be deposited, the points down, below the movable tool at a rate corresponding to the striking of the latter.
The anvil 11, cooperating with the movable tool 10 has a slightly curved surface 11b, in order to allow that, when the tips of a pin enter the belt and strike the anvil, the latter are curved inwards. and eventually re-enter the belt when the moving tool comes to the limit.
The anvil 11 is adjustable in the vertical direction as shown in Figure 4, so that it can be used for belts of different thickness. According to a preferred embodiment, the anvil is provided with a body 11d, having a hardened and chamfered end 11c resting on a hardened wedge 12 mounted transversely in the socket 12a of the anvil body, the wedge being, as desired, adjustable in the socket, for example, by means of nuts and bolts 12b, so that lateral movement of the latter will raise or lower the anvil.
One of the two rollers 2, which has been discussed above, is arranged so as to operate in concert without the main control shaft 8a, for example by means of a

In the upward part of the tool stroke the belt is moved forward as before by the rollers and another spindle is ejected from the magazine.
During the next downward portion of the tool stroke, the first spindle is permanently depressed on a flat portion of the anvil surface, while the second spindle is driven into the belt and its ends are bent. on the curved part of the anvil, so that at each stroke, the tool operates on two spindles, for each of them carrying out part of the complete operation of inserting and driving into the belt . In order to perform the operation, the two cylinders 2 and 2a are, separated by the device 2b operated by hand, the belt 25 on which to operate being inserted between these cylinders and these being brought together to grip the belt. king.
