Fig. 1 montre une coupe transversale du dispositif;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Further training in vehicle braking devices"
In conventional braking devices with two cam-actuated pads, the force applied to these pads is a function of the ratio of the brake linkage and the force that the driver can exert on the pedal.
With this limited effort on the part of the driver, one could manage to exert a considerable force on the brake pads, if one could increase the linkage ratio in the required proportions.
This arrangement would require a movement of the brake pedal so substantial that it would not be possible for the driver to perform this work. It is well known that the stroke of the brake pedal is practically limited to a value which rarely exceeds 200 mm.
On the other hand, when using too large a linkage ratio, frequent brake adjustment is necessary.
The present device aims to remedy the drawbacks cited above by increasing the linkage ratio while maintaining a normal pedal stroke and to provide the adjustment and automatic take-up of play due to wear of the lining.
For this purpose and according to the invention the first part of the travel of the brake pedal is used to apply the pads against the brake drum by means of the cam acting on one end of these pads, while the force itself is transmitted by a force multiplier mechanism acting on the other end of said pads; said mechanism being established so that the position of its elements is not changed during the return stroke of the control member in order to maintain constant the spacing between the pads and the drum whatever

or wear of the brake linings.
By way of example, one embodiment of the device according to the invention will be described below with reference to the appended drawing in which:
Fig. 1 shows a cross section of the device;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line II-II of FIG. 1, and
Fig. 3 shows the control levers with cross section of certain elements of FIG. 2.
The device comprises a brake drum 1, integral with the vehicle wheel (not shown), a brake plate 2 and two pads 3 and 3 '. A cam shaft 4, integral with the lever 5, pivots in the plate 2. This shaft 4 carries a finger 6 to which is hooked a return spring 7. The shape of the cam 8 is such that after having performed a certain rotation, the radius remains constant. The end of the pads 3 and 3 'is in contact with the cam 8 via the rollers 9 and 9' and these pads are constantly urged against the cam 8 by the spring 10.
The force multiplier consists of a casing 11 in which are housed two screw wheels, 12 and 13, with perpendicular axes. The screw 12 is integral with a shaft 14, at the end of which is mounted a freewheel lever device. This device comprises a hub 15, wedged on the shaft 14. On this hub, freely rotates a lever 16, urged against a stop 17 by a spring 18. The hub 15 is provided with notches 19 in which rollers 20 are provided. which, during the rotation of the lever 16 in the direction of the arrow F, make the latter integral with the hub 15, In the direction of rotation contrary to the arrow F, the lever 16 releases the rollers 20 and returns freely against its stop 17 , the hub 15 having retained the position where the lever 16 had brought it.
The worm wheel 13 is extended, on either side of its axis, by two screws 21 and 22 respectively with left and right thread, which are screwed into nuts 23 and 24 sliding in the casing 11.
At the ends 25 and 26 of the nuts 23 and 24, are mounted, in articulation, the pads 3 and 3 '. The lever 5 of the camshaft 4 is connected to the lever 16 by a rod 27. The yoke 28, connected to the lever 16, carries a slide 29 whose length corresponds to the angle of rotation of the cam 8, necessary for bring the rollers 9 and 9 'on the part of the cam with constant radius.
The first brake adjustment is carried out by first acting on the pads, by means of the brake cam 8. The pads are kept in this position and then the lever 16 is acted on.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
until the shoes 3 and 3 'come into contact with the brake drum 1. The lever 16 is then allowed to return against its stop 17 and the cam 8 is returned to its initial position, as shown in FIG. 1; then, the rod 27 is adjusted so that the pivot 30 is fully abutted against the slide 29 (FIG. 3). All other adjustments, due to wear of the brake linings, will be carried out automatically.
The rod 31 is connected to the brake control member.
A spring 32 surrounding the shaft 14 is provided between a keyed ring 33 and a friction washer 34.
The operation of the device is as follows:
When a traction is exerted on the rod 31, the cam 8 is first pivoted so that the brake pads 3 and 3 'come into contact with the drum 1. At this moment, the cam 8 will have pivoted by a angle and radius of the cam is then constant. During the rotation of the cam 8, corresponding to the angle Ó, the rod 27 will have driven the yoke 28 and brought the bottom of the slide 29 against the pivot 30. Therefore, by continuing the traction on the rod 31, the force is transmitted to the lever 16 with a reduced displacement thereof, since the pads have been brought into contact with the drum by the cam 8. The force is then transmitted to the brake pads by the screw wheel device 12 and 13 and by screws 22, 23 and nuts 24, 25.
The lever 16, mounted as a freewheel on the hub 15, drives the latter by jamming the rollers 20, when it pivots in the direction of arrow F.
When the brakes are released, the force ceasing on the rod 31, the lever 16 is brought back against its stop 17 by the return spring 18. In this movement, the hub 15 has remained stationary, thanks to the freewheel device, but no force is applied to the pads 3 and 3 '. The cam 8 is returned to its normal position, by the return spring 7, and the brake pads then move away from the drum by the value corresponding to the constant radius of the cam 8, reduced by the distance from the center of the cam to the dish of it.
The spacing of the pads, after each braking, is therefore constant, regardless of the wear of the linings.
