<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the extinction of the flame is an obstruction of the nozzle through which the mixture of fuel and air leaves and which must necessarily have a very small diameter.
The object of the invention is an improved form of construction of a preheating device, free from the drawbacks listed in the preceding paragraph, owing to the fact that an automatic device serves to release the orifice of the nozzle from its obstructions and that the relative dimensions of the devices which supply air and fuel into the nozzle are chosen so as to obtain a suitably proportioned mixture and thus to maintain with certainty a sufficient flame to heat the vaporiser to the extent necessary so that the burner starts up in the shortest possible time.
These results are obtained by applying the principle described in the French patent application of the same applicant of June 11, 1945 entitled: "Improvements to liquid fuel burners of the pressure type" and the device according to the present invention can be used in combination with that which is the subject of the aforementioned patent application, or with any other pressurized burner comprising a vaporizer capable of being preheated by the action of a flame exerted on it.
The preheating device according to the invention to be applied to a pressurized fuel burner comprises a cleaning needle carried by a support fixed with respect to a fuel tank, arranged in an nozzle joined in a flexible manner with the tank. and capable of being maintained in a lowered position after the preheating operation so as to first penetrate the cleaning needle into the nozzle and unclog its orifice, and then to keep this orifice closed.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, the preheater to be applied to a pressurized fuel burner comprises a mixing chamber, a nozzle and a fuel supply tube forming a mounted assembly of. a removable manner on a fuel tank, a device for imparting a vertical movement to this assembly so as to open and / or close the orifice of the nozzle by a cleaning needle, and a flexible device for fixing this assembly in a sealed manner on the reservoir and to reopen the nozzle after the lowering movement.
On the attached drawing which represents a preheating device constr @ it according to the invention:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
fig. 1 is an elevation of this device, FIG. 2 is a section, vertical along the line II-II of FIG. 1, FIG. 3 is a transverse section taken along line III-III of la'figure 2, FIG. 4 is a detailed view of the nozzle and parts combined with it, on a larger scale, the nozzle being open, FIG. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 4, on which the nozzle is closed ,.
Fig. 6 is a cross section taken along line VI-VI of Figure 4. According to the embodiment shown, a mixing chamber 1, a nozzle 2 and a fuel inlet tube 2 are assembled together. 'so as to form a removable assembly in front of, to be mounted on the upper wall or cover 4 of the tank of a pressure lamp of a known type and which, for example, can be of the type being the object of the aforementioned patent application.
A rod passes through the fuel supply tube 3 and terminates at its upper end with a conical portion 6 the shape of which is chosen so as to fit precisely into the inner conical wall of the nozzle. 2; which ends with an orifice 8. The conical portion 6de the rod .5 comprises everything at. end of its upper end a fine wire of very short length ±, which is mounted on it and which passes exactly through the orifice 8, so that each time the preheater is switched off. tion, the wire 9 enters the orifice 8 which is thus cleaned automatically from the inside and. closed.
The nozzle. 2 is in one piece 'with a threaded extension 10, which passes through an outer sleeve 11 and which surrounds an inner sleeve 12, slightly spaced from a tube 13 fixed in the upper end of the inlet tube of the fuel 3. The upper end of the tube 13 is chamfered at an angle which is the same as that of the inner cone 2 of the nozzle. The diameters of the sleeve-12 and the.
tube 13 are chosen so as to form between them a narrow annular air passage channel 14 communicating with an air inlet port 15, which is located above the surface 16 along which the tube 13 and sleeve 12 are brazed or fixed one on top of the other in any other way, tube 13 is slightly spaced from the rod so as to form a channel
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
annular passage for fuel.
The base of the outer sleeve 11 is fixed on the upper end of a flexible metal bellows 17, the lower end of which is fixed on a cylindrical casing 18 and on a cylinder 19, directed downwards from the casing. 18 in the fuel tank and concentrically surrounding the fuel inlet tube 2, this cylinder 19 being closed by a plug
20 at its base, but pierced with a fuel inlet port
21, allowing fuel from tank 4 to reach the lower open end of feed tube 3.
The rod 2 is screwed at point 22 in the stopper 20 and has flats on its sides, as can be seen in FIG. 3, so as to form passage channels allowing the fuel to rise around the rod as far as the nozzle 2. The upper portion of the rod 2 which passes through the tube 13 is cylindrical. The cylinder 19 is pierced with an air inlet orifice 24 in the vicinity of its upper end.
A cap 25 is rotatably mounted around the upper end of the casing 18 and has an inwardly directed flange 26 which rests on an annular shoulder.
27 of the sleeve 11. An operating arm 28 is mounted on the cap 25 and carries inside diametrically opposed rollers 28a. These rollers penetrate into inclined profiled slots 29, cut in the casing 18, so that a partial rotational movement of the operating arm 28 in one direction causes the cap µ to partially rotate and descend, the movement of which is transmitted by the shoulder 27 to the outer sleeve 11 and to the nozzle 2 so as to lower it until the needle .9 enters the orifice 8.
The assembly described above is intended to be placed in a socket 31 fixed in an opening drilled in the upper part of the reservoir 4, this socket being threaded inside so as to house a nut 32, the former of which is lower end rests on a flange 33 integral with the base of the casing 18 and which thus maintains it in its position in the sleeve 31, as can be seen in FIG. 2. The nut 32 supports a ring 34, from which the arms 35 start, fig. 1 which end in a ring 36 carrying the mixing chamber 1, the lower end of which is open and surrounds the nozzle 2 and which is pierced with an air inlet orifice 37 above the nozzle .
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The device described above did not work during the normal operation of the burner with which it is combined, the parts normally occupying the positions of fig. 5, on which the nozzle 2 is in its most bsse position, the thread or needle closing the orifice 8 and the bellows 17 being maintained in the state of compression.
But to. When the burner is in action, a partial rotational movement is imparted to the operating arm 28 'around the axis of the rod. and the tube so as to raise the hat. 25, the sleeve 11, the inner sleeve 12 and the nozzle 2, under the action of relaxation of the bellows 17, in the position of FIG. 4, thereby establishing a passage for the fuel from the interior of the tube and around the rod 5, to the space in the nozzle 2.
The air to be mixed with the fuel enters through the orifice 24, passes through the interior of the bellows 17, through the channel 15 and through the annular channel 14 to reach the interior of the nozzle. dimensions of the mixing chamber 1 'relative to those of the nozzle, are chosen so as to create a pressure drop in this chamber, sufficient to raise a quantity of fuel large enough to maintain combustion. .
At the end of the preheating operation, one imparts a partial rotational movement to the arm 28 in the direction opposite to that of the start-up, thus causing the nozzle to drop and, consequently, clean and close the orifice 18 with the needle.
. The composition of the fuel mixture is regulated mainly by the size of the. air inlet channel 15 and through the seal between tube 13 and rod 5. The dimensions of these two variable spaces being fixed, the nature of the flame obtained at the outlet of the mixing chamber 1 is influenced in to a large extent by the di-. mension of the clearance between the chamfered portion of the upper end of the. tube 13 and the surface. conical 'inner 2., of the nozzle 2.
Although the device shown in the drawing is in a position with a substantially vertical axis, its axis is generally inclined in practice, so as to direct the flame leaving the mixing chamber ¯1 on the main vaporizer tube of the burner.
It has been found that the best results can be obtained in practice by giving. various elements
