<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Le fonctionnement est le suivant: sans quitter la poignée 36, on presse la manette 34, le câble 32 et la gaine agissent sur les oreilles 30 et 31 des verrous 26 et 27 qui se rapprochent en comprimant le ressort 28, les verrous se dégagent des encoches 29 des deux disques 18 et 19 et le carter 20-21 peut alors tourner librement autour de l'axe 3;

"Articulated stem for cycle handlebars."
The invention relates to an articulated stem for handlebars of cycles and other vehicles which makes it possible, by the addition of a handlebars of simple shape, to obtain 4 will, during walking as- at, the stopping of the. cycle, any position of the handlebars among those of the various types of handlebars in use, from the position of the so-called "very raised" handlebar to that of the "very low" handlebars, passing through all the intermediate forms.
According to the 'essential characteristic of the invention, the stem is' composed of two main parts: a first so-called fixed part made integral with the front fork in the usual manner, and a second movable part articulated on the first and intended for receive the handlebars which are also articulated on it directly - or through any suitable part, the axes of the two articulations being perpendicular to the running direction of the cycle. During movements of the mobile part of the stem, the orientation of the handlebars is maintained or slightly modified by appropriate mechanisms.
The maintenance, or the ,, slight modification of the orientation of the handlebars during the movements of the movable part of the stem can be obtained in particular by mechanisms with endless cable connecting rods wound on pulleys, endless chain wound on sprockets, or any equivalent device.
The stopping and fixing of the stem in the different positions can be obtained by locking the two joints, that of the movable part on the fixed part and that of the handlebar or its fixing part on the movable part. For locking the joints, any known system will be used which makes it possible to obtain effective stopping.
It is also possible to provide for the locking of only one of the two aforementioned articulations, the rigidity of the mechanism for maintaining the orientation of the handlebar then ensuring the immobility of the second articulation.
So that the maneuvers for changing the position of the stem take place without the hands leaving the driving handles of the vehicle, it is possible to provide the controls for the locking mechanisms of the joints in the vicinity of the handles, which they can even do. part. For remote locking commands, -we can use the-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
canisms known in use, such as: levers, triggers, rotating rings, flexible targets in sheaths, etc.
It is possible to provide for the protection of the locking and orientation mechanisms against bad weather by means of housings which may themselves constitute the main part of the movable part of the bracket.
The amplitudes of rotation of the joints can be limited by stops. Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will moreover result from the description which will follow with reference to the appended drawing, which shows, by way of nonlimiting examples, two embodiments of the invention. FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an exemplary embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view corresponding to Figure 1 and showing the articulated bracket in different positions.
FIG. 3 is a side view with partial section of another exemplary embodiment of the invention with different mechanisms.
In the exemplary embodiment which is the subject of FIGS. 1 and, the fixed part of the stem is constituted by a tube 1 on which are welded two cheeks 2 crossed by an age 3 around which the mobile part 4 can turn. , which is immobilized at will between the cheeks 2 by the tightening of the nut 5; in the mobile part 4 can turn the sleeve
6 fixed by a pin 7 to the handlebar 8. Instead of having its axis coincident with that of the rotating sleeve b, the handlebar could be fixed by a clamp forming part of the part 6, or by any other equivalent means allowing both an easy disassembly for the change of the handlebars.
The immobilization of the sleeve 6 on.la. moving part
4 is ensured by the tightening of the nut 9, the part 4 being split into 10. To maintain the orientation of the handlebars during changes of position, a cheek 2 carries a lug 11 through which passes an axis 12, the sleeve 6 also carries a lug 13 in which passes a pin 14 and the two pins 12 and 14 are joined by a connecting rod 15.
FIG. 2 shows an average position (reference digits without index) and two extreme positions (reference digits with index a for the low position and with index b for the high position). To switch from one position to another, just loosen the nuts.
5 and 9, to turn the movable part 4, then to tighten the nuts. If the deformable quadrilateral formed by the movable part 4, the connecting rod 15 and the lugs 11-13 is a parallelogram, the handlebar maintains a fixed orientation in its movements; if one wishes to vary this orientation slightly, it suffices to give different lengths to the opposite sides of the deformable quadrilateral ensuring the connection between the cheeks 2 and the sleeve 6.
A lug 16 fixed in part 4 moves in a semi-circular groove 17 made in a cheek.2 and thus limits the movements of part 4, but an analogous result could be obtained by any other system of stops *
Instead of tightening on each of the two joints, it would be possible to provide tightening on only one of these joints, the connection via the connecting rod 15 or an equivalent device then ensuring the immobility of the other joint.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
For reasons of symmetry or aesthetics, a second connecting rod can be added; All these variants are cited here for information only and are obviously in no way limiting.
FIG. 3 shows a second exemplary embodiment of the invention; there are parts 1, 2 'and the handlebars 8 of the previous figures. On the cheeks 2 is fixed the axis 3 integral with the notched disc 18 while on the handlebar 8 is fixed the notched disc 19 identical to 18. The handlebars are joined to the fixed part 2 by a housing. cut on the figure; this housing is composed of d.eux half-shells 20 and 21 having their joint plane along line AB and joined together; this casing pivots on axis 3 and the handlebar pivots in the casing around its axis 22. an endless cable 23 is wound outside the discs 18 and 19 on which it is immobilized at 24 and 25; this cable and the discs can be replaced by an endless chain and two sprockets or any equivalent device.
'In a groove formed in the casing 20-21, two bolts 26 and 27 are provided which, pushed by the spring 28, engage in the notches 29 and the discs 18 and 19 and thus make the assembly rigid .
.on the locks 26 and 27 two ears 30 and 31 receive one a traction cable 32 and the other the sheath which are fixed respectively on a lever 34 and its support 35 placed near a handle 36 of the handlebar ..
The operation is as follows: without leaving the handle 36, the handle 34 is pressed, the cable 32 and the sheath act on the ears 30 and 31 of the bolts 26 and 27 which come together by compressing the spring 28, the bolts are released from the notches 29 of the two discs 18 and 19 and the casing 20-21 can then rotate freely around the axis 3;
it suffices at this moment to act on the handlebars to move it to the chosen position and, when it is reached, the lever is released, and the locks 26 and 27 engage in another pair of notches 29 of the discs 18 and 19. making the displacements for the changes of position, the cable 23 fixed, at 25 on the disc 18 wound in one direction and unwinding in the other around the disc 18, in- thus dragging the rotation of the disc 19 on which it is fixed at 24; it thus forces this disc 19 and the handlebar 8 which is fixed to it to remain in the same orientation during the movements of the mobile assembly. Oh sees in figure '3 different positions of indices a and b which parts 8, 19 and 24 occupy.
In order to obtain a slight change of orientation of the handlebars during the movements, different diameters can be given - to the discs \ 18 and 19. A tension device, the cable 23, not shown in the figure, can be added. .
At the ends of the travel of the movable arm formed by the casing 20-21, the bolts 26 and 27 abut on the heels 07-of the discs 18 and 1 ;. these stops can 'be transferred to another place, for example, between the casing 20-21 and the part 2.' .eour la.clarté -du drawing only three locking positions have been shown, but .il It is understood that in practice we are not limited to this number.
