<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Manufacture of asbestos oiment pipes.
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for making an asbestos cement pipe, and more particularly a pressure pipe, for use as pipes for water or other liquids under high pressure.
The main object of the invention is to produce an extruded pipe, made of asbestos cement, of great strength and maximum density, having smooth, straight interior and exterior surfaces of uniform diameter all around. this pipe being formed of a homogeneous plastic composition and reinforced throughout the length and throughout the thickness with fibers which extend substantially in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the pipe.
In the practice of the process a composition of plastic consistency is employed composed of a mixture of hydraulic cement, such as Portland cement, asbestos fibers and water with or without fillers or inert materials.
A mass of the plastic material is expelled under substantially constant pressure and at a substantially uniform flow rate through a fixed die by which it is formed into a tube; as it passes through the die and into the die, the mass is compressed and compacted to a high degree to incorporate and unite the cement particles and fibers into a homogeneous body of maximum density.
An important feature of the invention is the production of an asbestos cement pipe in which the fibers extend in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the extruded pipe.
Asbestos cement extruded pipes made by the method can be formed into continuous sections of any desired length having uniformly rectilinear holes, interiors and exterior surfaces. Due to the fact that the fiber reinforcement runs the length of the pipes, they are much more resistant to. bursting force than similar pipes of equal wall thickness, in which the fibers extend in a helix or circumference. The reinforced pipe will have a burst strength of two to four times its normal pressure for any given wall thickness.
The process allows the use of fibers that are shorter and less expensive than those used in pipes produced by en-

rolling a sheet material on a mandrel and therefore one is able to inexpensively produce pressure hoses of exceptional strength. Short asbestos fibers of the kind commonly known as "S" or ball fibers can be used satisfactorily.
The pipe is extruded with smooth surfaces inside and out and therefore requires no subsequent machining or finishing.
Due to its smooth interior the hose has a very low coefficient of resistance to liquid flow. The smooth exterior surface and the adjusted wall thickness make it easy to join the pipe sections with the use of a customary joint piece without the need for machining or turning. Another advantage of the pipe is that it is highly resistant to corrosion from external influences and to corrosion or erosion from the flow of liquid in the pipe.
The method and apparatus are shown schematically in the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of an expelling machine for making the pipe.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the machine.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the hopper taken along line 3-3 of Figs. 2 and 4.
Fig. 4 is a partial longitudinal section taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of a pipe fragment showing the position of the fibers.
The pipe is made of a plastic fiber cement mixture composed primarily of portland cement containing from about 10% to 20% by weight of unopened wicks or relatively short bundles of staple fibers commonly known as fibers: in a ball, with or without the addition of suitable inert materials and filler. Water is added to the mixture in sufficient quantities to form a moist but not wetted mass of plastic consistency.
The material is placed in the hopper 10 of the machine which leads it to the screw 11 mounted so as to rotate in the cylinder or in the casing 12, preferably provided with a detachable liner 13. The hopper is provided with a power supply device which is best seen in fig. 3 and which functions to compact the material in the channel 21 of the screw. This feed device comprises a pusher or a tamper 14 which is disposed on one side of the hopper and fixed to a tilting shaft 15 which is tilted by an eccentric 16 via an arm 17 and a crank 18.
The rear end 20 of the worm is wedged at 22 to a rotating shaft 2, 3. The shaft 23 is supported at two or more spaced points on suitable thrust bearings 24, only a series of which is shown, and is actuated through a coupling by means of an electric motor * and a reduction transmission (not shown} housed in the casing 25, although it is possible to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
use any other appropriate means of control,
The front end 19 of the screw is supported on a cylindrical bearing 27 fixed to a spider 28.
The cross has a plurality of arms 29, usually four, which are preferably arched to help resist the thrust caused by the expulsion of the material and which are positioned approximately at the angle at which the material arrives from the material. screw and have a shape such as to cause as thin a cut as possible in the material, compatible with the necessary strength of the brace construction.
The screw tends to expel the material in a vortex or rod with a helical orientation of the fibers; this was found to be harmful. To overcome this difficulty, the machine was provided with guide blades 30, generally three or four in number, mounted on a sleeve or a collar 31 fixed to the front end 19 of the screw to rotate with the latter. The blades are pitched at an appropriate angle to the axis of rotation of the screw, or they can be constructed to allow for pitch adjustment and to direct the fibers longitudinally and distribute the material evenly through the blade. enlarged inlet chamber 32 of the expulsion die 33.
The blades are adjusted and spaced so that they do not coincide with the protrusions of the screw and they can be arranged behind or in front of the fixed spider 28. It is preferred, however, to place them behind the spider, as is the case. represented in the drawing,
The chamber 32 has, as can be seen in FIG. 4, convex walls curving from the exit end of the screw towards the tube forming part of the die, and it is shaped so as to compress the material in its passage through the die.
The opening of entry into the chamber is much larger than its exit, generally three to four times as large, owing to the combined action of the advancement of the screw and the contracted shape of the chamber, a mass of material collects in the chamber and is made compact by increasing in density so as to be free of voids by the pressure exerted in the chamber. Passing between the arms 29 of the spider, the material is divided into sections. All the sections are brought together and kneaded together as the material is subjected to compression in the chamber.
Die 33 is attached by bolts 34 or other fastening means to the anterior end of casing 12. A fixed core 35 is placed concentrically within the die. The core is supported so that it cannot wobble on a rod 36 attached to the spider 28. A can provided on the threaded end of the rod allows the core to be detached. When the die is detached, the spider 28 can be slid out of the front end of the casing to allow the screw to be removed and replaced. Different sized dies and cores can be used interchangeably on the machine to form pipes of different diameters and different wall thicknesses.
The asbestos cement material made compact by the fact that it is forced back by the space between the fixed die and the fixed core is expelled in a uniformly rectilinear tube, of determined diameter and thickness, having smooth interior and exterior surfaces free from wrinkles,

from indentations to bulges. The expelled pipe 38 shown in FIG. 5 comprises a customer tubular body, reinforced over its entire length by asbestos fibers 39 which extend lengthwise, substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pipe and which are solidly embedded in the cement and joined together. this one.
When expelled, the pipe is capable of supporting itself sufficiently that it can be cut to length and handled without deformation. The cut lengths can set in any conventional manner and this set can be accelerated by the use of an autoclave.
