Apparatus intended for the manufacture of a reinforced tube.
This invention relates to an apparatus for the manufacture of reinforced tubes and more particularly of tubes provided with a metallic or other reinforcement embedded in the wall of the tube. The invention particularly relates to the manufacture of flexible tubes, but is not limited thereto.
The apparatus is intended for the manufacture of a reinforced tube; it comprises an extrusion chamber, intended to contain a plastic material capable of being extruded by an annular discharge nozzle, and to receive a helical-shaped reinforcing element introduced into the chamber through an inlet opening of the latter ; this apparatus is characterized by the fact that it is provided with a rotary feed member relative to the casing of the chamber, which member is arranged so as to grip and drive said reinforcing element in said chamber up to said nozzle from which this element emerges by being embedded in the extruded material which constitutes the wall of said tube.
It is possible to operate the apparatus by employing as a plastics material any substance which can be extruded through a nozzle and which is subsequently cured or subjected or not to treatment. It is possible, for example, to employ a heat-hardening substance or a thermoplastic material, or a substance which, after having been extruded in the plastic state, can be hardened by chemical or other treatment.
However, it is preferable to employ a thermoplastic material or a heat-hardening material. Particularly satisfactory results are obtained by employing a thermoplastic material of the polyvinyl chloride type.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view thereof. Fig. 2 is a vxle in horizontal axial section, on a larger scale, by line II-II of the apparatus of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line III-III of FIG. 2.
The apparatus comprises an outer casing indicated at 1. (: This casing is mounted on a suitable support 2. The casing 1 is generally cylindrical in shape with an enlarged central part 3 (fig. 1 to 3) on which a lateral boss 4 (Figs. 2 and 3) protrudes, The boss 4 is internally threaded for the purpose of securing a device by means of which the plastic material is brought under pressure in any suitable manner.
The casing 1 is reamed and a die 6 fits exactly there. This die forms the outer wall of an annular extrusion chamber 7, the inner wall of which is constituted by an insert member â mounted in the casing 1 so as to enter the die 6. A threaded rear sleeve ti is screwed into a flange 10 0 located at the rear of the casing 1 and internally threaded. This sleeve strongly presses the die 6 and the member 8 against a shoulder 11, determined by a flange 12 that has the front end of the casing 1.
Locator pins 14 are mounted in corresponding grooves formed in a flange 13 of the member 8 and in the front face of the e. x inner end of die 6.
An annular groove 15 is formed in the periphery of the die 6 and communicates with the extrusion chamber 7 by a number of ducts 16 which are distributed around the die 6 in the manner shown in FIG. 3. These conduits open into the chamber 7 near the posterior end of the latter.
The groove 15 communicates with the interior of the lateral boss 4 and with the device 5 which supplies the plastic material, by means of two inclined conduits 17 which lead to xx diametrically opposed passages 18 formed in the widened part 3 of the casing. .
The outer ends of the passages 18 are closed by means of threaded plugs 19 which can be removed when it is necessary to clean the passages.
The sleeve 9 is hollow and contains two ball bearings 21 and 22 which are protected against dust by means of a cover 22a. A feed member, rotatably mounted in the insert 8 and supported towards its rear end by the bearings 21 and 22, comprises an outer tubular member 23 and an inner member 24.
The inner member 24 has a helical thread formed in its outer surface 25 and is mounted in the member 23 near the front end of the latter.
Tightening screws 26 and 27 make the elements 23 and 24 rigidly integral with one another so that they can rotate together. The helical thread 25 could be formed in the inner surface of the element 23.
The elements 23 and 24 forming the feed member can be driven in rotation by means of a pulley 30, mounted at the rear end of the element 23 and driven by an electric motor 31 (fig. 1) by means a speed reducer 32 and a belt 33.
The inner member 24 has an axial bore, in which the reduced diameter end 34 of a rod 35 is fitted. This rod projects through an opening 36 which is provided on the front of the die 6 and thus forms a annular extrusion nozzle 37. A helical reinforcing element, such as 39 (fig. 1 - is pushed forward by the feed members 23, 24, as will be explained later, so as to be fed through the tube. nozzle 37 and embedded in the material expelled from the extrusion chamber 7.
The rod 34 freely passes through the inner element 24, but is retained in the latter by a collar 38.
Accordingly, the rod 35 will not be rotated by the rotation of the feed member, as it is prevented from rotating by the resistance opposed by the extruded material.
At the rear end of the tubular element 23, means are; intended to provide the apparatus with the helical reinforcement element to be incorporated, which will preferably be in the form of a metal spring. This reinforcing element can be made of steel or any other suitable material.
In the drawing, the means for forming the reinforcing element are shown as comprising a table 40 from which the reinforcing element 39 is pulled into the apparatus by the action of the rotating feed members 23, 24. The arrangement is such that the reinforcing element 39 is pulled forward without being rotated and, if necessary, the reinforcing element can be prevented from rotating, even by hand or by any suitable mechanical means. However, in general, the strength of the plastic material into which the reinforcement member is extruded by the nozzle is sufficient to prevent rotation.
Means are also arranged to receive the reinforced tube 41 which is extruded at the front end of the apparatus. In the embodiment shown, these means are shown schematically and include a drum 42, but many other arrangements are possible. Means can be provided for subjecting the extruded tube to any desired treatment to produce hardening of the plastic or for other purposes. For example, the extruded tube can be cooled by a jet of air or water, or it can be passed through a chamber or a chemical treatment bath.
To operate the apparatus, the end of a length of the helical reinforcement member 39 is passed through the posterior end of the tubular member 23 and into the helical passage formed by the thread 25 between the members 23 and 24. The motor 31 is then started to drive the pulley 30 and rotate the elements 23 and 24, and a suitable quantity of plastic material is sent under pressure to the extrusion chamber 7 by means of the device e, the latter. which can take any appropriate form. As a result of the operation of the apparatus, the reinforcing member which exits the helical passage 25 is embedded in the plastic material as it is extruded from the nozzle 37.
Due to the annular shape of the nozzle 37, the material exits therefrom in the form of a non-tube 41 in the walls of which the reinforcing element is completely embedded. The material forming the tube can harden naturally before winding onto the drum 42, which will occur by employing a suitable thermoplastic or thermosetting material.
It can be seen that by means of the above apparatus it is possible to produce a reinforced tube continuously and in lengths which are limited only by the length of the reinforcing element.
Instead of supplying the apparatus with a reinforcing element already formed in a helix, it would be possible to provide this reinforcing element in the form of a straight wire and to provide means for giving this wire the form of a wire. a propeller before it enters the feeder 23.
However, as normal wire-winding machines produce finished spools which must be rotated in order to use the wire, and with the apparatus described and shown the reinforcing member must be provided without appreciable rotation, some Device modifications may be required.
So, instead of providing a supply member which is rotated in a fixed extrusion chamber and a nozzle, the supply member may be fixed and the extrusion chamber or at least its front part which includes the nozzle can be rotated. Appropriate means will have to be provided to supply the plastic material to the rotary extrusion chamber and to prevent leakage of the material out of the chamber through the necessary seals, under the effect of the pressure thereof.
If these conditions are met, such an arrangement can be established which functions satisfactorily, the important point being to ensure the necessary relative rotation between the feed member and at least the part containing the nozzle of the chamber d. The extrusion (includes material extruded therethrough), so that the feed member brings the reinforcing member forward under the desired conditions.
As noted, the strength of the plastic in which the reinforcing member is embedded during extrusion tends to prevent relative rotation between this reinforcing member and the nozzle and the extrusion chamber.
The apparatus described can be used with any suitable materials which are capable of being extruded and which are liable to harden or to be hardened after extrusion.
All such materials are to be considered as included within the designation plastics as employed herein.
However, it is preferable to employ a thermoplastic material which is extruded in the hot state and which automatically hardens during cooling. Particularly satisfactory results are obtained with a synthetic plastic material of the polyvinyl chloride type.
The invention is not limited to the manufacture of tubes of circular section. Tubes and pipes of any desired interior and exterior size and size can be made using a suitably shaped nozzle. The die 6 and the core 35 can, for example, be replaced by others of different size and section.
