<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

IMPROVEMENTS TO COPPER-BASED ALLOYS.
@ The invention relates to copper-based alloys and relates more particularly to alloys capable of being quenched or hardened by a heat treatment and containing small proportions of nickel or chromium, and .de silicon.
Copper-based alloys capable of being heat treated, and containing 0.5-5% nickel, 0.1-1.25% silicon - corresponding to about a quarter of the nickel content -, and possibly also some .proportions of magnesium, have already been proposed and can be quenched or hardened by a heat treatment usually consisting of sudden cooling from 700-90000, followed by aging between, approximately, 4000 and 60,000, but it has been found in In practice, these alloys are difficult to handle or process and give rise to heat treatment failures, resulting in brittleness of the alloy due to the quench or hardener component separating at the grain boundaries.
The main object of the present invention is to eliminate this in-. suitable and provide for the addition of grain refiners to facilitate casting and molding and to provide improved structures.
In accordance with the present invention, µ-based copper alloys suitable for being quenched or hardened by heat treatment comprise copper with nickel or chromium, and silicon, as well as, as grain refiners, cerium and t. niobium, with or without titanium, which has been found to prevent brittleness, thus greatly facilitating heat treatment and improving the grain structure of the product.
In the implementation of the invention, applied to copper alloys containing 0.5 -5% nickel, 0.1-1.35% silicon with or without magnesium, one or the other or them is incorporated. two grain refiner elements cerium or niobium, and optionally titanium, in proportions of between 0.05 and 0.5%, and not only is the casting facilitated and the structure of the products improved as a result of the grain refining action on the alloy, but this has, in particular, the further advantageous property of deoxidizing and purifying the molten metal mass freeing it from oxides and other harmful inclusions.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
it has been found that otherwise these alloys are especially subject to brittleness after heat treatment. when the silicon content is greater than 0.5%, but for example an alloy composed of: silicon 0.9%, nickel 2.6% , the remainder being copper, when it is treated with an addition of 0.25% of cerium or niobium with or without titanium, gives in the state resulting from the heat treatment a tensile strength of 55 kg per mm2 and an elongation of 10%, thus showing that the brittleness has been completely eliminated.
The presence of the additional elements in the proportions indicated does not cause any decrease in the electrical conductivity in the heat-treated alloy, and it should be understood that the normal heat treatment is followed, i.e. that the cast alloy is cooled by immersion from 700-90000. and then artificially aged or precipitation hardened for about 5 hours at 400 -600 C
In the case of forgings, the heat treatment is preceded by hot working at a temperature above 800 C, and the alloy can be cold worked after immersion and before and, or after artificial aging or quenching treatment. by precipitation.
