EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
EMI4.2
cO;::1pa;naient.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

EMI1.1
Mr LCRPHELIN Jean The present invention relates to a balance-motor

whose tilting is actuated by the chcirur and which can be used, among other applications, to achieve: 1) a remote control (operation of a railway switch, opening or closing of a door or valve, for example) -

EMI1.5
4) a movement of 0 ::: permanent low frequency oscillation (usable to actuate a pump for example or for any other application requiring the use of a slow reciprocating movement) The balance-heat engine according to the invention is characterized by the following main points which may exist separately or in combination:
a) It is constituted by an arm oscillating around a median axis and carrying symmetrically two identical closed receptacles, partially filled with a volatile liquid or saturated with a gas at ordinary temperatures and pressure, said receptacles communicating by the intermediary of a symmetrical tube opened in the vicinity of the bottom of each of them, while two symmetrical stops limit the oscillation movement in either direction, so as to bring each of the receptacles alternately in contact with a suitable heat source.
It will be understood that the heating of one of the tanks gives rise to

to be in the latter a pressure which is exerted on the plar. liquid and causes, through the junction tube, the passejo d ', an; part of the liquid in the other tank. An imbalance occurs: which causes tilting and brings the second tank into contact with the corresponding heat source.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
b) The arm runissfnt the two receptacles is formed by the junction tube itself, which has the effect of simplifying the construction of the apparatus.
c) The tank has a heat-insulated internal partition starting from the bottom and extending to above the level of the liquid, in the heating position, without touching the ceiling, so as to isolate a column of liquid, which communicates with the mass by a heat-insulating U-tube, located below the bottom and on which is inserted a coil intended to come into contact with the source of heat.

The invention further comprises other characteristics which emerge both from the description which follows and from the accompanying drawing in which: FIG. 1 is a schematic view showing a balance
EMI2.7
heat engine according to the invention, and Fi. 2 is a similar view showing an improved embodiment of the invention.
EMI2.8
The thermal balancer-motor represented schematically at the Fis. 1 se uo-i2zse of two identical closed reservoirs R.Eg, partially filled with a volatile liquid L or saturated with a gas at normal temperature and pressure. In particular, the liquid may be constituted by a solution of ammonia in water, the dosage of which will be low enough for the assembly to have at atmospheric pressure a temperature of the order of 15 ° C. one will thus be assured, d 'on the one hand, that the Pressure' - inside the tanks will never be excessive and, on the other hand, that the appliance will never be in depression.
These two reservoirs communicate by a tube t whose
EMI2.9
two ends emerge a short distance from the bottom of the chaoun from them, always remaining submerged in the heating position.
The assembly is mounted oscillating by means of a
EMI2.10
appropriate arzefure around a median transverse axis has such that the whole, in the horizontal position, is in unstable equilibrium. Two stops El, B limit the tilting in each
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
direction and each in turn maintain the reservoirs R1 or R2 on the heat sources S1 or S.
When the reservoir R2 (F'ig. 1) is in contact with the heat source S2, the level of the liquid in each of the reservoirs coincides with the planes I. As soon as the temperature rises in the reservoir R2, the pressure at -above the growing water body, which has the effect of pushing back part of the liquid through the tube t into the reservoir R1, When the latter reaches for example the plane II in each of the reservoirs, the moment of the reservoir R1 and of its content takes precedence over that of the reservoir R2 and the assembly tilts to the right. It is stopped by the stop B1 which keeps the reservoir R1 'in contact with the heat source S1. The same process is accomplished in reverse, causing the tilting to the left. And so on.
It is conceivable that it is possible either to use a single source of heat which is automatically displaced so as to be placed at the time of tilting below the lowest tank, or two heat sources of fixed positions, of which one can be interrupted automatically when the corresponding tank is raised. The periodicity adjustment, which depends on the operating manual for the balancer-motor, is carried out by acting on the power of the heating source and on the cooling speed of the unheated tank.
The apparatus which has just been described in its simplest schematic form has the drawback of requiring a relatively large expenditure of calorific energy since a liquid taken very close to the heat source is sent into the upper reservoir. , therefore relatively heated and which consequently entails, at the surface of the liquid which has arrived in the upper reservoir, a pressure-generating vapor pressure opposing the movement of the liquid. The invention provides an embodiment making it possible to remedy this drawback and which is shown schematically in FIG. 2.
In each of the reservoirs R1, R2 is provided a partitioning C1, c2 suitably insulated and extending from the bottom of the reservoir to a sufficient height to exceed the upper body of water 1. Thus is isolated from the rest of the liquid mass a column of liquid which is connected to the latter by a U-shaped tube b1, b2 insulated at d, d2 and comprising a coil sl, s2 on which the heat source S1, S2 acts The position of the coils s1, s2 by in relation to reservoirs R1, R2 is moreover variable. This is how it is possible to arrange them in s'1, s'2 in a position such that each of them comes to be placed alternately in line with the axis of rotation a where a single source is located. heat 3.
The heat source therefore produces the temperature rise only over the small liquid mass contained within the partition. The insulated part of the U-shaped tube is thus protected against the action of the heat source and the junction tube which plunges into the unheated mass sends only cold liquid into the upper tank.
When tilting, the small mass of hot liquid still contained in the central tube flows in the mass and undergoes stirring, so that the small rise in temperature of the assembly can be easily compensated by the loss of heat by radiation.
CHARGING DEVICE.
It is essential for the proper functioning of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the appliance, that it does not contain inert gas, for example air; now the emptying operation, from an industrial point of view, is often difficult and expensive. A particular provision of the invention will overcome this need.
Each of the receptacles R1 R comprises (Fig. 2) an outlet P1 P2 constituted by a tap which also melts a return valve.
EMI4.1
The principle of filling consists simply after having introduced the solvent liquid into one of the in-containers. Troduce the vaporizable liquid in the second and let the air go out through the intake of the first container.
More precisely, and for devices filled with an ammoniacal solution, we will act as follows:
Water containing an anti-corrosive salt in solution is introduced into the reservoir R2, through the outlet P2, then this reservoir is immersed in cooling water, the return valve preventing further introduction of liquid. By taking P1, liquid ammonia is introduced into R1. This will start to boil, will carry with it the interior air and the gases retained on the surface by the sheet, then, in the state of gas, will bubble in the water contained in R2 and will dissolve there but by letting the air or in general the inert gases which
EMI4.2
cO; :: 1pa; born.
It will be checked that the gas evolution exiting through P2 will exit in the form of bubbles, then after a certain time will dissolve in contact with water. The device will then be completely free of all inert gases that it contained.
Subsequently and in the always possible case where any incident would have caused corrosion of the tanks with the release of non-soluble gases, the same purging operation can be carried out to restore the device to its original qualities.
EMI4.3
t: .G; .- It may be advantageous with the same balance to obtain the tilting, flua or less soon Four this will be made use of: an adjustment cup M forming an instability counterweight sliding along a rod F.
The further this mass is from the a axis, the greater will have to be the quantity of liquid which has passed into the upper reservoir to produce the tilting.
It will also be possible to have one or more heat-insulated shells, enveloping the tanks, linked to them or, on the contrary, fixed, so. slow down or speed up heating or cooling in either position.
If we need a movement which is not symmetrical neither in force nor in time, we can insulate the tanks in a different way, at the same time moreover that we will offset the counterweight M by adding to it , for example, an additional mass M 'located outside the axis of symmetry of the device.
It is understood that the thermal balancer which has just been described can have many applications, some of which
EMI4.4
have been listed above.
@ In the case of a remote control, the fact that a very large force may suddenly be available after this force has been accumulated, for example by the electric heating
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
supplied by a relatively low current, advantageously replaces a very complicated servo motor which sometimes requires considerable power supply.
It must be recognized that for this application enre, the device, as it is currently fiur, would be insufficient.
In fact, one is never sure in advance of the momert where the switchover will occur; this is dependent on external circumstances and in particular and more particularly on the temperature,
To overcome this drawback, the remedy is very simple.
The form will be stored, that is to say that the upper reservoir will fill a long time in advance and the tilting, that is to say the putting into action of the force put in reserve, will be triggered only by a small relay.
The latter will be operated either by a special electric line, or by a jump or irregularity in the main current.
A In any case, a switch located on the lever itself will always send current to the heater plug of the lowest reservoir.
In the case of automatic heat control, the apparatus can in particular be used to reverse the directions of the gas streams in industrial gasifier recovery units or blast furnaces. It is in fact known that the burnt gases leaving a gasifier or a blast furnace at very high temperature pass through recovery columns before being subsequently used and leaving almost all of their specific heat there.
Subsequently, it is through this recuperator that the air intended to supply the gasifier or the blast furnace will be passed, so as to bring this air, too, to very high temperature.
The operation of reversing the currents which is done by means of valves is generally done by hand.
In the case at hand, the balance-motor could, on the contrary, be particularly well used since it will be necessary to reverse the currents, that is to say the opening and closing maneuver. closing, when the hot gases coming from the recuperators will exceed a temperature which will prove precisely that these recuperators are already very hot. Each tank will be placed on the passage of the gases leaving or leaving and entering from or into each battery of recuperators.
At that moment, the switchover will take place automatically and at the right time.
By extension, in general, the device according to the invention can be used for any control of an appliance for which a change in temperature or a change in the difference of two temperatures must produce any movement whatsoever (for example. ple and without this list being exhaustive, general or partial changeover, opening or closing of valve, tap, electricity switch, etc.).
The device can also be used to open ventilation or insulating shutters, depending on the outside temperature.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
One of the two tanks will be in the enclosure for which the heat or cold is to be ensured, and the other tank will be outside.
The ventilation or insolation shutters will be open or closed depending on whether it is desired that the heat can enter and not leave or exit and not enter.
The device can also be used as a door closing device in the event of fire or exaggerated temperature rise noted for the closing of fire curtains or the handling of any safety device which requires some effort to get into action.
When the balancer-motor according to the invention will be used to relieve the force necessary to accomplish a determined maneuver, it will also be preferable to have an engagement which will only release the available force at the opportune moment. . among the possible use cases, it is possible to cite: the opening and closing of a door or a shutter and the operation of a freight elevator.
In another order of ideas, the balance-thermal motor according to the invention can be used as an automatic winder of a pendulum, the triggering corresponding to the arrival at the end of travel of one of the weights. or the mainspring.
Finally if we have any source of heat and noted, for example, solar heat, we can arrange the reservoirs in such a way that the one below is always heated by solar heat, while the one which is at the top is on the contrary cooled by a current of air or by water coming from an alcarazas, this alcarazas being moreover initiated to the deactivated according to the tilting position of the device, we thus have available a .importante relative force which can be used to pump for example a liquid; or any other similar application.
Finally the device according to the invention can also be used co.e slow motor continuous operation and will give rise, this title, '- many applications.
