<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The so-called company
FUMIGANTS & INSECTICIDES LIMITED in London E. 16 (England) Method and apparatus relating to fumigation. International Convention: British Patent Application n. 6632 filed on April 11, 1944 by Messrs Norman Victor BARTON and John CHAPMAN, of which the plaintiff is the beneficiary.
The present invention relates to fumigation and provides an improved method and means for fumigating in rooms or other premises of houses or other buildings, for example, hospitals, factories, etc., and in ships, and the following. all these premises will be called rooms.
As a result of prolonged research, thiophosgene (CSC12) has been found to be a powerful fumigant, but it is extremely dangerous to transport and handle. An object of the present invention is to provide a suitable process for producing this compound to 1. ' location where fumigation is to take place.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In accordance with the present invention, heated chloroform vapor is reacted, at the point where the fumigation is to occur, with sulfur dioxide, the product or products of the reaction effecting the fumigation.
Thiophosgene and possibly other toxic gases are produced by the action between the heated vapor of chloroform and sulfur dioxide, with phosgene first being formed from chloroform and this phosgene reacting with sulfur dioxide to form sulfur dioxide. thiophosgene. Although the use of previously formed phosgene, in combination with sulfur dioxide, does not give a powerful fumigating action, the reaction between the chloroform vapor and sulfur dioxide gives a very powerful fumigating action, probably by As a result of the fact that the phosgene produced acts in its nascent state on sulfur dioxide to cause the production of a much larger quantity of thiophosgene and possibly other toxic gases.
The heating of the chloroform is optionally carried out by the heat produced by the combustion of the sulfur, the sulfur dioxide produced reacting with the chloroform.
In order to produce a faster combustion of sulfur it can be "activated" by the addition of potassium nitrate.
It has been found that a mixture comprising approximately 95% sulfur and 5% potassium nitrate is a very satisfactory composition which burns rapidly and evenly.
The proportions can be changed somewhat without affecting the efficiency of the combustion.
It has been found more advantageous to use chloroform
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
not mixed with other substances which produce toxic gases. If desired, however, one or more other vaporizable substances which are capable of producing one or more toxic gases may be mixed with or dissolved in the chloroform. This other substance or these other vaporizable substances are preferably such that their heated vapors react with sulfur dioxide to form thiophosgene; examples of such substances are chloropicrin and carbon tetrachloride which each react, when vaporized and heated, with sulfur dioxide to produce thiophosgene, although to a much smaller extent than chloroform.
The chloroform with or without these additional vaporizable substances is advantageously absorbed in a non-acidic (and preferably inert) absorbent which is not destroyed by the chloroform or the additional vaporizable substance (s) and which has no action. harmful to chloroform or to additional vaporizable substance (s); a similar absorbent is advantageously in the form of talc, chalk or diatomaceous earth, for example kieselguhr.
The chloroform, with / or without the additional vaporizable substance (s), preferably contained in one of the absorbents indicated above, can be used in an apparatus such as that shown in the accompanying drawings, among which:
Figs 1 and 2 are respectively a front perspective view and a perspective view from behind and from below.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The apparatus comprises an upper container 1 and a lower container 2 which are spaced apart from each other.
The two containers are preferably cylindrical in shape, for example about 5 3/4 inches in diameter, and the upper container is about 1.1 inch deep.
The upper container 1 containing the chloroform with or without the additional vaporizable substance (s), preferably absorbed in the above-mentioned absorbent, is preferably sealed and when the apparatus is to be used, one or more holes are drilled. preference in the top of it.,
To produce the hermetically sealed upper container containing the mentioned vaporizable substance (s). this is done with the top or bottom detached from the container, it is filled with the vaporizable substance (s), or these absorbed into the mentioned absorbent, and the top or bottom is then crimped onto the container by embossing.
The top of the container 1 is preferably upwardly domed and the bottom of the container 2 is preferably also upwardly domed for the reason explained below and the wall of the lower container is for example about 2 inches deep. The diameter of the lower vessel is the same as that of the upper vessel and sulfur 9 is placed in the lower vessel 2, which is open at the top to allow heat from the combustion of sulfur to strike vessel 1. Sulfur 9 is provided with a central tubular wick 10 to facilitate its ignition.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In the apparatus used according to the present invention and shown in the drawings, the containers 1 and 2 are kept spaced apart by uprights 3, for example three in number. The uprights 3 are advantageously formed of metal strips, the longitudinal edges of which can be folded or rolled up to reinforce the strips longitudinally, and the upper end of each strip is folded inwards and downwards so as to constitute a form of hook 4 which engages over the upper edge of the container 1, which edge is preferably provided with a bead all around its periphery for this purpose, and in addition each strip has at spaced intervals the tabs 5,
6 and 7 partially detached from the strip and pushed back so that the tabs 5 of the strips engage below the bottom of the container 1, that the other tabs 6 of the strips engage above the upper edge of the container 2 and that the tabs 7 of the bands engage below the lower edge of the container 2. These bands are advantageously arranged so as to advance a short distance below the container 2 so as to form support feet 8 which separate the container 2 of any support on which the apparatus is placed. The bands are spaced substantially equal amounts with respect to each other around the two containers.
Instead of using the bands mentioned, with tabs partially cut therein, strong metal wires can be employed with inwardly extending bends which form stops performing the same function as the tabs.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
These bands or feet are preferably no longer than the diameter of a container. This makes packaging convenient and makes it possible to package the apparatus in boxes which are not excessively large and with the feet placed transversely on top of the packed containers. In this way the bulging of the top of the container 1 and the bottom of the container 2 makes it possible to save space when packing the apparatus for transport, the bottom of the container 2 being placed on the top of the container 1. , the two receptacles therefore fitting into each other. When it is desired to train the apparatus, this is easily done.
If desired, instead of the container 1 being hermetically sealed, it can be provided with a cover which fits over the container in a gas-tight manner and is fully detachable therefrom or can be attached thereto. ci and have a separate opening closed by a removable cap that fits tightly.
Alternatively, in some cases, the top of the container 1 may have one or more small openings closed by an easily fusible material, such as Wood's metal or solder, or a material capable of being broken.
This iron, neture is easily broken when required by the heat and / or pressure of gas or steam developed in vessel 1 when sufficiently heated by the heat generated in vessel 2.
The sulfur 9 is preferably molded as a block in this container.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
If desired, another form of apparatus may be employed, provided that the chloroform (and any other vaporizable substance mixed with it or dissolved in it) is vaporized and brought into contact with sulfur dioxide gas.
Another advantage of the present invention is the greater efficiency of the fumigant compared to that of thiophosgene previously manufactured and used directly; this is due to the fact that the thiophosgene produced in accordance with the present invention is in a heated state, the efficacy of all heated fumigants being greater, as is known, than that of the same ones. agents used in the unheated state.
In addition; as in the method according to the present invention thiophosgene acts on living organisms as soon as it is produced and, being in the nascent state, may therefore be more active, its yield may be greater than that of the thiophosgene prepared previously, for this reason. The fumigant produced according to the present invention may also contain toxic gases, besides thiophosgene, and these may account for the increase in yield compared to the thiophosgene prepared previously. Whatever the season, it has however been found that the fumigant produced according to the invention is much more effective than the thiophhosgene prepared previously.
Another advantage of chloroform amplification is that it does not attack a metal container.
