<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
' Suivant une forme de réalisation particulière, la tige filetée passe à travers la pièce portant la partie mâle et à travers la pièce articulée, de sorte que quand on fait tourner la tige filetée dans un sens, ces deux pièces se rapprochent comme.des mâchoires, entre lesquelles est serrée la partie fe- melle.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY filed in support of a request for B R E V E T D 'I N V E N T 1 0 N "Coupling device for vehicles".
The present invention relates to couplings used for coupling two vehicles and in particular, but not exclusively, a motor vehicle and its trailer. It relates more particularly to improvements to couplings of this type which essentially comprise a part fitted with 'a spherical part (male part) fixed to one of the vehicles and a second part provided with a hollow or cup (female part) capable of conforming to the aforementioned spherical part and fixed to the other vehicle, as well as means allowing the spherical part and the cup to be pressed against each other.
In known couplings of this type, the pressing of the cup against the spherical part is effected by means of a cage outlet subjected to the action of a spring. compression, the tension of which can be adjusted by means of a threaded rod screwed into a gooseneck branch of the part carrying the spherical part. '
These couplings have the drawbacks, apart from their relative complication, in the fact that when the spring is tired, the threaded rod can turn spontaneously as a result of shocks during the journey, which can cause the unintentional uncoupling of the two vehicles.
In addition, the threaded rod must be operated from below, which is not always easy.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate these disadvantages while simplifying the coupling.
To this end, in the coupling device according to the invention, the means allowing the male and female parts to be pressed against each other consist of a part articulated on the part carrying the male part. and members making it possible to press this part against the underside of the female part, after engagement of the first in the second so as to prevent their separation.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the part of the articulated part intended to be pressed against the female part has a depression capable of conforming to the corresponding part thereof.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the members making it possible to press the articulated part between the female part consist of a threaded rod cooperating with the articulated part and the rotation of which in one direction makes it possible to bring the articulated part closer together. 'the female part, while its rotation in the opposite direction has the effect of moving this articulated part away from said female part.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
'In a particular embodiment, the threaded rod passes through the part carrying the male part and through the articulated part, so that when the threaded rod is rotated in one direction, these two parts come together like jaws. , between which the female part is clamped.
The threaded rod will preferably, according to the invention, be subjected to the action of an elastic member, such as a helical compression spring, which, in the active position, tends to bring the two jaws together.
To facilitate the operation of the threaded rod, the latter may, in a manner known per se, be provided with a crank which is made integral with it by being wedged on it or may have been manufactured with it.
In the case where 'this crank is at the upper end of the threaded rod, its free end has a hole in which a pin can slide, at least the upper end of which and, preferably, both. The ends are provided with a stop preventing them from passing through said hole or are widened accordingly.
So that the threaded rod cannot turn more than half a turn when the crank is left to itself, the aforesaid spindle has, according to the invention, a length, such that when the spindle is released, its lower end is placed below the level of the part on the upper face of the part carrying the male part.
Other advantageous features and details of the invention will emerge below during the description of the exemplary embodiment of the coupling device according to the invention illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 of these drawings is a side elevational view of a coupling device according to the invention, after partial breakage and vertical section of certain parts.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the device according to Figure 1, the crank not being shown so as not to complicate the drawing.
On part 1, fixed at 2 for example to a tractor (not shown) and carrying the spherical male part 3, is articulated in a part 5, the end of which 6 remote from the articulation has a capable depression T ' to fit the underside of the bowl 7 of the part 8 attached, for example, to a trailer (not shown). In the bowl 7 is provided an oanal 9 for the evacuation of rainwater. When coupling the vehicles, it is also possible to fill the bowl with grease and this can then pass through channel 9, to lubricate the vacuum of part 5.
To press parts 3 and 7 against each other, after having introduced the first into the second, it suffices to bring part 6 of part 5 against the underside of the bowl 7 by screwing Ta rod 10 in the nut 11 placed in a housing 12 formed in the underside of the part 5. The threaded rod 10 is guided in a tubular bearing 13 formed inside the part 1 and is provided with a crank 14, for example produced with rod 10 and consisting of an arm 15 and a pin 16, the ends of which are widened so that they cannot pass through the hole
17 of the arm 15. In this way, the spindle cannot be lost.
It is clear from Figure 1 that when the spindle 16 is left on its own, its lower end descends next to the part 1 and prevents the threaded rod 10 from making more than one.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
half-turn, so that the rod is automatically locked in this distance.
To counteract the loosening of the threaded rod, there is also provided a compression coil spring 18 which stops, on the one hand, on a collar 19 of the rod. 10 and, on the other hand, on an internal shoulder 20 of the rod. tubular bearing 15, by its tendency to relax, the spring 18 exerts a pressure on the collar 19 and forces a certain friction resistance to be overcome in order to rotate the threaded rod 10. This spring also has the effect of automatically catching the thread. wear of parts 1 and 8 and to make the clamping elastic so as not to prevent the rotation of the spherical part 3 in the cup 7.
The operation of the coupling device is simple -, *
To couple the two vehicles, they are brought together; after having pulled the spindle 16 upwards, the threaded rod is rotated in its nut so as to lower the part 5; then, the spherical part 3 is introduced into the bowl 7 and the part 5 is tilted upwards to bring its part 6 under the opening 7 .. then the threaded rod 10 is rotated in the opposite direction to the previous one, so as to clamp part '3 in the cup 7, Then, we release the pin 16, which. now ensures the locking of the threaded rod 10.
It goes without saying that the present invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiment described and shown and that many modifications can be made to the coupling according to the invention, in particular as regards the shape, the arrangement. and, the constitution of the elements involved in its realization, without departing from the scope of the present application, provided that these changes are not in contradiction with the following claims.
Thus, the parts could occupy a position opposite to that shown in the drawings, the opening of the bowl facing downwards and the spherical part facing upwards. In this case, the shape of the parts could be modified so that part 5 becomes the part intended to be fixed to one of the vehicles, part ¯1 then being articulated on part 5.
Likewise, so that the threaded rod 10 can be operated from the top, the central part of the parts 1 and 5 could be modified, so that the part 5 can act as a clock for the spring 18 and the part 1 can be used to seat the nut 11, the crank being placed in the same position as in Figure 1.
