<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

mice in rotation of the part after molding and hardening Handles concrete, so as to cause the wire to wind all around the crosspiece.
The invention will be explained below by way of example with the aid of the accompanying drawings showing the application of the invention to sleepers for railway tracks.
Figures 1 to 3 show an example of reallcation cross member according to the invention. Figure 1 is an elevational view, Figure 2 a plan view and Figure 3 a cross-sectional view taken along the line A-A of Fig.2.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are detail views of an advantageously suitable hooping: Figure 4 is an elevational view, Figure 5 a section through the line BB and Figure 6 a section through the line CC in Figure 4.
FIG. 7 shows an alternative embodiment of the hooping.
Figures 8, 9 and 10 show how the cross member can possibly be reinforced in line with the rail fastening devices.
FIG. 11 shows by way of example how the rail can be fastened using a sheath allowing the passage of a bolt.
Figures 12 and 13 show by way of example a method of fixing the rail to the cross member combined with a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
device for reinforcing the cross member in the area of the fasteners.
Figures 14 and 15 schematically show an installation that can be used for carrying out the process.
As shown in the accompanying drawings (fig. 1, 2 and 3) the cross member 1 object of the invention has the shape of a prismatic piece of concrete, reinforced or not, rounded at both ends 2 and can be fitted in its part. center of a recess 3.
According to the invention, there is provided on the side faces of the cross member and all around the latter, a groove 4, of suitable width and depth.
This groove receives the successive turns of a steel wire 5 with high elastic limit. By means which will be described below, this wire is wound under tension all around the cross member after execution of the latter by molding the concrete in a suitable formwork. These turns make it possible to ensure the hooping of the cross member in the longitudinal direction and even, where appropriate, in the transverse direction.
The origin 6 and the end 7 of this wire are engaged (fig. 4 and 5) in trapezoidal notches 8 and 9 formed in two box springs 10 and 11 usually made of steel where they are held by the action of wedges 12 and 13 for example in steel. The base 10 is sealed directly in the concrete during the molding of the cross member, while the base 11 is fixed to the base 10 by two screws 14 (fig. 4).
This fixing takes place after placing the origin 6 of the wire 5 constituting the hooping.
The shrinking using turns is preferably carried out by operating in the groove 4 a classification of the son
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
when winding. This classification is generally carried out using combs 15 and perforated strips 16 taking on the teeth of the comb. As emerges from FIG. 6, a first vertical ply of superimposed turns which come into contact with the support 151 of the teeth of the comb is thus produced, and the strips 16 separate this first ply from a second ply. In each vertical ply, the turns are generally joined in pairs, each pair of turns thus formed being dragged between two teeth of the comb.
In this way, the reinforcement can, in case of need, be effectively protected from the action of external corrosion or destruction agents and this by using any protective material 17 , for example cement mortar of suitable quality, fine concrete of suitable grain size, asphalt concrete, etc. (fig. 6) with which the groove is closed. The composition of this protective material will be studied so as to. ensure a negligible shrinkage coefficient and give it the desired compactness by vigorous tightening during its installation.
The threads being well classified and separated from each other, the result is that each thread can be effectively protected.
As shown in FIG. 7, the hooping can also be carried out by placing at the bottom of the groove 4 a single ply of contiguous turns which can be protected from corrosion using any means of protection, for example the use of an oily, bituminous or asphaltic paint, the application of a plastic mastie, the closing of the groove with a cement mortar of suitable quality reinforced with a metal mesh.
The central recess 3 of the crosspiece can be @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
pushed to the vicinity of the support zone of the rails so as to. possibly allow a more efficient ballast jam.
The rails can be fixed to the crossmember by any suitable means, known or not.
One can use for example bolts (not shown) housed in a metal sheath 18 (Fig. 11) incorporated in the concrete during concreting. It is also possible to have recourse to the device of the hardwood dowel housed in the cross member and into which the lag screw of an appropriate known model is screwed.
It is also possible to eliminate the notch inclined at 1/20 shown in FIG. 1 and provide at this location a notched metal base 24 of any type that varies according to the networks (FIGS. 12 and 13). This box spring is sealed in the cross member at the time of molding.
The behavior of the cross member in the area of the fasteners can be improved by providing reinforcement by round reinforcement plies 31 (fig. 8), by helical hoops 32 (fig. 9) or by a section 33 welded to the ducts ( fig. 10).
Figures 12 and 13 show in particular a method of fixing the rail to the cross member combined with the reinforcement of the area of the fasteners by a longitudinal helical hoop.
The rail 23 is then fixed to the bed base 24 using wedges 25, toads 26 and bolts 27 housed in metal sheaths 28. The sheaths 28 and the hoop 29 are fixed to the lower part of the bed base 24 by a few points welding and the assembly 24, 28, 29 is introduced at once in the mold of the cross member in order to be incorporated into the mass of the concrete.
When the cross member is put into service,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
bolts 27 are introduced into their housing 28, the crosspiece then being placed on the field, and when the head 271 of the bolt has come into contact with the bottom of the cavity 30, the latter can be closed using a any protective material, for example a cement mortar or an asphalt concrete so as to avoid the effects of corrosion on the fastening members.
The execution of the cross a. place by molding and clamping the concrete in a suitable formwork using known means. In the mold, we have placed, as already said, the base 10 and possibly the sole 24 (fig. 12) capable of supporting the sheaths 28 and the coil 29. After the concrete has hardened, the cross member is placed (fig. 14). and 15) on a plate 19 with a vertical, horizontal or oblique axis, capable of receiving a rotational movement and carrying for this purpose a toothed ring 191 controlled by means of a motor 20, by means of a reducer 201.
Thanks to the rotation of the plate 19, the wire which unwinds from a drum 21 passing through guide rollers 22 is wound around the concrete part and as it is wound up. place the combs 15 or the strips 16. As already. said, the origin 6 of the wire has been engaged in the base 10 and on this one has fixed the base 11.
The tension to which the wire is subjected results, on the one hand, from the action of the motor torque generated by the motor 20 and, on the other hand, from the reaction produced by an adjustable braking means applied to the shaft of the drum 21.
This means can be for example a Prony brake, 'but it is also possible to have recourse, as shown in FIGS. 14 and lb, to a Noria 34 actuated by a transmission receiving its movement from the drum 21.
It is easily understood that the invention makes it possible to achieve important advantages which can be summarized.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
as following:
1) Thanks to tension hooping, the qualities of the material constituting the cross member are considerably improved and the resistance to repeated forces and vibrations is notably increased.
2) The quality of the concrete is improved thanks to the absence of reinforcements encumbering the mold at the time of concreting.
3) This absence of reinforcements also makes it possible to provide a central recess with a view to possibly reducing the weight of the cross member and to make possible better packing of the ballast under the cross member.
4) As the reinforcement is only rolled up before delivery, it is possible to store only bare concrete sleepers for hardening and thus a reduction in the capital tied up.
It is obvious that the method of manufacture described above is not limited to obtaining sleepers, but that it can possibly be applied with a view to the production of other similar parts in concrete or another. material which must undergo any fatigue and must be given an appropriate length.
