<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Screw tap.
Valves whose shutter is held in the closed position by means of a screw rod and which are exposed to considerable pressure, do not always ensure a tight closure when subjected to vibrations. Under the influence of vibrations and pressure the screw rod loosens in a short time, so that the valve accidentally opens. It has been found that this accidental loosening of the screw rod depends on the fact that the outer end of the latter starts to oscillate sideways under the influence of vibrations, while the threaded part of the screw rod forms the center of the rod. 'oscillation.
The present invention relates to a device for such taps, which serves to prevent oscillation of the screw rod and accidental opening of the tap under the influence of vibrations. For this purpose, the device according to the invention is characterized by a support means, supported by the valve plug, surrounding the screw rod in the vicinity of its outer end and coming radially into contact with the screw rod, thus preventing the outer end of the latter to oscillate laterally with respect to 1'.other part of the valve.
The accompanying drawing represents an embodiment of the invention. The figure of the drawing shows in longitudinal section a diaphragm valve for gas containers, executed in accordance with the present invention.
The valve plug 1 shown in the drawing is provided with an inlet and an outlet, 2 and 3, respectively, as well as a shutter seat 4, against which a metal diaphragm acting as a shutter, can be pressed by means of a screw rod 6 and a clamping button or push button 7, connected to said rod. The screw rod 6 is screwed into a nut 8, screwed in turn into the valve plug 1, so as to fix the metal diaphragm by its periphery.
A bearing sleeve 9, surrounding the screw rod 6, is screwed into the nut 8, The outer end of the bearing sleeve is provided with an inner annular part which comes into contact with the screw rod at a considerable distance from the threaded part of the latter. On the outside, the support sleeve has a conical surface, on which a conical seating surface of a tightening nut 10 is screwed onto the support sleeve. The outer end of the support sleeve has, at its threaded portion receiving the tightening nut 10, four slots 11 arranged at a distance.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
this equals one another and passes radially through the wall of the support sleeve.
The outer end of the support sleeve is thus formed by four tabs which can be pressed, by means of the tightening nut, against the screw rod. The support sleeve can also be executed in the form of a stuffing box. A handle 12 is rigidly fixed to the screw rod 6.
By screwing the clamping nut 10 down, so that the support sleeve 9 rests with suitable friction, without excessive pressure, against the screw rod, the latter is prevented from oscillating sideways and unscrewing. when for some reason the shutter is exposed to vibration. Even in the case where the valve is placed on a pressure tank and a considerable pressure acts on the diaphragm 5, when the valve is closed, vibrations of the tank provided with the valve cannot cause accidental opening of the latter.
Practical tests have shown that, in the case where: a valve of the construction shown in the drawing and mounted on a pressure tank, - but without the tightening nut and the support sleeve coming into radial contact with the threaded rod, is tightened in the usual manner and is exposed, in a specific type of testing machine, to vibrations, the screw rod loosens, so that the valve opens after 1 minute and 129 oscillations.
When the screw rod is firmly tightened in the closed position, the valve opens after 2 minutes and 258 oscillations. On the other hand, with a valve fitted with a support means for the screw rod according to the drawing, the valve was still closed after 4 hours and 50,960 oscillations. Thus, an extremely important result can be obtained with the device according to the invention, without complicating the construction of the valve.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment described and shown, since the latter can be varied or changed within the scope of the invention. Any means producing the same effect as the support sleeve can be attached directly to the valve plug. The tightening nut may be non-threaded and be executed in the form of a ring, and it may be subjected by means of a shoulder provided on the screw rod or on the handle, possibly with the interposition of an elastic washer, to an axial displacement when the screw rod is screwed in the closed position, so that the support sleeve makes good radial contact on the screw rod. Said ring can also form part of the screw rod or of the handle.
The device according to the invention can be used on any type of screw valve construction, therefore also in combination with valves the shutter of which is not constituted by a diaphragm.
