<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La fig. 1 montre, en coupe, l'organisation générale d'un dispositif de chauffage par induction;
La fig. 2 est une vue en élévation et la fig. 3 une vue en plan d'une installation d@étirage à chaud utilisant le dispositif de la fig. 1;
La fig. 4 montre, en plan, une installation d'étirage à froid dans le cas du travail "à creux" ou sur mandrin court;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
1 / la vitesse de passage des produits à travers le dispo- sitif de chauffage;

"Improvements to processes and installations for drawing, in particular for that of steel tubes",
The drawing of tubes, whether done hot or cold, always requires reheating the metal to a temperature of around 900 @ to 1000.
In the case of hot drawing, this reheating takes place before passing through the die to facilitate the flow of the metal. In order to eliminate strain hardening, it takes place on the contrary after drawing, when the deformation is carried out cold.
In both cases, the metal is usually heated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
- possibly in furnaces heated electrically or by solid, liquid or gaseous fuels.
These ovens are still important constructions because of the great length of the products to be treated and they present a considerable calorific inertia; their warming up is therefore long and expensive; moreover, the regularity of the heating obtained is uncertain.
On the other hand, in such furnaces, even when the laboratory is at the right temperature, the heating of the load is always slow and a significant oxidation results therefrom, hence loss of metal and the obligation to re-pickle the materials. products before re-stretching.
There are so-called "blano annealing" furnaces which allow heating without oxidation, but these furnaces have an even greater calorific inertia than those with direct heating and their construction is very expensive.
In addition, due to the discontinuity of operations, the products currently in use require a considerable amount of labor.
From the foregoing, it can be seen that the current technique of stretching has multiple drawbacks; The object of the present invention is an improved method and installation which make it possible to remedy to a considerable extent the aforementioned drawbacks.
The improved process is essentially characterized by the application, in the normal circuit of the tubes, of an ultra-rapid heating device, possibly completed by a cooling chamber filled with neutral or reducing gas.
The ultra-fast heating device can use any device making it possible to obtain very high temperatures and, in particular, the oxyacetylene or oxidic torch, the atomic hydrogen torch, aro voltaic, etc.
Resistance heating can also be used, by passing low voltage and very high current into the same metal. The current is then brought by appropriate wipers.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
-priés or by two, four or six pairs of rollers rolling on the tube.
The process which is the object of the present invention consists in using high frequency alternating current to produce the desired temperature rise rapidly and with a bulk reduced to the strict minimum.
The high frequency current sent through a solenoid, surrounding, without touching it, the metallic object to be treated allows, when this frequency is sufficiently high and exceeds 100,000 periods, to obtain the rise in temperature almost instantaneous and over a very small space, consequently, space which is of the order of one sixth, at most, of that which is necessary for heating by the means currently employed.
It should be noted that, due to the absence of contact between the devices which supply the current and the metal to be heated, the speed of advance of said metal can be given a very high value and thus increase the speed of. the operation and the tonnage reheated at the same time.
In addition, this process offers the advantage that it makes it possible to carry out the heating on the same bench where the drawing is carried out, which further reduces the overall size of the installation.
In the attached drawing, there is shown in a completely schematic manner examples of embodiments of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, in section, the general organization of an induction heating device;
Fig. 2 is an elevational view and FIG. 3 is a plan view of a hot drawing installation using the device of FIG. 1;
Fig. 4 shows, in plan, a cold drawing installation in the case of "hollow" work or on a short mandrel;
Fig. 5 shows, on a larger scale, the detail of a heating device used in the installation of FIG. 4; @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Fig. 6, finally, is a plan view of an installation for cold drawing on a long mandrel.
Fig. 1 shows schematically and by way of example 1 induction heating installation produced in a known manner with an adenoid 1 consisting of a copper tube, adenoid whose axis coincides with that of the tube to be heated, the solenoid being traversed by the alternating current and being cooled by a current of any fluid.
The aforementioned solenoid is mounted so that it is free to move perpendicular to the axis of the tube to be treated in the event that the latter is not perfectly rectilinear; that this displacement is made possible, the current is brought to the solenoid by flexible conductors. It is therefore the tube 2 being heated which will guide the solenoid. So that there can be no contact between the two parts, between the adenoid and the tube guides 3 are interposed in one or more parts made of an insulating material and re-heating at high temperature (fused silica, for example). Stops 4 of insulating and refractory material are held by supports 5 and are placed on either side of the solenoid so that the latter cannot move longitudinally.
If the heating system which has just been described is placed in front of a die 6, it is quite certain that an ideal chhud drawing installation will have been constituted. In fact, the heating being very fast, the oxidation will be very low and it can even be reduced by introducing an inert or reducing gas into the solenoid; the products obtained will therefore not be scratched, as very often happens when ordinary ovens are used; moreover, the branches will last much longer.
As this heating system has virtually no calorific inertia, it allows you to stretch at any time, without having to take into account the heating time of the furnace or the resulting fuel expenditure, - as is currently the case. On the other hand, it should be noted that the high frequency induction heating allows the length of the device to be considerably reduced.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
reheating, This is particularly useful when stretching small amounts of products.
In the hot drawing installation using the apparatus just described and shown in figs. 2 and 3, the tube 2 being drawn is pulled at a uniform speed, by means of a suitable mechanism 9, through the adenoid 1 and therefore heats up in a regular manner. The section reduction is also done regularly, which does not always take place at present, due to the difficulty of obtaining a uniform temperature over the entire length of the furnaces? used.
Easily removable rollers 10, controlled by a variable speed motor 11, cause the tube to be drawn 2 'as it passes from its front end through the heater.
It is obvious that the speeds of the tubes 2 and 2 'must be proportional so that the temperature of the front of the tube is the same as that of the other parts.
On figs 2 and 3, the arrows indicate the path followed by the tubes during work; the tubes to be drawn are placed at A and the finished tubes are received at B.
With regard to cold drawing, a distinction must be made between the case of "hollow" or short mandrel work and the case of long mandrel work.
In "hollow" work or on a short mandrel (fig.4), the tubes t, after drawing on the bed 12, are ejected into the channel 13, then automatically introduced into the straightening machine or straightening machine 14. This one is preferably of the hyperboloid type of revolution.
At the outlet of the straightener is the heating device 15 possibly supplemented by a cooling chamber 16, a device shown schematically and by way of example in FIG. 5.
Two rollers 17 controlled by a variable speed motor drive the tubes in the gutter 18 at the speed of the straightening machine, as soon as the latter is no longer involved.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
EMI6.1
- - - --- -
From the gutter 18, the products are ejected into cradles by any device.
The aforementioned assembly 15 is substantially identical to that shown in FIG. 1, but it comprises fixed inlet and outlet guides (19 and 20) of non-magnetic metal placed at a sufficient distance from the ends of the solenoid.
As in the embodiment described above, the solenoid is supplied with current by flexible cables and it can therefore move transversely, while it is stopped longitudinally by the parts forming stops.
If it is desired to obtain annealing without oxidation, the device 15 is extended by an enclosure 16 cooled by a fluid circulating between two concentric tubes 21 and 21 '. This chamber is filled with a neutral or reducing gas slightly under pressure, led by line 22.
At the outlet of the enclosure 16, a specially designed guide 23 prevents whipping of the tubes during their rotation.
In the case of drawing on a long mandrel (fig. 6), the tubes t, after their drawing on the bed 25, are ejected into the gutter 26, then introduced into the rolling machine 27, which, by lengthening the metal transversely tubes, allows them to be peeled off the mandrels. The tubes are received on the cradle 28, then sent to the bench 29 on which the demandrating is then carried out.
The mandrels m are then directed towards the drawing bench, while the tubes t are conveyed over a channel 30, from which two rollers 31, controlled by a variable speed motor, push them through a device 15-16 , identical to that of FIG. 5.
At the exit of this device, two other rollers 32, controlled at the same speed as the rollers 31, discharge the finished products onto a chute 33 from where they are ejected into cradles B for their recovery by the overhead crane.
From the foregoing, it can easily be seen that installations such as those shown in FIGS. 2, 3, 4, and 6 allow:
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
a) to eliminate the reheating and annealing furnaces whose temperature setting is very slow and which give a regular and oxidizing ir heating; b) improve the appearance and quality of the products obtained; c) reduce metal consumption; d) reduce labor costs; e) to eliminate the pickling operations between the various cold drawing passes; f) significantly reduce acid consumption; g) to obtain a very great flexibility in the work.
The examples which have just been described and which relate to steel tubes are in no way limiting. The improved methods and installations according to the invention can very well be applied to all cases of hot or cold drawing or profiling of any metal, the deformation tools possibly being dies or molds. cylinders. All these applications come within the scope of the present invention when the installation comprises a device for ultra-rapid heating of the treated product, a device which can, in certain cases, be combined with a cooling chamber.
The invention can also be applied to any installation, continuous, semi-continuous or discontinuous, for example, to the hot and cold drawing of wires of all metals, to the manufacture of profiles from of strip, cold rolling of strip, etc ... etc ..
It should be noted, moreover, that in each application, there are two constants to consider, namely:
1 / the speed of passage of the products through the heating device;
2 / the heating temperature.
It will therefore be necessary for the heat energy released, in devices identical to device 15, either by gas combustion or by electric currents, to be sufficient so that the constants do not have to be reduced.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
If necessary, pn can place two or three heaters one after the other.
