Method and installation for manufacturing a tube from a metal strip. The present invention relates to the manufacture of tubes from a strip of metal.
In this manufacture, the strip material is usually in the form of a coil of which it is, drawn by a longitudinal movement through a tube mill which shapes it into a hollow shape in section. This profile of hollow cross section is then passed through a welding or brazing zone, in order to heat it so as to bring the edges together. The actual meeting of the edges can occur after a slight cooling of the profile from the maximum temperature reached in the welding or brazing zone, and such cooling can be carried out. when the profile leaves this area.
These operations are carried out while the tube is animated by a longitudinal movement substantially reg-Lilier and continuous. After the tube has been welded or brazed, and while it is still in a hot state, it must be cooled slowly enough to give the metal the desired water resistance. This is especially the case when the strip metal is steel and the strip has been heated sufficiently for hot solder.
During this continuous manufacture of the tube at a speed which can be considered high, the tube moves through any suitable cooling device at the same speed as it is made, and it is. necessary, to ensure its cooling. suitable, that this cooling device can receive and contain a suitable length of tube. In fact, one of the main difficulties encountered in the continuous manufacture of tubes at high speed lies in the need to provide a cooler of sufficient length, as well as in the resulting obligation to have an installation or a building. . long enough to accommodate a chiller of the correct length.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a tube from a strip of metal which is moved in the longitudinal direction, which is closed by approaching its edges and which is moved in a zone of heating to bring together the edges and form a sealed tube, characterized by the fact that: the tube is passed in motion, at its exit from the. clia.uf- fage area, in a cooler giving it. the. in the form of a helix with multiple turns, and in that it is straightened at its exit from said cooler.
It also has for object. an installation polishing the implementation of the method according to the invention, characterized in that it comprises a rolling mill. tube for driving a strip of metal longitudinally and shaping it to give it the shape of a tube, a heater located downstream of the rolling mill to heat the strip and join the longitudinal edges thereof, a drum located downstream of the heater with its axis arranged transversely to the direction of movement of the tube, means for rotating the drum so that the tube winds around it, means located downstream of the drum,
for pulling the tube and straightening it tight, and means for cooling the tube while it is wound on the drum.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of an installation specific to the implementation of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic view of an installation for manufacturing the tubes in accordance with. the invention, this figure showing the tube rolling mill, the welding or brazing furnace and the cooler.
Fig. ? is an enlarged cross section of part of the cooler and shows the tube as it enters the cooler.
Fig. 3 is a cross section similar to FIG. \ ?, but represents the tube as it exits the cooler.
Fig. 4 is a section through line 4 --- 4 of FIG. 2 and shows a device which can be used to engage the tube in the cooler.
Fig. 5 is a cross section of the cooler and shows the drum thereof. apparatus in elevation, but with tears and partial cuts.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view, partly in section, of the drum, and shows the arrangement provided for the inlet and outlet of the coolant liquid.
The fi-. 7 is a view of the cooler ob served in the direction of arrows 7-7 of FIG. 5, with partial tears and cut to show the. structure of the drum and its housing.
Fig. 8 is a partial plan view of the upper part of the drum, viewed in the direction of arrows 8-8 of FIG. 5, this figure showing the inlet and the various outlets of the tube.
As shown in fig. 1, the metal strip 1 can be pulled and unwound from a feed coil 2 and led through a tube rolling mill, which is provided with suitable shaping rollers 3, so that the strip is formed into a tube, as shown in T.
The tube can then pass through a suitable welding device, shown schematically at -1. This apparatus may be one of those used for butt welding. of the edges of the strip and in which the entire body of the formed tube is. normally heated to welding temperature; or it may consist of an oven to raise the. temperature to a value suitable for the edges in contact with the tube to be joined by brazing with copper. A non-oxidizing or reducing atmosphere can be introduced into the furnace through a pipe 5.
The particular construction of the soldering or brazing apparatus may vary, but the cooler is most useful in the case of a probe or furnace which heats the entire tube. Leaving. the welding or brazing zone 4, the tube can pass inside a guide pipe 6 and enter the cooler, the whole of which is indicated at 7 and in which a great length of the tube is concentrated and cooled and, after cooling, the tube can leave the cooler and it can be pulled by 8 pull rollers.
As indicated in the fi, -. 7, the cooler comprises an outer casing or casing 10, which can advantageously be established in four segments assembled according to the various joints indicated at 17. The casing is. stationary and supported by a suitable sloping frame or chariot, indicated as a whole at 12.
The housing is preferably made of a cast metal, such as cast steel or cast iron, and has a wall of suitable thickness. The interior surface of this housing has a helical groove, as indicated at 14, in FIG. 5, and the turns of which are spaced and separated by a helical baffle wall 15. At the entrance, the housing is provided with a wise bos 16 which can receive a guide tube 17 intended for. be connected to the guide pipe 6 (fig. 1). Across the upper part of the drum extends a part 20 which is pierced with a series of openings 21, each of which is aligned with one of the turns of the groove 14.
The openings 21 can be closed by a transparent part, such as a refractory glass plate, held in place by a frame or frame 23 which can. be bolted on part 20, as indicated in.?4- (fi (, -. 8). Thus, as can be seen from fig. 8, the first tube is visible through the openings 21.
From part 20 start a series of outlet pipes, indicated in a, b, c, d and e (fig. 8), (can it be closed with the help of caps? ) or provided with a tubular nozzle or outlet guide, 26, the role of which will emerge from the following.
The housing is closed at. its ends opposite by plates 28 and? 9, so that a substantially gas-tight enclosure is obtained, and when the apparatus is in operation, a suitable gas can be introduced into this enclosure via an inlet pipe 31 nable which can be burnt at its outlet from an exhaust pipe 3'3 which can be r.e- corded to the lower part of the housing, as shown in fig. 5. This gas can. be a suitable non-oxidizing or reducing gas.
In the housing 10 is mounted a drum, indicated as a whole at 40. This drum is circular in cross section and the diameter of its outer wall 4-1 decreases from one end of the drum to the other, which thus presents the diameter. shape of a truncated cone. The drum is fitted very precisely in the inner surface of the housing which also has a frustoconical shape, as seen in fig. 5.
The grooves 14 therefore constitute free spaces with respect to the drum, while the intermediate partitions or baffles 15 terminate. in the immediate vicinity of the drum, so that each of these free spaces is. in principle isolated from the two adjacent clearances. The drum is closed by end walls or funds 42 and 43, so as to provide a fluid-tight capacity; these funds being provided with pins -14 and -15 which pass through the end plates or plate 28 and. 29 of the housing.
These journals are suitably supported so as to be able to rotate, by bearings 46 mounted on the support 1 ?. One of these journals is provided with suitable means, such as a chain pinion -17, with the aid of which the drum can be driven in rotation. Suitable seals or gaskets 48 are provided between the journals and the walls 28 and 29 of the housing to prevent the escape of gas entering this housing.
A refrigerant, such as water, is introduced into the drum and, for this purpose, the journal 45 (fig. 6) is hollow, and traversed by a body .50 pierced with three conduits 51, 52 and 53. The cooling water can be ad put by a pipe 54 connected to the body 50, the arrangement being such that this water passes through the pipe 51 and enters a pipe 55 which extends inside the drum, as shown in Fig. 5.
Water has to circulate in the drum and it is. provided for this purpose an outlet tube 56, which may be flexible, and which is connected to the duct 53 of the body 50, its lower end being bent downwards to terminate at a suitable distance above the lower part of the drum . The water leaving the drum passes through the pipe 53 and through a discharge pipe 57. Pressurized air can be introduced into the drum through a pipe 58 connected to the pipe 52 of the body 50.
The interior of the drum is preferably provided with a series of baffles 60 which s 'extend in the longitudinal direction of the drum, and preferably from bottom to bottom, and protrude. inwards from the frustoconical wall. 11. When the drum rotates, the baffles 60 pass. in the water which accumulates in the lower part of the drum, as shown in IV in fig. 7. These baffles stir the water and are preferably pierced with holes 61., so as to allow some of this water to flow through them. The water or other coolant can be kept in the drum up to the level of the inlet of the tube 56. This level can vary between certain limits, as the drum rotates and agitates the water.
The drum is gas-tight and air is trapped in the capacity of the drum above the water level. The air introduced under a suitable pressure into the drum through the tube 58 causes the water to rise in the hanging end of the tube 56. This air pressure has the effect of raising the water to evacuate it but , once the water flow has started, it can continue with a siphon action. In addition, one can say to think, under certain conditions, to introduce air, being. given that the pressure of the water introduced by the pipe 55 may be sufficient. In any case, the water is agitated by the rotation of the drum and the latter is thereby cooled almost uniformly.
A straightening device may be provided to straighten the tube when it leaves the drum. Such a device can be placed in the opening 21 of the chosen outlet pipe. This device comprises a body 80 which fits into any one of the openings 21 and which can be held in place by the cover 23, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 7. The body 80 carries the straightening roller 81 freely rotating and an adjustable guide pad 82. The formed tube passes under the roller and over the underlying surface of the guide pad, which straightens it by eliminating the curvature. that the drum may tend to give it.
The position of the guide pad can be adjusted using an adjusting screw 83, so as to achieve the desired straightening action.
To carry out the initial insertion of the tube into the cooler, the assembly of the frame 23 and the transparent plate 22 can be removed, so as to release and allow the drum to be seen, and a small device such as that shown in FIGS. 2 and 4. This device comprises a body 65 which can be inserted through any one of the conduits or openings 21, as seen in FIG. 2, and. which carries rollers 66 intended to come into contact with the tube. This guide can be pushed against the tube by hand, using a handle 67.
At the moment when the tube enters the drum, the worker can push the guide 65 downwards to oblige the tube to be joined by friction with the drum, which causes it to be regularly driven by the rotation of the drum. Of course, after the tube has been properly engaged in the drum, the guide is removed and the shutter assembly 22-23 is replaced.
As the tube enters the cooler, its leading, or leading, end passes from the guide tube 17 into the inlet end of the helical groove 14 and, as the drum rotates, this end follows the helical groove 14. , and the tube is wound helically on the drum.
As shown in fig. 5 and. 8, the tube can be pulled out from the drum through any one of the outlet pipes a. h, c, d. summer. If it is desired to take advantage of the total capacity of the drum, the tube is made to exit through the last nozzle e. By choosing any of the other tubes, the degree of cooling can be reduced as needed.
Such a choice will depend on the temperature of the tube as it enters the cooler, and the temperature it should. as it exits the cooler, the speed of movement of the tube, the mass of metal in the tube, and other factors.
The tube having been engaged in the cooler and the machine being in action, the drum operates in principle in synchronism with the tube rolling mill and with the traction rollers 8, although these can rotate at a speed slightly higher to keep the tube under tension. By way of schematic illustration of a control mechanism, there is shown at. the fia. 1 a motor 70 which, by means of a reduction mechanism 71, drives a tube rolling mill by means of a chain 72.
From the reduction gear 71 starts a shaft 73 which drives a speed variator 74 which controls, via a chain 75, the chain sprocket 47 of the drum to drive this. latest. The shaft 73 is extended to another speed variator 75 which, by a chain 76, drives the last traction rollers 8. It is understood that the rollers of the tube rolling mill can be actuated in whole, or in part. and that, for this purpose, these organs can be coupled to one another by appropriate mechanisms (not shown).
The non-oxidizing or reducing gas enters and circulates inside the crankcase while maintaining. thus the tube in a desired atmosphere, and the cooling water passes inside the drum in the manner previously described. It can be seen, therefore, that a great length of tube is concentrated in a compact form, in particular in the form of a helix wound on the drum. Each of the turns of the propeller is separated from the adjacent turns by virtue of the groove or groove in the housing, which almost completely prevents any transmission of heat by radiation between the turns. The friction factor is considerably reduced compared to that which would occur if the tube were straight.
This results from the fact that the drum rotates, so that there is virtually no friction, although some lateral thrust may be exerted by the tube on the flanks of the grooves. The conical shape of the drum and the housing has the effect of allowing the contraction to which the tube is subjected when it cools.
One realizes that the conical shape with rectilinear generatrix, as in the arrangement shown, does not correspond exactly to the curve representing the shortening undergone by the tube during its cooling, but it seems that it is preferable to adopt a com promised by the application of a rectilinear generatrix which, considered in its total length, approximately conforms to the general contraction curve of the tube.
