<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Process for the manufacture of artificial threads by using polymerization products of homologous acrylic acid or functional derivatives of these homologs, according to the dry spinning process",
From German patent 700 006 / 29b it is known to use polymerisates or polymerization products of homologs of acrylic acid or of functional derivatives of these homologues or of mixtures of these polymers, with or without the addition of organic substances for the manufacture of artificial threads. This can be accomplished by forcing or extruding the solutions or melts of these substances through narrow openings and causing the strands to set by evaporation or volatilization of the solvent.
By working according to this process, certain faults have been observed with respect to the spinning operation and the quality of the yarns obtained, and the object of the present invention is to eliminate
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
these flaws.
In carrying out large-scale spinning tests of this type, difficulties have always been encountered which are expressed in the fact that at the start of spinning the threads of the solution returned through the openings of the screen or The die could not, in most cases, be made into the form of threads, but came together as a result of particular ratios of the surface tension along: The strainer. In such a case, there is nothing left to do but to change the strainer.
However, it has been observed, according to the invention, that its difficulties can be overcome by moistening the strainer, at the start of spinning, with water or other liquids favorably influencing the surface tension ratio, such as, for example, glycerin, glycol etc. in aqueous solution, for example by soaking the strainer in water for a short time. In this case, there is no confluence of the solution streams. Even when, without wetting the strainer, a confluence of the threads has already occurred, it is possible to cause an irreproachable priming of the threading of the threads by wetting the strainer afterwards.
Tests have shown that this process can be advantageously modified by not spinning from top to bottom, but on the contrary from bottom to top. It is thus possible, according to the invention, to be able to transform the wetting of the strainer, which has been found to be favorable, into a permanent arrangement. This is achieved by covering the surface of the strainer permanently with a layer so thin that diffusion of the solvent into the liquid practically does not occur, but hardening of the wires by volatilization of the solvent, as occurs in - stated above, takes place in air or in a gas.
It has furthermore been discovered that yarns consisting of the above substances, having properties of a particularly high value, can be obtained by subjecting them to a subsequent more or less intense drawing. This operates, as has been determined experimentally, an increase in resistance.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Break strength of up to twentyfold and more together with an increase in elongation and, surprisingly, further, a significant decrease in heat stretch.
Thus, unstretched yarns are subjected to being subjected to a continuous load for 5 minutes, such as, for example, 2 gr. at 100, plastic strain as 128% elongation, while the same yarns, which were subjected to 350% stretch, only experienced 25% elongation.
The drawing device consists, as usual, either of fixed yarn guides, arranged in a zigzag fashion, or of two or more; two rollers, which rotate at different speeds and around which the bundle of fibers is driven. It is also possible, with such a good effect, to use conical rollers which are suitably arranged.
The drawing itself takes place either in air, since the threads still have sufficient pliability immediately after their coagulation, or in baths, possibly heated.
The latter method of stretching is more easily influenced, since, by the choice of temperature, the desired plasticity and hence also the possibility of stretching can be obtained in advance.
Example of realization.
1. A 30% acetone solution of a mixture of 95 parts of methyl methacrylate and 5 parts of dibutyl ester of phthalic acid is pumped out, using a spinning pump and through a spinning strainer with 20 holes of 0.1 mm in diameter and moistened with water beforehand, in a spinning pipe filled with flowing air and, from there, is guided with the help of thread guides (small rollers ) around two rollers (pancakes) rotating at different speeds and placed in a water bath heated to 70. The yarns thus stretched then arrive at the winding device. The forward speed during a test was 1.75 gr. of solution per minute; the speed of the first,. roll, 7 m / min. ; that of the second-; 20 m / min.
Stretched wires
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in this way 400% stood out for their remarkable solidity. This, measured on the individual fibers, amounts to
400 g / 100 den. and more. The strength of the unstretched fibers varied, in comparison, between 30-50 g / 100 den. The elongation decreased from 2.3% to 11% as a result of stretching.
2. A 25% acetone solution of a mixed polymerizate of
65 parts of methyl methacrylate and 35 parts of acrylate (of methyl or vinyl acetate is spun in air at 35 using an upright strainer (i.e. straight and diri - gée upwards) with 20 holes 0.2 mm in diameter, covered with a layer of water 5 mm thick, and is then conducted as shown in Example 1, using yarn guide, to the cake drawing apparatus, where it is subjected to a subsequent drawing of 400% in hot water at 70. In this way, too, fibers are obtained whose resistance to the breakage amounts to several hundred grams per 100 denier.
