<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
REVENDICATIONS.

The present invention relates to a process for treating continuous filament yarns and more particularly to a simplified economical process for preparing bulky yarns composed of individually wound synthetic filaments.
A new fancy or worked yarn has recently been launched on the market This product is made up of several practically continuous filaments individually wound up The individual filaments have turns, loops and convolutions which are distributed at anarchic intervals along these filaments . It is possible to make with these yarns fabrics which are characterized by a softer feel, a warmer character and an increased volume.
A suitable process for preparing such yarns from bundles of synthetic filaments which may or may not be twisted is disclosed in Principal Patent No. 520,934. In a preferred variant of this process, a bundle of continuous filaments is introduced into a current of a fluid, preferably air, and subjected to its action. The individual filaments of the bundle are separated from each other and thrown violently by the action of the fluid, while they are still separated, and are collected and then united into a wire by withdrawing them at a speed lower than the feed speed of the filament bundle This process is very satisfactory for most fibers, especially if air is used as the fluid.
However, it has been found that in order to obtain stable bulky yarns of this type from synthetic hydrophobic fibers, it is desirable to resort to one or more of the following measures: a) subjecting to the process a yarn having a more or less twist. pronounced; b) then imparting twist to the yarn; c) apply adhesive gums; d) using relatively high air pressures in order to form the twisted variety of the yarn.
All these measures are undesirable from an economic or technical point of view.
It has been found that it is possible to produce voluminous, softer and more uniform yarns which have loops and other convolutions, from synthetic hydrophobic filaments, in a simpler and more economical manner. if the process of the main patent is applied to the yarn or bundle of filaments, in a wet state; Preferably, a film of water is applied to the yarns or bundle of filaments immediately before or during their passage through the high speed air stream.
As indicated, the new process of the present invention offers a particular advantage with multifilament yarns, of synthetic hydrophobic filaments which may have low twist, for example less than three turns per inch (25.4 mm). or hardly any twist. Although any inert liquid can be used to wet the yarn, water is the preferred agent. Unlike the principal patent process, satisfactory results can be obtained with hydrophobic synthetic fibers by applying over the wire air pressures of as little as 20 to 40 pounds per square inch (1.41 to 2981 kg / cm). in the form of a suitable jet, for example as described in previous patents of the Applicant.
The new process also applies to that which is the subject of Belgian patent n 55700200
The authors of French patent No. 101000529 have already discussed the effect of humidity on rayon subjected to a draft. They found that humidity has no appreciable effect on the process or on the quality of the product obtained, although they observed that it is possible to ob-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
hold a slightly higher number of loops with wet filamentso However, their observations apply mainly to rayon and probably apply to other hydrophilic fibers.
The elongation and other physical properties of hydrophobic fibers are obviously not significantly altered by the presence of water, as is the case with hydrophilic fibers like rayon. In the presence of this state of the art. - that, it is very surprising and unexpected that the process of the main patent can be carried out more conveniently and economically and that the products are of a much better quality when the process is applied to synthetic hydrophobic fibers humido
The new process of the present invention is more particularly applicable to the working of synthetic filament yarns with a smooth surface obtained by a spinning process in the molten state, such as nylon or Dacron polyester yarn.
The invention is not, however, limited to these specific yarns, and other yarns which may be used are synthetic hydrophobic filaments made from acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, as well as those made from vinyl polymers and copolymers and vinylidnics
The stability of the worked yarn or fancy yarn obtained is measured by the relative modification of the permanent elongation of the worked yarn after specific load conditions The stability test has proved to be a reliable means of characterizing the worked yarns . This test is carried out as follows: 1 meter of worked yarn is measured under a tension of approximately 0.01 g per denier worked and the yarn is then subjected to a load of 0.5 g per denier for 10 seconds.
The weight is then removed leaving a tension of 0.01 g per denier and the length again measured. Its difference between the initial and final measured lengths represents the permanent elongation and this value expressed as a percentage of the initial measured length, is a measure of stability. A centimeter scale mounted at the bottom of the stability tester makes a direct reading of the stability possible.
A stability of about 2.5% or less is usually regarded as a condition for the formation of uniform and satisfactory textile fabrics. With a stability value of up to 4 or 5%, some of the turns, loops and convolutions may disappear during the manufacture of the fabric of the low-twist fancy yarn, resulting in non-uniform fabrics of lower quality.
The invention is illustrated by the following example, which does not limit it in any way.
EXAMPLE.-
A 40 denier, 27 yarn zero twist Dacron polyester yarn was passed through a working yarn. Immediately before the throw, the yarn passes over a wetting device of the type frequently used to apply a gum or sizing to a moving yarn, which device applies a thin film of water to the yarn.
The speed of the wire to the jet is 100 yards (91.4 m) per minute The jet is a jet of air at a pressure of 40 pounds per square inch (2.81 kg / cm2) at a pressure gauge o The wire is then sent under a tension of 14 go The stability of the worked wire is 0.1%
As a control, the same yarn is passed through the working jet again without applying water to the yarn before working. The quality of the work and the processability of the yarn drop immediately, so that '' It is necessary to increase the air supply to the jet to a gauge pressure of 80 pounds / square inch (5.62 kg / cm2) to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
obtain an equivalent quality of the thread worked At this air pressure level, the tension of the thread is 15 to 18 go The thread has a stability of 0.2%,
which is practically the same as that of the example.
As shown by the example above, applying moisture to the wire immediately before work results in a better product, as well as a reduction in the amount of air required to achieve adequate work. a moistening device has been described as a method of applying moisture to a moving yarn, of course there are many other methods which can perform the same function, for example the use of a sizing roller or actual soaking of the wire in a suitable trough containing water, etc.
Water is the preferred material to use in perfecting the product and process. There are, however, many other materials which may also serve the same purposes with varying degrees, but usually less success, among which can be mentioned hydroxylated non-solvents such as ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol
EMI3.1
col and 2-ethylhexanediol-1.30
Depending on the material and the degree of work desired the air pressures of these various jets can vary from 20 to 80 pounds / square inch (1.41 to 5.62 kg / cm3) or more o However, one of the advantages of the present invention is that most yarns can be worked with a pressure of 20 to 40 pounds / square inch (1.41 to 2.82 kg / cm2)
only o These pressures are usually too low for operations performed by prior processes o Application of water prior to work usually improves the processing of any yarn at a given air pressure; in fact, some of the materials which do not seem likely to be worked by the process can be worked very easily when water is applied to the moving yarn. Here again, the use of water reduces the load. amount of air required while maintaining a given degree of quality and processability.
It is also possible to add various materials to the water to improve the efficiency of the process. Suitable additives are, for example, surfactants, lubricating materials for threads, finishes, gums, etc. .
The yarn working process, including the application of water to the yarn, can be carried out in combination with many of the normal textile operations, such as drawing, twisting, winding, cone winding, etoo A suitable time is after the yarn has exited the spinneret and the filaments have coagulated or sufficiently taken up. o The levels of the winding tensions may vary to any level necessary to achieve proper winding formation filo
The method of the present invention is applicable to zero-twist or spinning bearing yarn,
as well as twisted yarn After working the yarn the yarn can be fed directly onto a winding or winding driven by surface etching, or it can receive an additional twist and be fed by a ring twisting device. Changes in the degree of volume can be obtained by varying the air pressure, the winding tension, the degree of twist, the flow rate or the amount of supercharged yarn, and so on.
The bulky yarn of the present invention has the desirable properties of yarns spun using staple fibers without the need to cut the continuous filaments into staple fibers and then reconstitute the yarn using these staple fibers.
The bulky yarn is prepared in a simple and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
economical, directly from a bundle of continuous filaments and is superior to staple yarn in many cases. These yarns can be used for all textile applications. Another advantage is the possibility of using low air pressures and as long as this can be established, all types of continuous synthetic filament yarns can be worked. Hitherto certain polyester filaments could not be worked in a satisfactory manner.
